I play the sax and I love it, been playing since 6th grade and I'm in 9th now, there's just something about music that just gets me hooked and want to play, music opens a whole new world for creativity and expression for anyone who wants to learn an instrument or already plays one.
I started playing violin when I was 47 years old. Or more precisely, I started learning. I am now 63 and I play almost every day. I will never be very good, but the point I am trying to make is that I love it. I am so glad that I am making this effort. The physical sensation of doing it somewhat well, makes me feel good about myself. I encourage anyone who is thinking about it to go ahead. Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly. Improvement comes in time, but feeling good about it will start on day one. Thanks for the great video story.
That's awesome man. I've played for 13 years and it's the best thing I have to look forward to every day. I'm only 17 right now, and sometimes I wonder if going to college for music is a good idea. When I open my case and pluck the strings, however, I'm reminded that my true love and passion is for music. Thanks for the motivation!

I have played 62, one hour performances for the local old folks home here. they appreciate it so much and it gives me the feeling that I can do something good for others. A bonus ! I am happy for you that you got going on this when very young. you will become so good at it ! you probably are already ! So many things are arguably an utter waste of time. Music is not !
Gregory Mahaits your story reminded me of an old man that I played with in an orchestra in Germany. The orchestra wasn't professional or anything. But this man who had only been playing for a few years was a respected heart surgeon who lived a very wealthy life I'm assuming. The main part of this story is that his wife never enoureged and never supported his decision to play the violin because she didn't want them to be second class in anything. But even though he could hardly sit right in the chair during the practices, and he could hardly ever get the right sound out of the thing, he still played because it was something that he loved to do and had fun doing.

Rob Landes I've been doing martial arts for about 13 years, I'm 23 and I'm completely self taught, but through years of practice I've honed my skills and now people ask me all of the time what classes I take and I always tell them none, I've never taken any classes. One day I want to be martial arts instructor but in my opinion I still have work to do on my skills before I would feel fit to be an instructor.

I started playing the violin when I was 7. I did it for two years and then I moved to another country, so I quit my lessons until I was 13. 6 months after, my teacher moved to another city. My new teacher was terrible, my violin was so small for me and I didn't had enough money to buy another one so I stopped again. Now I'm 17, I have a new violin and I want to start and never stop again. I love this beautiful instrument so much but I'm afraid of all the time I've lost. OH MY GOODNESS I'm on my second year of Spanish and I am honestly amazed that I understood all that Rob said like w o w GRAMMAR RULES AND EVERYTHING!! (No but I'm seriously impressed with myself because I thought I wouldn't understand a word of it ever) Regardless I agree with him!! Your English is amazing! You speak online better than kids in my class, and we're all native English speakers! I'm 16 and want to start, but I'm debating whether it's too late or not. To others, please try not to lecture me on how you're never too late; I'm half aware of this already! But I don't want to buy the instrument only to figure out that I've decided to give it up immediately. Luckily I'm as tall as I'm gonna get, and I'd only ever have to purchase one?

My parent never supported me when it comes to music, they want me to focus in my academics. In my heart, I have always dream to play the violin in front of a thousand crowd and convey my music to them. I practice the violin by myself and in a secretly matter but there are times when I get so busy in school and never got to play my violin. In the end I am still not good in playing it. I want to quit because I came to realize that my dream will never come true. I am turning 16. There is a part of me where I just couldn't give up the violin. Your video gave me inspirations so THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
Keep with it! If it's something you love, then it's worth your time. If you dedicate yourself to practice, you'll only get better over time. I believe in you!
Don't give up on it if you love it. Find a way. Don't forget that you can still take lessons as an adult...I've taught many adults and they learn very quickly! Keep at it, take risks, and doors will open for you eventually.
Please keep on playing, I was 16 when I stopped and I had the same dreams you have now. I stopped because I needed to focus on school but now I am 25 and still miss playing. Try your best to pursue your dreams, please

