C-15 550 Cat turbo whistle with the windows up

- Here is the Turbo whistle pulling a yacht with my work truck 67 mph, I-90 heading towards Seattle, 2002 T800 Kenworth with a 550 C-15 Cat. This is with the windows rolled up!!!!!! Mind you, I'm only about 65k with truck, trailer and yacht, can you imagine 190k with an excavator or dozer on!!!! OUCH!!!!
Grew up listening to the whistling of my dad’s ‘70 Pete w/1693 CAT. What a sound! Miss those days and my dad!

you can hear the fuel being shoveled in that engine, 5 stars!

Them cats sound really good I run a peterbilt 359 with a 3408 v8 cat and a 13 speed and man does it attract attention

well... That's the normal sound of a Caterpillar C-15. They have a name for thier loud and beloved turbo!
Hear I am, a recently retired truck driver for over 40 years missing my career and just enjoying the sounds of a Diesel engine. Time flys and I sure do miss it.
Definitely sounds like compounds you can hear smaller turbo lighting before big one lights

I just had my C15 fully rebuilt with the platinum overhaul. Sounds like a different truck now. On another truck I was getting a sound like that. Found I had a leak in the charge air cooler.
That is beacause this is a TRUCK not a Mercedes.
Jesus man I would be looking around to see if there is a plane nearby cause uh those skies better be clear for me to be ready to take off. The sky ain’t the limit I want to be at if it starts storming when my turbo is maxed out

Mine runs 1500 RPM @ 60 MPH with 4:10 gear ratio and 22.5 tires.
It's a quad axle dump truck.

cat turbo's are so different to holset or garret turbo's which make excessive whistle noise even at idle , where as cat turbo makes noise only when its working under load but they love loads bigger the load the harder she screams
@Biker Rat yea i have read about them being trouble and the c7 too, i got the trusty 3406 with out electrics, more reliable
@Biker Rat was this your own experience, have heard that cat sent engines to china for reco , and that does call for concern , but yea i would not go from 3406 to c15 , early motor was much more reliable , well mine is ,, never miss a beat and economical compared to newer c 15 , and longer life span

Pulled a 374 cat in a 3406 KOTH 625. Sounded like a jet, i was letting her eat at 75. Gallons per mile type fuel consumption 😂😂

@poldrag08 My dads old small cam 335 could probably keep up with an older 3406 cat. In the winter time you could outpull a 8v92TA silver 92 detroit, but the problem is that when you pull under 1800 rpms the egts would rise faster then you could lift your foot.

An HT3B Holset on a big cam 3 cummins can do that no problem, just need fuel. An HT3B holset turbo are the best things for these cat motors.

sounds like you had the secondary turbo cranked up there then. if you arent getting over 900*F with the current pressure you have even loaded 200K, id say leave it be as it is now. From my knowledge the secondary that is on the C15 is setup pretty close to max on the Compressor map from factory.

I hope you're getting a very good rate and fuel surcharge. You're dumping fuel for no reason. Try this, keep your boost under 20 pulling a hill and see how much your MPG's go up. I know people saving $25k a year in fuel running like that.

My truck has a C15 and it does not exceed 15 psi, what will the problem be?

You know, those C15 ACERT engines had the same amount of problems as the Cummins ISX EGR engines did. Although, yes they had problems, they were pretty good engines. They really had problems starting in 2007 when they used a 'flamethrower' aftertreatment system behind the turbo. Yikes!
Two reason I like CATS, at least the pre-04's that don't have ACERT - nice sounding turbos, loud jakes! Why I don't like CAT, guess.

Same horsepower? the more horse power the more and faster turbo spool. You can have same engine but different cams diffrent injectors diffrent programming. Freightliners for instance have same engines but theirs are program to save fuel so they brought down alot of the power on these great engines so takes longer to build same pressure if so.

Athony Nesbitt its not only about upgrading turbo tho 🙈. Need turbo cams injectors and a higher HP programing to build more pressure. Heck mayb that same turbo can build that same pressure however you still need to do the other upgrades and the programming.
No you don't need another turbo your truck is doing good with 20psi !!! You want 34psi out of your turbo ??? You need to spend around $5,500 to get really good power from your engine !!!!

@@Mark_Tschetter 475 c15 should have 32 pounds of boost, 550 should have 38 to 42 pounds of boost

But I have the latest and greatest low-nox file in the ECM, I think those files run lower boost then the pre low-nox.
@abrahammedal My dads series 60 pushes over 50lbs and they can do 50 stock but a cat stock should be able to do 25 pounds no problem so you may have a turbo problem. Just an idea
Very true a s60 can only push 50 pounds. The rest of us are usually pushing 80,000 pounds.
