No Skimmer, No Sump, No Water Change Reef Tank

This is a short montage of my reef tank, which as the title says does not have a skimmer, sump, or has water changes done on it. The only filtration on this is an aquaclear 70 with some prefilter and the live rock within the tank. The reason this tank has been successful like this is because of the low bio load and the healthy LPS/soft corals in the tank.

Beautiful! Your GSP looks amazing! How old was your tank when you stopped doing water changes?

Thank you! Great question! Once my tank was around a year old I stopped doing water changes since I figured that the fast growth of the gsp might help keep the water clean. And after some water testing it looks like all my parameters are great, phosphates below .02 and nitrates below 1, I was actually very surprised at how good the water quality was.

Beautiful. How often do you feed you fish? Do feed your corals.

I feed them every other day a few pellets, and sometimes some frozen mysis or brine shrimp. The tank also has a little population of mysis so I assume they must also eat some of them. I usually don't feed the corals, unless I'm feeding frozen foods in which I'll target feed the corals and let the fish eat whatever floats away from the corals.

Sorry for the late response, I have an HOB with just filter floss, I think it could work if you design the tank right, for example having very small amount of fish (low bioload) and combining the sps with some fast growing soft corals like GSP or xenia, and obviously continue dosing to compensate for the lack of water changes.

Mostly live rock, but I used texas holy rock for some pieces as it looks similar and is cheaper.