Awesome history Rob! I love that you mention how it was hard work that made this happen. I slacked off and didn't follow through with my Piano practice assignments. Years later I regretted and tried to pick it back up but I think my time had passed. Right now I love teaching others about phone and smart home tech and I am having a blast! Congratulations on 300K!
This is encouraging Rob... I started playing when I was 6 and played through 8 grade. I lost my parents when I was in H.S and turned to :cough: other ways of coping, and with the exception of a few times when someone else's violin was around, didn't touch it for literally 40 years. (my only real regret in life) My wife bought me one last Christmas and I've been playing a little every day again for the last few weeks. I'll never be "great", but hope to get to a point once again where I can entertain myself and maybe a few friends... I SO wish I had 1 recording of myself from back then, these old videos are priceless. Thanks!
Thanks for the kind words... a couple of weeks ago it sounded SO bad, but I'm really surprised after only a few weeks how far I've come. I've always been able to look at sheet music and "play it" in my head, but now I need to get my hands to cooperate again, lol.
I'm sixteen and I have a passion for playing competitive videogames. As silly as it seems, video games inspired me to take up martial arts. So now I'm putting all my time and energy on focusing on become a strong Muay Thai fighter because I love the sport so much. I've played soccer and tennis before I started martial arts, and honestly it interests me way more because I'm more focused now and it trains me mentally too. I've never had abs before! and I'm so satisfied with my health as of today. I'd like to say my passion for Muay Thai has changes my life for the better.
Wow. That was really inspirational and I want to add a couple sentences from my sight. I'm 25 years old. I'm still trying to finish my school which is mechanical engineering and it's my 7th year in school. I was a terrible student with low GPAs and all and this year I made a improvement in my life which was starting to violin. Now I'm playing it for 8 months and I cannot even describe how it motivates me about my life, my studies and all. I'm not a good player at all but I really enjoy practicing it, learning new pieces, trying to get better in vibrato, sounding better with more practice. Time and dedication really matters. I'm not that sad person with full of failed lessons as I used to be.I have purpose in life now. I'm finishing my school in the middle of 2018. Can't wait to get a job and buy myself a better violin with my first salary. Most likely I'll never be so good at violin but I think I found myself a lifetime friend which helps me through hard times. For the people who hesitate because they are feeling old to start a violin or new instrument, start it tomorrow. It's not late. It only takes dedication and lots of practice and after a couple years you'll remember the day you started to playing violin as one of the best days in your life. It's definitely better to give it a shot instead of regretting of not doing it.

I learned a little bit of violin in grade school but never pursued it after that. I have always loved the idea of playing. So at 62 I bought at dvd of how to play the violin and taught my grand daughter and grandson what I knew. Just the basics. I decided then to learn myself. I found a teacher, and she is teaching my granddaughter and myself. I'm 63 and learning what I missed all these years. I am determined to learn and practice, practice, practice almost every day. I love it. I watch youtube videos and have even saw yours, "Hallelujah". I'm excited to see how far I can go with this.
I started playing the Violin when I was 11, at my middle school they offered us free lessons for a lot of different instruments and I fell in love with this beauty instantly the first time I was in front of one of them. I continued studying it until I was 15/16 and stopped because High School was too time consuming for me and I felt I wasn't good enough to do both so I gave up and stopped going to my weekly lessons. Ever since that moment for one year or two my eyes were filled with tears every single time I heard a Violin. I stopped getting emotional and now and again treated myself listening to some amazing compositions on internet. A few days ago I was in Vienna (Austria) and since then I started to miss again my violin or being able to play it. This video made me realise that maybe if I didn't stop and tried a little harder back then now I would not have the regret I have but still I love to be able to experiences and progresses that other amazing people did at playing the best musical instrument out there (imo). So people keep on trying even if it seems hard or impossible, sacrifices will be repaid, regrets instead will always be there and they will lead you to nothing. Ariana Weasley I had six teachers in seven years. None of them bothered to teach me viberato and my last teacher was really annoyed. One day I just worked it out on my own and came to class really proud of myself. He told me "stop playing with viberato."
I has a similar childhood, until my first real stage fright. I loved playing till then. I was so scared I forgot to bring my music on stage! I was told that I played well though and never missed a note. But, I never played again. Now, nearing retirement age I can't get it out of my mind. My grandfathers back 3 generations played, maybe it's that mixed with a pinch of mortality that has captured my mind. Someday soon maybe. Keep up creating this such beautiful music. I'm a digital artist and I absolutely love drawing. The quote "Art is how we decorate space. Music is how we decorate time" was in mind for the longest time. Since I was already an artist, I also wanted to decorate time. One day I watched a video of a violin progress and I was inspired to try to pick up the violin. So it's been 4 months since I started and I'm really happy and proud that I decided to learn to play.
@@fres906 Wow I've been playing for three years now and picking up the violin is the best decision I've ever made! I can play intermediate pieces well and I learned how to play by ear. Currently I'm in the Suzuki book 5. Still having some struggle memorizing pieces but hard work definitely pays off!

