I am old enough to remember the good old days where there were security personnel who checked your baggage claim ticket before allowing you to leave. I am surprised that this type of theft doesn’t happen more often.
I remember having to show my baggage claim and was surprised when it stopped happening. I am not surprised that thieves have finally figured this out as well.
They need to restart that policy in all major US cities where theft is frequently reported on the news lately. Voters can write to our local airports, city mayors, and state governors.
I'm honestly surprised this doesn't happen more often. These baggage claims are completely open, and it's incredibly easy to snatch someone's suitcase without getting caught. There are massive crowds, so you can blend in quite easily. Every suitcase needs to have an AirTag, and luggage theft should be upgraded to a high-level felony to deter thieves. Sting operations might also be useful.
shhh... it will bc it is the US where the biggest GDP results in millionaires bcoming Billionaires and they give some to their friends and family so it seems like there are more of them. GDP should reflect how safe a country is and how happy the ppl are but there has never been a Leader to speak this truth to ppl.
Very isolated case. As only 2 other passengers reported their bags missing that same day from that same flight. It'll never happen again......... I pinky swear.
Seth Rogen will tell you that it is no big deal. Just regular city living. Have your personal assistant deal with the insurance company or go out and buy all new stuff. Problem solved!
The Problem with San Jose Airport and other Airports is that there is NO Security at baggage claim. There is no system to check the passenger ticket against the luggage tag. It's very easy for someone to just pick up a bag and leave. It's so crowded that it is hard to keep track.
How about design the building so only people exiting the aircraft can get to the baggage claim area? Why should just anyone be able to walk in off the streets to reach this area?
When you flying into LaGuardia, they won't you leave the baggage area with a bag unless you present your bag check. The numbers on the bag check must match the numbers on the bag you're trying to take out. They use to do this at ATL but the staff there said they stopped because of "funding issues." If this gets to be a frequent problem, I wouldn't be surprised if SJC started implementing this. Also, I immediately head to the baggage carousel after landing before the belts even start. Can't take any chances.
you know in some countries like Switzerland, this isn't an issue. It's the bc GDP is use to enrich the already rich in America instead of making it a safer environment and one that results in better happier ppl.
@@richardg1426 Too many points of entry to a baggage claim terminal, they're usually near the pick-up area of airports so that's a whole lot of doors, plus in larger airports like SJC you have essentially one continuous room that stretches the entirety of the building, not to mention the number of places from inside the airport that let you get to baggage claim. For a smaller airport that doesn't get many flights it may be practical to set up secure location but for a larger airport that has planes landing quite literally every 30 seconds there's simply no practical way to secure it (without costing a LOT of money redesigning the airport). For international flights it is done out of necessity because your luggage gets searched by customs, if there was no customs searching your bags there'd be no need to have that closed to the public either.
Baggage carousels were one of the last bastions of the honor system in our society. Eventually I guess we’ll have to wait in line at counters to get baggage. Sad.
every day I find it harder and harder to have sympathy for the homeless. It seems more and more of them want to live by their rules, not the rules of a civilized society
One time for a cruise trip we landed in San Francisco airport late at night, we were delayed so we decided to spend the few hours till morning at the airport. I noticed a few homeless ppl in there sleeping in the food court area, one is pulling a small luggage talking to herself clearly has mental issues, others lay sleeping on benches. Security is lax at best, no wonder theft happens. My tip is as soon as landed, go to baggage area right away even before they unload the plane.
To be honest, I rather have security walking around baggage claim and check the bags belong to that person before they let them leave. I know that would suck, but it’s better to have your bags safe and not stolen.
when you deplane get your rear right to baggage claim and keep your head on a swivel. Don't dally calling anyone or renting a car. Your bag is vulnerable so protect it if you want to keep it.
Back in the 80's and 90s, London's Thiefrow Airport held the world record for 'missing' luggage. Some gangs of thieves hired vans so they could carry off more loot. They had hollow, bottomless, fake suitcases with barb-like clips inside that caught the case as it was covered and collected in a couple of seconds.
I was at SFO last year wondering how long it would be till these animals started stealing straight from the carrousel. Not surprised it’s going to start happening, but surprised it took these knuckle heads this long to figure it out.
