I traded out a Ford Focus ST (6 speed manual) for a Subaru Crosstrek with a CVT. It’s fine. The world didn’t end. No complaints. Love the matching sweaters, LOL.
A wonderful episode, as usual, but even better with the insights on how you do this and how much you like doing it. It certainly comes through for the viewer. We have a ‘24 BMW X5 50e (purchased in part because of your excellent review of it), as well as a ‘21 Porsche Panamera 4S e-hybrid, and love both PHEVs. Will likely go EV in a couple of years, and are most interested in the Macan 4, so would love to see a driving review of this by you (liked the walk around video). Thanks for doing all of these.

Same here. Currently own two VW products (Audi) and they have been awesome. Last Audi we traded in with over 100k miles and it ran like a clock. You definitely need to maintain them though
CVT’s are just fine for us two in our 2017 Camry hybrid after decades of stick driving , no issues ,especially for seniors who were starting to have issues on hills with a stick.
Appreciate the CVT talk. I have a Nissan Rogue (I know the horrid past of Nissan CVTs, the hate was deserved) but that was years ago. I chance the CVT fluid every 30k miles and have absolutely no issues
@@1_helper-PST I don't understand why. There lineup looks great, drives great and is priced-great. I'm on to my third nissan. I've owned honda and toyota before and prefer Nissan over both.
Zack advises a viewer to buy their Volvo at the end of the lease period because they've "already paid for half of it". This advice requires some qualification. Buying a car at the end of the lease period might make financial sense *if* the car's residual value is less than its market value.
FYI. I agree with Zack. Owned 4 Tacomas and traded up every 3 yrs and was very happy with trade in value. However, just traded 2022 Audi for an 2024 Atlas and was shocked at how much it deprecated!
I had a 2018 Tiguan and no problems. The only reason I don’t drive it anymore because I leased a 2021 Arteon and kept it on your recommendation on episode 68. I may change the Arteon because I love the way the new Tiguan looks. My nephew has a 2016 Jetta SE and again no problems. You both are really the best! Cheers From Tampa
I have the ILX with the 8 speed DCT with torque converter. I have 105K on it and it still runs beautifully. I would LOVE to have the ADX but i cant go back to a CVT (used to own a cvt too). Its sad to see that they never continued on this 8 DCT. Imagine if this first iteration was so good, an updated second iteration would have been even better.
I've always wondered if end of Feb is a good month to buy because less people spending due to taxes AND perhaps dealing with all the Christmas/Holidays spending... Plus, being a shorter month always make it tougher to make quota, yes I know their numbers go up against previous Febs, but still having less days to make up because they're behind may be an advantage to buyers (?) Just a thought
1. Zack says that the depreciation of EVs is 18% per year and that of gas models is 3% per year. The latter is a surprising figure to say the least. Can someone provide the link to the article that reports this figure? Other sources report that gasoline models depreciate on average 13% per year. (Of course the actual depreciation depends on the model and the car, especially its mileage.) 2. Incentives depress the prices of new and used cars. This is bad for you if you bought an EV without incentives and then incentives were introduced. If you bought with incentives and the incentives continue then you are fine. If you buy now with incentives then you stand to benefit in coming years as incentives are scaled back.

At one point I owned 5 VWs, and yes, the older ones ( 2002 Bettle, 2011 Jetta Sportwagen) had some problems: Notoriously bad AT in the Sportwagen, and strange electrical issues in the Bug. My 2012 GTI DSG needs more attention than, say a Corolla; but so fun to drive! My 2016 Golf Sportwagen has been near flawless as has the wife's 2017 Beetle, save for a minor recall on both. Buy the car on the last day of any month. Each dealer has a monthly quota to earn end of year discounts and credits. If they haven't met that quota yet there will be a deal.
Used to work at a dealership that cut off the month around the 28th of each month in order to reliably have payroll ready for the 1st. So torn on VW. We had a 2008 Jetta and loved it the first few years. Drove great. AC went out after a few years then at 10 years 135k miles-ish it started leaking oil and transmission started clunking 😢. It was a couple of accidents, so I wonder if that contributed to the issues but who knows. Recently rented a Tiguan and A3 both nice and zippy.
