What a pleasant surprise to find your channel as I was looking for backhand slice tutorials for my daughter. You were my daughter Sophie’s first ever coach in Atlanta about 8 years ago…she stopped playing for a few years but picked the racket up again last year and just made her high school team. I subscribed to your channel and look forward to watching your videos.
Oh that is awesome! Small tennis world!
Being a player who developed my game way back in the 1970’s I learned to hit a slice or under spin backhand. The first professional tournament that I attended I got to watch Rod Laver play Ken Rosewall. I realize that the slice has evolved since then but Rosewall’s Backhand was considered the best in the game during his career. When you master the skills to hit ban effective slice you have options and more tools to use. A well hit slice has a low bounce that can be challenging for a opponent to hit. It’s an effective shot for an approach or as a neutral shot in an extended rally. I played a lot on clay and learned to mix up spin to keep my opponent off. You can hit drop shots off of your slice so it adds disguise. Because I use one hand I can also drive or hit top spin with a similar preparation of I want to mix it up.
The slice is such a versatile weapon. Such a shame that it's so under-taught
Exactly. I also saw Rosewall and Laver play live. Ken's opponents would try to avoid his backhand, to a large extent.
Amazing content, thank you! This is the best information on tennis strokes on UA-cam by far!
Thank you so much! Please recommend my channel to your tennis friends
Very useful..! Nice way of explanation! And demonstrations!
Great video!
Please do a part #2 on the defensive slice where you are forced to stretch wide and hit medium to high on the backhand side. That's the kind of shot that will help oneself getting out of tricky situations without burning out the legs. Another progression of that is the squash type slice forehand on the other wing.
Perhaps mix in some slow motion versions of your demo swings. Speaking for myself, I'm not fast enough to catch all the details in real time.
I totally spaced on answering here! I apologize. Those are great suggestions!!! I’ll put them in the video queue!
It's amazing that Graf could hit passes w/ slices especially in doubles. I can get some points by dinking it and keeping it off-pace but when I'm hitting off their approach it's tough to get pace and keep it in/away from people. Thanks for the video. I like the different camera angles especially when we can see the crazy effect on the ball.
Yes, those passes hurt. You think "oh it's just a slice" and then the thing just zipped by.
Beautiful slice Meike probably one of your best shot. Roger Federer slice is my favorite. A shot that is very effective in defense and in offense, makes some player go crazy 😂
Especially younger players bc nobody really teaches it a whole lot
@@MeikeBabelTennis Yeah that's quiet surprising because it is such a great shot, forehand slice too. Ons Jabeur has a great slice both shots, and that's why she plays amazing on grass.
People look down on the backhand slice especially, telling it is not a real backhand...but it can be a deadly weapon, like yours !
Fantastic. You do the best fundamentals videos that I've found - love your work! Thanks, Andy, Brisbane.
This video is the best overall SLICE Backhand instruction anywhere on social media. Well done. Since Steffi Graf dominated the best players in the world, ( 73-3 in 1983 )and she almost never hit topspin on the backhand side... Could you explain how she produced that shot ? ...With one video dedicated to that shot. Her lower takeback / and level skidding low slice style is being lost to history. THANKS
Both Barty and Graf had backhand slice in their toolbox, and they rose to the top of the WTA tour.
Thanks Meike. Super effective shot. I've always have had a backhand slice as a single handed backhand player but since I started using the Head Gravity Pro am hitting even more effective slices. This may not be a factor for all players but the weight, stability, swingweight and comfort has improved my backhand defense and enabled deeper, more offensive shots on returns and approach shots. Do need to get it back sooner. ;-) Have appreciated several of your insights. Play doubles 90% of the time. Wish you continued success.
Wonderful lesson thank you! 🙏
Super helpful video, this is soooo valuable. I love your approach. I noticed instant results, looking forward to continuing to develop this stroke.
That is awesome! Feel free to subscribe and recommend my channel to your tennis friends :-)
Thank you so much, Meike!
My pleasure!
Great lesson. Will put to good use 👍. Thanks, Meike!
My pleasure! Let me know how it went!
Meike, excellent video, thank you so much! Viele Grüße aus Bonn!
Hi Meike! One of the best backhand slice lessons on UA-cam. It is a pleasure to watch you and to listen to you, you are a great pedagogue.
Do you play with MP version of Head Gravity?
Thank you again and keep up a good work. You deserve 100x more views and subscribers. Very high quality content and approach. I've seen and watched a lot and I know what I am saying. :)
Thank you so much! I've only started my channel last spring so I hope the followers and views will still come :-) I've actually switched to Yonex since this video but I had the light version (better for teaching)
THAT is such a gorgeous shot. If I ever master that, watch out buddies!!
