R.E.M. is known for its mysterious and cryptic lyrics and this one fits that view 100%. I love the drums being so up front - R.E.M.always stayed true to what they wanted to present.
During that 1982 tour REM would often close their shows with "Stumble" and then segue into an unreleased jam called "Skank". They recorded alot of those 1982 shows and they remain some of the best early live REM concerts out there.
Stumble/Skank are featured on a bootleg CD called Carnival of Sorts. It is 13 minutes long. They have what they call the 13 minute version, but it is not 13 minutes long.
The cover sculpture of "chronic town" is a gargoyle, on Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. If you climbed a narrow stair to the mid of the two towers (I did in 1992) at the the front of the cathedral, observation platform, this is one of the Gargoyle's one can see,...it's bored. This "EP' of a few songs, my brother shared with me in 1983. He was going off to college, a bit older than me. When R.E.M. came near our Ohio location, Spring of 1985, we got tickets (only $10) at a college theatre, for their third album tour "Reconstruction of the Fables". I saw R.E.M. four times 'live' before they started to get big, in 1987.
Hey Shawn, I'm so happy you love Stumble! What a great reaction. Where the middle of the song where Michael Stipe is speaking is a piece of music put on a loop. The band Pylon, which is mentioned regarding the APT, was another band from Athens, GA. They are currently known as Pylon Reenactment Society, and the lead singer is the only original member of Pylon left. I love both bands' music. SO here are the lyrics to Stumble: We'll stumble through the yard We'll stumble through the yard We'll stumble through the A-P-T We'll stumble through the yard Force fields. Explorer racing home, the ancient star. Yellow mixed with golden hue. Scan the graveyard, dead there be. Ball and chain. Ball and chain. Ball and chain. Ball and chain. It was round about midnight. Hipster town. Imagine going for a walk. Things get around to taking place. It's not a waste of time. The rich got a little poorer. Things get around to taking place. If they're gonna happen at all. Don't need that jazz. Don't need that stuff. It was round about midnight. Hipster town. It was round about midnight. Hipster town.
Oh wow a song from Chronic Town . I had that record! I bought it in a Tower Records the day after I saw REM perform on Letterman for the first time, ya know, about a hundred years ago. I probably bought Murmur that day too, their first full length album. To this day I like these the best of all of their records. Too cool to see someone enjoying it this century.
Awesome song and E.P. You might as well hear the whole thing, so great. I think it's somewhat better than Murmur because there's fewer songs, no "filler". I started listening to them around '85 with Fables Of The Reconstruction and started to collect all their music. Another cool thing they did was covers, of Velvet Underground, Aerosmith, Pylon, Television, Mission Of Burma, Troggs, they really educated me on rock history that way.
Wow! Deep, deep dive into early REM… Gardening at Night is one of my favorites- they played it at their Rock and Roll HOF induction. I think the best song to follow Stumble, though, should be We Walk.
Also must hear the band Guided By Voices! They have 40 albums and each one has a wiki page! Their influences include REM, the Who, Beatles, Wire, Devo, Incredible String Band, Big Star, Cheap Trick, Troggs, and all kinds of weird underground stuff too (like Cat Butt!)
I love early REM, and this would indeed be a good first song to fall in love with me. The whole EP is great. For me, "Can't Get There From Here" was how I discovered and fell in love with the band.

This part of their career was genius and Stumble is the masterpiece. After 1987 they were a joke.
The IRS years were certainly their most creative and artistic period.
Mitch Easter and Don Dixon were responsible for the incredible sound production on this EP.
MIichael - IIIIII, mumble through my songs. 😎🤣 Do not 🔥 me, just playin’ REM is ONE OF my favorite bands, I have EVERY album. ☑️👌😎 JP