Chiming in...owned a VW CC - not buying another VW again. Ugh...mixed oil up with coolant, had random electric issues, went through tyres and even left us stranded in 40 degree weather (this was in the Middle East). Brand new car, dealer serviced and garage parked its entire life. Looked great, but was just awful to own. Switched to a Lexus (LS) and never looked back. Plus the Lexus was just so sublimely smooth & powerful!
Thank you as always! I'm looking at a 24 E class wagon now from Mercedes which has a higher sticker than I'd like, particularly knowing that the depreciation is significant. I can take it or leave it. Would you recommend waiting until January?
Mazda screwed up big time with the featureset on the U.S. CX-50 Hybrid. If they think demand for hybrids is lower in the U.S. than Canada, their market research is woefully wrong. Not sure what the rationale is for that one.
It’s called the art of the deal, tariffs are Trump‘s opening salvo. He’ll get what he wants and they’ll be no tariffs for Canada. Mexico, different story.
Could you get depreciation stats of those who paid huge markups on their ICE vehicles. I’m sure it’s going to be just as crazy as the EVs bought before the great price drop of Elon.
I'm the owner of a 2021 Tesla with only 18,000 miles, yet I'm facing the same delima with the poor resale value. I love the car but can only get half of what I paid for it and feel like I have to sell it before it drops further. I would apply the money towards a Toyota hybrid.
I really don’t think it’s fair that, to varying degrees of awful, modern manual transmissions get away with having rev-hang and nobody complains. Why? Do people not remember what it was like to take your foot off the gas pedal and have the actual gas stop going to the engine so you could up shift properly ?
I live in Illinois. There’s a used car dealer near me that specializes in late model used cars that were originally made and sold for the Canadian market. Two neighbors of mine bought their late model Chevy pickups from that dealership. They didn’t know if their vehicles had more features. But they probably have a better winter package.
I've needed a car for 3 yrs but I decided to drive my car into oblivion. So next yr is my buy time. I just couldn't get suckered into buying at MRSP and 8-9% lease/finance rates. And those wait times being quoted for EVs was just ridiculous. Now the EVs 1 or 2 yr old prices have dropped off a cliff. You had to know that was going to happen. I love it.
Thank you for providing us great info ,just have question about rav4 prime, does it work without 18 kw hour battery if I decide not to replace and just decide to run as regular gas only, will it start and run only on gas
Can you find out about the Rav4 hybrid cable issue still corroding because my wife as a 2021 RAV4 hybrid. Toyota said the 2021 was fixed but last evening I towed my friends 2021 Rav4 hybrid to the dealer for the corroded cable. I am in NL so we get salt on the road in the winter.
Here's a head-scratcher for ya. Turned in Korean car for a Japanese one with what they offered in trade and they (Toyota) put the Korean car (advertised) for sale for what they offered me. One in one out ! Not in tears for Toyota sales ...but ? Can't understand this one....
your answer to best time to buy a car didn't take into account the practice of companies releasing cars mid year and calling them next year's model - eg 2025 Toyota Camry has been out for a while so waiting till January doesn't seem to have much advantage until they say when the 26 model is coming and then the month or so before that they want to clear out the 25's would seem to be the optimal time to buy a 25...
The minimum depreciation for an electric vehicle is 20%. The quality of the battery has degraded such that once 5 years are up, it's just not worth having. So maybe 30% to 40% in the first year is more realistic. Ouch!
Thousands of verified owners respond to JD Power for their reliability surveys. IF you do the math, a Volvo is likely to have one more reliability issue than a Lexus (the reliability leader) in the third year of ownership. In fact it will have fewer reliability issues than a Volkswagen or Audi or Tesla. Or, you could go with the anecdotal story from the guy down the street.
I wonder if we will ever get deals in Vancouver that are anywhere near to the leases like Tommy at TFLCar got on a new Fiat 500E in Colorado... $700 down and $49.00 monthly...
VW TAOS UPDATE: I have now had my 2024 VW Taos Comfortline Black Edition for just over a month and am absolutely loving it! I have gotten used to the transmission and it is so fun to drive! I bought 19 inch winter tires and it handles amazing in the snow. Wow- I am very pleased.
You're right about "car people' whining about CVT. Oh JATCO this, JATCO that. Then again, these are the same people who argue about which comic book character could beat up which other comic book character. And they get HEATED about it.
