    "Should you use abandoned software?" lol If you've ever worked in an enterprise IT department you know how cute and naive that question is. The question is generally, "What's the new plan for migrating off of X software/hardware/infrastructure that we've been using for the past 10 years unsupported now that ${employee} is leaving/retiring?"

    Depends on the attack surface. Something like neofetch? Probably. Something like a web browser? Probably not. A Linux distro? Holy fuck absolutely the fuck not. Being unmantained means dependencies are going to break eventually.

    Let's put it this way: Using abandoned software generaly is not good idea but there are some rare examples where you can use if you want to even abandoned software. Neofetch is one of those. Neofetch poses no risk even if it isn't mainained anymore because neofetch only fetches data about system and shows it in terminal. Also neofetch isn't software, it is actualy bash script.

    It highly depends on the software itself. In example I played on Yuzu emulator (the original) months after it was shut down. There are also tools where no alternative exist, so why not using it if its not a security risk? Even more true if you can compile it yourself.
    But for a software like neofetch which requires updates to deliver all the information in an accurate way, well, I wouldn't use it if it was abandoned for long time.

    • @Skelterbane69
      @Skelterbane69 3 місяці тому +1

      I keep yuzu around mostly to preserve it, but I use ryujinx now
      and I gotta say it's even better in most aspects. So the change was actually welcome, for me.

    • @thingsiplay
      @thingsiplay 3 місяці тому

      @@Skelterbane69 I also keep Yuzu. The best change for me to Ryujinx is, that the addons (updates and DLCs) are not installed onto the Nand. That means I can keep them close to the hard drive where the Roms are located as well.
      Other than that, I can't say too much, because I was new to Yuzu when shortly after Nintendo started doing the strikes. I only played Breath of the Wild on it, mainly.

    Neofetch is already starting to break in newer systems and hardware. It sometimes displays PopOs as Ubuntu and may sometimes not display correct hardware in very recent cpu. It's probably just a bug, but It's not going to be fixed

    As long as Neofetch continues to work, I see no reason to really stop using it. I'll even manually install Neofetch if distros pull it from their repos. Its literally just a script that prints a compiled list of stats of your computer (the security risk seems almost nonexistent).

    I bought a new laptop and i decided to put fastfetch as an alternative. But what really bugs me is that is not reporting the same amount of RAM that's being used. I used neofetch for years to compare distros. So now i have both 😂 and cpufetch too.

    Generally something like neofetch will continue to work for some time after it's abandoned, but I make it a habit not to use software like that, it just saves me the headache of switching quickly when something eventually breaks. And it's not an "if", it's a "when".
    I am pretty happy with fastfetch.

    The Original maintainer did say someone else can pick up on it as a maintainer for it. Its open for business people, I can't develop myself, I'm more a PC hardware ideas and design, not a software maker.. What I would love to see is something that can make animation/video and with all system specs detailed and everything, could made into a video or animated GIF lol How to make that though, not my strong-point.

    This kind of depends on the amount and range of data sourced from the internets the particular piece of sw gets exposed to.

  • @SweDennis
    @SweDennis 3 місяці тому

    As usually, well put in general. My answer is simply ... as was yours ... it depends on What software it is, is it critical for what you do, are there alternatives? Some software products are also just simply Done. Generally people are just so update-trigger-happy, that they don't see the wood for the trees ... no updates?, No new "Features"? Crikey, I must find something new ... What many forget is that security comes at a cost, a lack of new features. Every new line of code in a maintained product is a potential security risk, but people update willy nilly anyhow, just because newer is better, right, giving no second thought to What is being updated or if it has an impact on your use case. It's a double edged sward, that maintained and updated thingy. If you don't care and just update, you're every bit in the risk as you are with unmaintained products. End of "rant" :-D It depends, but you already knew that ... 😀
