- But we're all a little bit autistic, right?
This video explains all the reasons why I and every autistic person strongly disagrees with this statement - and why I think people need to stop saying it.
Please share this with anyone you feel would benefit from watching this, and let me know in the comments of this video what autistic traits or topics in general you'd like me to talk about next!

I think their intention behind saying "We're all a little autistic" is to imply they see us as equals and that they don't percieve the autistic experience as lessor. But they aren't realizing how this phrase reveals their deeply internalized ableism and how they percieve people with certain disabilities like autism as weak-willed. We are not weak or spoiled. We are disabled. The way we interact with the world and with our bodies is different.
EDIT: i do actually know someone who says this phrase and was diagnosed with aspergers as a child. Hid it from his children for 25 years until his oldest began to suspect they had autism. I think people like him grew up in undiagnosed autistic homes and have not yet realized that his home life was not "normal."
Completely agree. I would even use somewhat stronger words: It is often rooted in a (well-meaning, but completely ignorant, invalidating, and ultimately harmful) attempt to help autistic people integrate with the rest of society by artificially minimising the differences and trying to paste over the difficult topics.
We don't need people to half-heartedly accept us because we tend to be "a bit introverted", and that's ok because others in society are also "a bit introverted" at times. We need people who will accept us the way we are as autistic people in the full spectrum in which we manifest, both the easily tolerated aspects as well as the more challenging ones.
Well...no. That's like saying everybody is weird, but when you look at certain people, there is "weird-weird." Apparently we with ASD are "weird-weird" while aIIistics are normal.
Yes
@@truthonly313 But how? Scientifically, what makes us a word thats subjective?
@@johnrainsman6650 i guess the intensity.but i am autistic myself.
Thanks for the ramble. Liked how you put things into words.
In a way I don’t mind people saying everyone is a bit Autistic if they understand they are not Autistic. That is, if they think traits can be had by others but not the same degree of and quantity of. Which is why someone even with similar traits can be not on the spectrum. But I wonder how many people would understand this who say everyone is a bit Autistic. But then I have Proprioception issues and do non Autistic people have this. Even now I am not sure I am explaining fully.
Yes, abnormal amount and intensity is a good phrase. Significant impairment, yes!
Hey holly,i hope you are doing great.thanks for the video.i found out quite recently that i am on the spectrum aswell so this content is helpful.i saw your about and you mentioned a song about autism.can you link it cause i can't find it.thank you :-)

I’m glad it’s been helpful! 🥰
Whenever I hear someone say, "We're all a little bit autistic" it makes me cringe. Because, most of the time, it is from someone who had self-diagnosed and had never seen a Doctor. I don't understand people like that... Anyway! Another great vid! I truly feel like I am learning from your series. Thanks so much for that!
Thanks so much! Self diagnosis in my opinion is so valid but when people say this phrase just because they like to eat the same food a lot or because they don’t like loud music doesn’t necessarily mean they are autistic! And people don’t understand how damaging it can be to say things they don’t know enough about like we’re all a little bit autistic when in reality it’s not true.
As far as I've seen. People that have self diagnosed (as I had before getting my official diagnosis) had done some intense and thorough research and self reflection before coming to their conclusions that they are probably Autistic.
17:00 it is traits intensity spectrum ,, in my opinion
Autism spectrum is by default having a certain intensity and then you are on the autism spectrum
@@truthonly313 maybe i wrote it in incomprehensible way. I wanted to say that there is a "set" of ASD traits , and each trait has its intensity that is different in every person.
@@tomasvoldrich yeah i would agree
Tried to think about what else you could do a good ramble on as you requested for ideas. There is lots of stuff. Not sure?
High and low functioning?
Mmmm! Do whatever you feel you want to do maybe.
That’s a great idea thanks!
Yes please
1:16 I would add that it is a brain prediction disorder coupled with sensory issues, communication style differences, "play-pause style" of friendships, almost no interoception and intuition/gut feeling + struggle to recognize emotion in words - alexithymia, therefore slower information processing and recalling, ... etc it would be a long comment when i would list everything interesting 🥲
I belief It is lacking brain development in certain areas which cause long list of issues sadly
@@truthonly313 yes, thats true. I think that there are some brain areas that stops developing sooner than usual and the rest is normal developed. Also synaptic pruning will not happen fully. But to my brain prediction point: it is about not predicting when to use/save body energy, not predicting what could happen and therefore making person anxious, needing stereotype to learn as a result etc , problem integrating sensory systems into cohesive whole or impaired statistical learning...