The JATCO CVT was a huge issue for Nissan as we are all aware of but it's much improved now. For those who had a CVT with a ton of problems, I can understand why they wouldn't want another one. But a lot has changed today.
Zack: "Average depreciation of a current model gas car is 3% (per Automotive News)." Check your facts - there is no way that is correct. It's way higher.
If Mazda’s have more features in Canada spec’s vehicles, can an American purchase these Canadian spec vehicles by crossing over to Canada in the Northern US States like New York or Michigan?
If you are paying cash the dealer would probably be happy to sell it to you. But you'd have to go thru a bunch of custom and US import regulations. And your speedo would be in Km/hr. :)
Cx50 is missing parking sensors in Canada as well. Only on top 2 high trims. Unbelievable, such a usefull and cheap 25+ year old invention item is cut for cost savings
The CVT failed on my daughter's Honda just out of warranty. They say they will never buy another Honda. Some other family members have had good reliability on Hondas. "Your mileage may vary."
off the lot price drop - I have said that is wrong for years - it depends "where that depreciation is" right - if it is in my pocket I think it is not bad. If you take the car price includes a 1.9% rate - well you gave that to the dealer - or is if you pay for the brand - well you have to wait until you sell it to get that benefit (if the car is still around - ownership risk you took on). Heck I say, take the $5000 depreciation everyone else is waiting to get back and invest it in your retirement.
Good talk about CVTs. Both of our current vehicles have them and we like them. My Venza (Toyota Hybrid) and our Forester Wilderness have it (albeit, different designs). We like the smooth drives they offer and increased efficiency.
@@nickolastiguan yes, hence the "different design" comment. It is just a planetary gearset. It is actually the best system. Super simple and super reliable. Belt and chain systems aren't as reliable, but if you stay on top of your maintenance and don't abuse them, they can be relatively decent too.
Think the Toyota eCVT is the best out there. Most of the people that hate CVTs are those that have to work on them or pay for them to be fixed once broken. If they are not broke there is no issue with CVTs.
Zack… cars used to be about the drivetrain and it still is for me. These complicated technology centric vehicles with buzzy engines and transmissions are a joke. I don’t think you have to be a car nerd to understand what you are buying and how it will perform.
Love your engaging videos. Regarding CVT's, I recently replaced a 2017 CX-5 (6 speed auto) with a 2023 CRV 1.5 turbo and I really like the CVT with the small turbo. It is a good match for my "smooth" driving style and when I need to accelerate to merge with traffic, you can feel the turbo kick in. Instead of flooring it, I give it about 80% throttle and that provides ample acceleration.
So are you saying stay away from Hybrid, if you plan on keeping the vehicle for 10+ years, or potentially 20, due to the cost of a battery replacement down the road
@@Motormouth... Thank you. I didnt know there was a difference So plug in is you plug into power to charge it, other one the gas engine charges the battery
Hybrids have a much smaller battery so your costs will always be lower. For example a RAV4 hybrid has a 1.6 kWh battery whereas the RAV4 plug-in hybrid has a 18.1 kWh battery. Manufacturers have different price points for battery replacement costs which are difficult to find to be honest with you, costs aren't publicized. I am surprised by the cost of the Wrangler 4xe battery, it seems very high. As for pure electric vehicles, batteries range in size between 58 kWh to much higher, some are 200 kWh for a larger vehicle like a pick up truck. If cells within the battery can't be replaced, the cost to replace a battery will be much higher. As time goes on and batteries are recycled and cells can be replaced, the costs will come down.
@@andreaspencer9813 Awesome info, thank you. Will be looking way more into this as this car could be a last car purchase for retirement. So have time to do a ton of research, and make sure we make the right choice
@ I paid over $50k for it and the next year it was worth less than half. Sucked it up and put money down to get from under it. Just a bad financial decision. Plus I wanted the x4. 😉
Good information, buying older model when totally new one is coming out , is that you are buying the older technology, 5 to 7 years old technology. Current Audi A4 or A5 model were introduced in 2018, the new A5 coming has all new technology and new look. Is current A4 or A5 worth the discount ? Not for me!!! Luxury cars, update their cars after 6 to 7 year. Buying brans new car that has a 7 year old technology!!! Not worth it! Unless you buy used for a bargain!!!!
Must be something wrong with me. I love my ford escape e-cvt. It is ALWAYS in the RIGHT GEAR.Drone? I don’t hear a drone. I drive the car. The e-cvt does its thing.