Please do an analysis of the Dan Evans slice
Let me see if I find footage where I don't violate copy rights
Discovered your channel in the past two weeks. I really enjoy your longer lesson approach and the vocabulary you invent (bitier)😀. It seems to me watching your stroke that you do (somewhat similar to current pros) come across the ball right to left, I guess because your upper body rotates about 45 degrees as you take your stroke. That seems correct to me. Something not mentioned but one can see it in slow motion video (e.g. ua-cam.com/video/df8uGh58sVk/v-deo.html) as the racquet comes forward it CLOSES a bit before contact and then opens up a bit after contact. I think this closing gives the ball more bite and pace. I look forward to watching more of your videos. I will search for your drop shot videos. I notice the pros seem to hit their drop shots with more height and their balls often bounce 3 times before the service line. Trying to switch from lower drop shots that land in the net too often particularly when hit from just inside the baseline. And yet higher drop shots seem to have too much air time. Gotta work on my disguise. Keep up the great work!
Thank you and welcome on board. Yes on the slice the racket face closes just before contact as you say. Which is why newer players have such a hard time making it sticky and bitey :-)
Hello. I wondered if you could post a video on the hand position used by professional players...not the grip placements ie bevel 1, 2 etc..but the placement of the hand in relation to the handle on forehand and backhand sides ..straight across, angled?
Many thanks
Jon
Hi Meike, when would it be appropriate to finish the slice from high to low as some of the pros on the ATP tour do, ie. Thiem and Federer? Thanks for the great videos as always.
If you can control that, yes. Ash Barty has a very steep swing as well but they're all incredible athletes with fantastic timing.
Wow, MEIKE ❤️ the first timei watched this video I missed the part when you said that you played Steffi Graf, two times, So cool 👍🏻🎾❤️
Well, I got my butt kicked twice :-)
@@MeikeBabelTennis well , she was the number 1 ,so I will not feel bad about it , I'm sure some positives came from those two matches 😘❤️👍🏻🎾
@@cesarfernandezlopez5063 Well Meike definitely got to see the advantages of a great slice backhand 😁
@Meike
Can you video on tennis serve toss arc
Excellent
Thanks !!!!
Great video! For backhand chipping to gain power, it is necessary to push forward.
Absolutely!
Really helpful Meike. Thank you! By the way, curious what string were you using in the video?
Thanks Meike. Is there any movement from your wrist after you prepare the racquet for the slice? Is it still in that same position at the end of the follow through?
Interesting footwork in the last minute of the video! Are you taking that crossing step with your left foot to stay sideways?
Yes, the carioca step helps with staying side ways.
@@MeikeBabelTennis Staying sideways...the bane of my one-handed-backhand existence!
many thanks. very clear and very useful. I'm not sure to be able to do it this way, but I will try :-)
It takes a while but I'm sure you can do it!
Thanks Mieke for the lesson. My problem is whenever I attempt either my frame hits the ball first or my ball just sits in the air. At what angle should the racquet face meet the ball to get a deep and biting shot.
You’re racket is only tilted ever so slightly. It’s actually almost neutral at the actual contact point. So try squaring it up more and more to avoid the frame and the floater
@@MeikeBabelTennis Thanks a lot 🙏
Been waiting for this and it’s worth the wait. Am I right that at the contact, the racket face is only slightly open? And how about when the ball is high, is it still a good option to slice it back?
Yes, the racket face at contact is almost neutral. And yes, I like my slice for higher balls because I can carve them off. But you can't let them come above your shoulder.
@@MeikeBabelTennis thanks 🙏👍
It’s horizontal to 15 degrees on contact
Caroline Garcia has also a good sliced backhand. But she never uses it . Could you please get in touch with her ?
What about slicing on a high ball? I find lower bouncing balls much easier to slice without floating. High balls, on the other hand, often float or go long.
You really have to have a great contact point out in front and still not above shoulder to control a high ball. Especially really heavy (lots of topspin) balls are hard to control with a slice.
I really like your channel but wait 13:00 didn’t federer hit 5000 rpm backspin? Does ash hit more than that?
Pleeeese cover the pen stance slice ...it's a key defensive weapon
I'm not sure if I've heard of the pen stance before. Can you elaborate?
@@MeikeBabelTennis sorry meant open stance backhand slice
The link is about the slice.
you look and sound similar to stefan edberg🙂
We're both European and English is our second language. Maybe that's why.
MEIKE, my next time on the court I gonna fly like an aeroplane ✈️👍🏻❤️
Silly isn't' it? The stuff that sticks with you. I learned this 40 years ago and I still use it.
@@MeikeBabelTennis i think is sweet, I'm sure your father is happy to see that you didn't forget😉
Thanks going across is not a good slice goijg forward and up is perfect
As a rule of thumb yes.
@@MeikeBabelTennis thanks my slice backhand has been so effective that I developed a habit of using it little too much compared to drive and now playing doubles is becoming a problem as my muscle memory is into using 70% slice and 30% drive