I've always wondered why baggage claim don't make passengers swipe or show ID before being given their baggage🙄 ..... Surprised this hasn't happened more frequently over the years! 🇬🇧
I was wondering how some of these homeless were getting suitcases …also, get your butt down to baggage claim and get your bag, don’t stop for a beer first.
Sometimes it's an honest mistake. Coming from a cross Atlantic 12 hour flight to EWR, another passenger took my suitcase and left his. They were identical (Delsey Costco special edition). I reported that to the airline staff and gave them the other passenger's suitcase case. They contacted him, he was already gone. Two days later, the airline fedexed my suitcase to my home address. ITS VERY STRANGE THAT YOU CAN GRAB AND GO LUGGAGE WITH NO ONE CHECKING!
Don't think there has ever been a time that I took so much time deboarding a plane that I didn't get to the baggage claim area before it even started running. Get there before the thieves have a chance to snatch your luggage, your luggage doesn't get snagged. Although they could easily fix this by simply having someone check baggage tags before allowing them to leave.
It never really occurred to me could be possible, until I thought about it and realized that most baggage claim areas are within the non-sterile zone (the non-controlled part that the public can access, and is not restricted to only those who have passed customs and security). So stupid…..
The only way to solve this is to have the Arrival and Departure area have a security barricade whereas when you're at the arrival area once you exit you cannot enter again same goes for departure area as well. I worked for an airline where it's not really the airline's fault. it's the airport itself that needs to implement this kind of change for security and it can be done but of course it will require more workers and more $$$ for some upgrades.
Someone almost stole mine at Maui airport few years ago. I taped mine with yellow safety tapes. It was very visible and distinctive. But the thief still took it and left it behind him and waited to take more. I walked up and showed him the name tag on luggage was my name. He didn’t say anything.
In many airports across the world, you can enter airport only if you have a ticket or boarding pass for that day and ID proof. they have few security personal to manage it.
The international side of Atlanta airport only passengers exiting planes access baggage claim & there’s customs police who can randomly ask you to open the suitcase .In Kenya🇰🇪 unless you are a ticketed passenger you don’t enter the airport building. They can stop this…
Call the police and then what? Can you prove to them that what was stolen had value greater than $950? Otherwise they won't even bother with the misdemeanor!
At JFK, the baggage area was guarded. These airports act like theft is something new. They will do something when air travel drops due to crime. This is greed and the airline who took your bag should be 100% liable for the safety of your luggage. The economy is based in large part in trust. That is gone these days
hello nbc, sjo airport or oak airport all have arrivals for domestic flights where taxis are downstairs waiting for you. the tag used from airline - lets you fill out your next address - is that or was that always safe for airline workers to track for you your lost luggage. the round tag there is not regular - but the tag with address - airline workers know it is for you. elle for check-in with flt desk
If I AM the mayor, i would sue the airlines, airport, the conveyor maker, maybe the uber drivers too in the airport. Its all their fault. Just like CHICAGO MAYOR suing Kia and Hyundai for making their cars easy to steal. I might as well suggest sue the flyers from going here in SF, SJ airport.
If a thief can dress up to pass as a airline passenger, the thief could certainly dress up for a job interview and show up to work. Or the security guards weren't doing their jobs. I will give security the benefit of the doubt and say the thieves were clever hobos that deceived everyone that witnessed them walk out of baggage claim with multiple pieces of luggage.
The camp on that streets bad. My cuzn used to live on that street. For years it was a dead end. The homeless stay there because of the recycle place on the corner. It's also a really bad area.
Wait - there a thieves in CA? But aren't the police brutal on crime there? When minutes count the police can be depended on to arrive within hours or days.
So you hope they increase security at the baggage claim carousel? Do you think that's free? Don't you know who's going to pay for increase security? Why don't you change the way you vote next election, that will make a much bigger difference for society as a whole,
Some homeless dude need clothes to wear. Lots and lots of homeless in the bay area because people are struggling financially with the very high cost of living.

This became an issue in the NY airports in the 1970's.
It was resolved when New Yorkers finally voted in a Republican mayor.
Rudy Giuliani.

When most airports were designed people weren't such scum, and it wasn't an issue.

How about voting for the right people stop the crime everywhere, not just the airport. Vote Republican
Just make. Baggage claim a part of the terminal so people from the outside cannot enter

Try to land at EWR (New Jersey Liberty) it's chaotic, just grab and go, and that's international.