@@DVinCanadaDepends wh7xh which market. USA and Canada are large countries with big rural areas, long drives and cold climate. All unfavorable to EVs at this time hence low adoption rates.
Not all places. 72% of car registrations in HK in the first nine months of 2024 were EVs. We expect to reach 90% in two years. Toyota is struggling in HK, especially the RAV4
Lease and dump the VW's and if it's good then buy out... The 2 I've had were absolute lemons and they were 3 and 5 years in on the drivetrain designs so the bugs should have been worked out on these. Never again. I'd rather pay for a boring Lexus and have it be reliable and still worth something upon resale if I choose to.
4:10 Hi Andrea and Zach! Not sure who or what is wrong, but on the Mazda USA website it’s showing a Hybrid Premium Plus with all the features minus a 360 camera. But I see it all on the website, vented seats, power folding mirrors etc
Wow, I just looked and they have added a lot of features. Consumers must have been complaining. You are right, no 360 camera and I also noticed no heated rear seats or front and rear parking sensors but this is definitely a start for our US buyers.

Here's a head-scratcher for ya. Turned in Korean car for a Japanese one with what they offered in trade and they (Toyota) put the Korean car (advertised) for sale for what they offered me. One in one out ! Not in tears for Toyota sales ...but ?
Can't understand this one....
Will the ADX come with a manual at some point? A-Spec maybe?
your answer to best time to buy a car didn't take into account the practice of companies releasing cars mid year and calling them next year's model - eg 2025 Toyota Camry has been out for a while so waiting till January doesn't seem to have much advantage until they say when the 26 model is coming and then the month or so before that they want to clear out the 25's would seem to be the optimal time to buy a 25...

CVT transmissions suck!! Yes I have driven several and thank God never HAD TO own one
The minimum depreciation for an electric vehicle is 20%. The quality of the battery has degraded such that once 5 years are up, it's just not worth having. So maybe 30% to 40% in the first year is more realistic. Ouch!
Yep, love the Volvo V60 too! Unfortunately, being a 1 car fam, I need a reliable vehicle.
Cheers
Thousands of verified owners respond to JD Power for their reliability surveys. IF you do the math, a Volvo is likely to have one more reliability issue than a Lexus (the reliability leader) in the third year of ownership. In fact it will have fewer reliability issues than a Volkswagen or Audi or Tesla.
Or, you could go with the anecdotal story from the guy down the street.
I had a Tacoma - was great vehicle. Not good on gas though.
I wonder if we will ever get deals in Vancouver that are anywhere near to the leases like Tommy at TFLCar got on a new Fiat 500E in Colorado... $700 down and $49.00 monthly...
VW TAOS UPDATE:
I have now had my 2024 VW Taos Comfortline Black Edition for just over a month and am absolutely loving it! I have gotten used to the transmission and it is so fun to drive! I bought 19 inch winter tires and it handles amazing in the snow. Wow- I am very pleased.
Methinks Mazda's hybrid powertrain will be a Mazda engine with Toyota electrics.
Isn’t the CX50 built under the same roof as the Corolla Cross in the Alabama?
My favorite Road Warriors! I need passport advice, pronto!
Love your channel, just subbed. 💕
Thank you so much, welcome aboard!
Next ride and drive Party at Andrea and Zach's house. Who's with me?
You're right about "car people' whining about CVT. Oh JATCO this, JATCO that. Then again, these are the same people who argue about which comic book character could beat up which other comic book character. And they get HEATED about it.
The JATCO CVT was a huge issue for Nissan as we are all aware of but it's much improved now. For those who had a CVT with a ton of problems, I can understand why they wouldn't want another one. But a lot has changed today.
Zack: "Average depreciation of a current model gas car is 3% (per Automotive News)." Check your facts - there is no way that is correct. It's way higher.
Rule of thumb: value first through fifth year, % of new cost . . . 60, 50, 40, 35, 30.
Only cvt ,ore general public cares about is if it’s a Nissan cvt 😳
If Mazda’s have more features in Canada spec’s vehicles, can an American purchase these Canadian spec vehicles by crossing over to Canada in the Northern US States like New York or Michigan?
