3x the amount of US soldiers that were killed in Iraq have suicided since returning, so far. The real damage bill goes on for decades. And that's just the vets that committed suicide. As you say, how many suffer PTSD, along with a raft of co-morbities, like addiction and are still dwindling and debilitated all these years later? It's such a tragedy. Especially that the US runs a campaign of white supremacy and class war by offering folks from marginal and poor backgrounds, disproportionately black and POC, a pathway out of poverty through training and academia, if they serve in the army & go to war. And how many of these folks really know what they are getting themselves into? They're likely young and probably have a head full of steam about war, glory and patriotism. The US culture is a supremacist and militarised culture- meaning that they are brainwashed from Day 1, just like the Israelis, on militarism and supremacy and just how great and grand and righteous is the USA. Hollywood, the media and video games etc... provide never ending C.I.A certified, propagandised narratives and tropes, for war, and service to be normalised. And from where I sit and the country I come from, it stands out for me listening to them constantly feed their people this notion of 'having enemies', just so everyone gets a dose of 'borderline personality disorder' psychosis. Army recruiters take advantage of folks vulnerabilities and their youthful folly.
