My old high school wrestling coach back in 74 in Kansas City move to cedar rapids and coached Barry Davis and the zaleski brothers. That team were state champions. Ron James is the name of the coach.
Being at a light weight class in the eighties, we all looked up to Barry Davis. He was relentless and powerful! And we were all jealous of who his coach was, the Goat!
Barry Davis, my favorite Hawkeye of all time! His RELENTLESS pace and ultra point scoring style coupled with his passion and flair during matches was just MAGICAL to watch. Two LEGENDS right there folks!

True, most Hawks wrestle with a relentless attacking style and ultra high pace but Barry added crowd pleasing flair such as clapping, jumping around, and other things showing he truly loved the spirit of competition in a very fun way. Royce Alger and Rico Chiapperelli are two others who come to mind who often involved the crowd through crowd pleasing antics. But Barry is my favorite Hawk. 👊🙂
@@JS45678 oh ok. Would you call him the greatest Hawkeye? If I’m allowed to share my own opinions, I think Lincoln Mcilravy is the greatest Hawkeye to ever live, with Tom Brands being a close second. Mcilravy had all the aggressive pressure that Brands had, but what made him a little better is his creativity and just him being him, he did a lot of things that were unconventional and things that wouldn’t normally work, but they just did for Mcilravy, he had that Iowa Hawkeye offense and discipline, and he had the ability to go unorthodox when his normal moves weren’t working. And also, of all the Hawkeyes that have 3 NCAA championships, Mcilravy got the closest to winning 4, or at least from what I’ve seen
Dan Gable is the rational and harsh older brother while Barry is the embellishing, outgoing, story telling younger brother who wants to find some way to embarrass his older brother.
I met Barry at Edinboro, Penn wrestling camp, 1987. We had a tournament among the wrestlers & the trainers, I was paired with Barry, beat him like a salvation army drum ! Double leg take down, slammed him on his back almost pinning him. I won the match, & he was absolutely impressed. He loved the fact i throttled him, said he'd traveled the earth to find a battle like that, "your double leg was like getting hit by a mack truck", his words 😆
I heard Dan had to chase Davis down to make weight by finding him hid in the girls dorm and once the team lost to Iowa's state and apparent.y gable dropped the team 10 miles away and made them run back at least that's what I heard
I think Gable once wrestled a Twinkie and a quart of ice cream out of Davis' hands at a grocery store before the Big 10 tournament. And why does Barry remind me of Dennis Hopper?
Junk Removal Quad Cities I think I remember that story in Sports Illustrated. They had a staged photo with Barry Davis holding a shopping bag full of junk food that Coach talked him out of eating.
Berry is so playfully and easy going but don't forget he was a 3x NCAA BEAST and a bronze Medalist at the Olympics.