If you are paying cash the dealer would probably be happy to sell it to you. But you'd have to go thru a bunch of custom and US import regulations. And your speedo would be in Km/hr. :)
Like a Quentin Tarantino movie, I thought I was watching a Sentra review then “boom” it’s a Kicks!
Raiti’s Dust TIL Dawn tribute. 😂
Your Venza hybrid has a eCVT, mechanically completely different from a CVT; but you may know that already.
@@nickolastiguan yes, hence the "different design" comment. It is just a planetary gearset. It is actually the best system. Super simple and super reliable. Belt and chain systems aren't as reliable, but if you stay on top of your maintenance and don't abuse them, they can be relatively decent too.
I try non eCVT from Honda before it is bad. And end up got Mazda. I agree that DCT should be used for brand like Acura.
For your Christmas episode will you both wear Christmas tree sweaters with car ornaments as decorations???
Think the Toyota eCVT is the best out there. Most of the people that hate CVTs are those that have to work on them or pay for them to be fixed once broken. If they are not broke there is no issue with CVTs.
Other than taking all the pleasure of driving away, you're right..no issues with them
Zack… cars used to be about the drivetrain and it still is for me. These complicated technology centric vehicles with buzzy engines and transmissions are a joke. I don’t think you have to be a car nerd to understand what you are buying and how it will perform.
We are all about the performance of the cars, but you're right, technology is adding to the complexity.
@@Motormouth...which is adding dramatically to repair costs .
A RAV4 at a big discount?? Funny guy! 😂
Hybrids are good for long-term use, the story was about a plug-in hybrid. Different technology.
@@virgil3241 Yes, it's always good to take your time especially if it's your last purchase and you want to keep it long term.
The Mazda cx 50 hybrid is made in Alabama, Not Japan.
Oh, that's right. Forgot that
I traded in a BMW X3 for a Mustang EV. It tanked. I traded it in and bought another ICE BMW. You couldn’t pay me to buy another EV.
Tell us what happened to it please.
Volvo V60 💯
Not to mention V90, the ultimate long roof.
prices will crash soon very bad time to buy now
It's been a bad time to buy for the last four years.
don't buy
Looking tasty in those jeans Andrea!
EV's are disposable vehicles at this time. Toyota studied the market and they claim EV's can only penetrate 25% of the car market.
And was Toyota sooo wrong with their claims. Look at China, Southeast Asia, Swedan and Norway.
@@DVinCanadaDepends wh7xh which market. USA and Canada are large countries with big rural areas, long drives and cold climate. All unfavorable to EVs at this time hence low adoption rates.
@@DVinCanadawhat % of the car marketing are those countries. The CEO of Ford tried to road-trip in an F150 and it was a disaster… no thanks
Not all places. 72% of car registrations in HK in the first nine months of 2024 were EVs. We expect to reach 90% in two years. Toyota is struggling in HK, especially the RAV4
@@2driverpls652 excuse me, are you asking about China? The world’s largest auto market?
À luxury brand as Acura deserve a better transmission than a basic Honda CVT transmission. Why not using the 10 speed AT ?
Lease and dump the VW's and if it's good then buy out... The 2 I've had were absolute lemons and they were 3 and 5 years in on the drivetrain designs so the bugs should have been worked out on these. Never again. I'd rather pay for a boring Lexus and have it be reliable and still worth something upon resale if I choose to.
The Best Time to buy a new Vehicle - when you can afford it :-)
Buy for cash...that which you can afford. You won't regret it.
Cash is king
4:10 Hi Andrea and Zach! Not sure who or what is wrong, but on the Mazda USA website it’s showing a Hybrid Premium Plus with all the features minus a 360 camera. But I see it all on the website, vented seats, power folding mirrors etc
Wow, I just looked and they have added a lot of features. Consumers must have been complaining. You are right, no 360 camera and I also noticed no heated rear seats or front and rear parking sensors but this is definitely a start for our US buyers.
@ just want to say love the channel! I asked a question around episode 93 I believe. I went with an Audi A4 and I love it! Thanks for the advice and the content!
@mvlaste Thank you so much, really happy you are loving your A4 👌
Haven't read anything good about Volvo reliability. Its a vehicle you lease for 3 years and dump .
If yous guys are the fonz and pinky that means I'm Ralph Malph . I don't even get a leather jacket.
come on guys..time to quit the 2 pronunciations of Mazda!! Been watching you guys for ever
