Thank you for posting the video. My issue is, do I need to change to a static IP address when promoting a server to domain controller? Will there be any issues if I utilize the IP assigned by DHCP server?
Hi Lucas, thanks for watching my video. A domain controller should not receive his IP address from DHCP server, DHCP is meant for client devices and servers join to domain controller. When using a DHCP server, you should create a reservation on your DHCP and assign one of the reserved IP address to your domain controller as static IP address. You can as well assign reserved IP address as static to servers to avoid conflict or change of IP address.
It seems like I promoted a server without knowing I did. I thought once a server was part of the domain controller I then needed to “promote it to be the main”. From watching this video it seems like promoting a server dc to be the main is not a thing. Once join to the domain controller, do all my servers have the same level of privilege/leadership? My goal was to decommission my old server (the first server) and promote the last server I added but it seems I have “promoted it” already if your video is what promoting means.
Will this promotion work if there is already a DNS server in place? Also, if I have an existing DNS server, and would like to make a new one the primary DNS server, what needs to be done with the pre-existing DNS server, if anything?