When I was 15 I took a few guitar lessons, about 1 and a half year, so I can play comfortably the basics of this instrument. At the age of 18 I started piano lessons, and here I am now, two years later, I am so happy I made that decision because piano is my passion now. Beginning an instrument in adulthood is a bit tough, I really struggle finding enough free time (I am also studying mathematics in uni), but it's definitely worth a try. Sometimes I feel like I need to give up, because I don't spend enough time studying maths and I pass subjects with low marks etc, but I just can't give up on piano, I love it so much... guys just do what you've been dreaming your whole life. Age is just a number. You won't regret it. The only key you need to succeed is practice.

ANNi I know that :/ you can't be a professional athlete if you don't start early. But at least you can work out on what you like as a hobbie, nobody can tell you that you're too old. Take my father as an inspiration, he started winter swimming (in the cold winter sea, yes) when he was 50 as a relaxing activity. Now he is so fit for his age, and not only that, but he started marathon running last year, and he is 59 xD
Hello Rob, I was an active duty in the Air Force for 20 years as a vehicle mechanic. I retired from the AF and got a civilian job for the AF as a Fire truck and Refueling truck mechanic. So today I continue to serve our country. That is what I do. But it makes me happy to listen to your music. You are a great American Rob Landes.
This is an excellent video. It shows how hard you have to work. I have been playing the organ for many years very badly and I have just now at age 76 begun to seriously try to learn. Life is short. Don't waste it doing mediocre or badly. You'll be sorry when you reach my age. One thing is that you are never too old to enjoy something and do it to the best of your ability. Play on.
Im soon going to play the cello im 16 and i feel like im starting a little late but what is there to try! Im going to try my best to succeed in being a professional cellist in the end thanks for the motivation!
Bloom Swift it might be pretty hard to start cello at this age, but as long as you're not past your 20s, you should be good. If you want to be a cellist, go for it. But I must warn you. As a violinist, I can say that string instruments are very hard. Especially the cello. Even though you might not seem to make a lot of progress at first, you'll learn a lot and it's a very good learning experience. Best of luck to you.
You can start playing whatever instrument you want at whatever age you want. If you keep practicing and have good teachers you will have success!! I have fun with it! I play the cello too and love it.
I started violin at 13, which is pretty late but if you are dedicated enough you can succeed. I was shit at first but now I can say that I'm pretty good (I'm 16) Practice! Practice! Practice! It's annoying to be told that all the time but it's true. Stay dedicated and good luck!
My son is a professional oboe and musical director. I stopped counting how many times he wanted to quit. No money, no prospects, etc. I constantly encouraged him , although I thought that he would never be able to make a living at his craft. Has BA and Masters in Oboe performance. Time and time again going to auditions with no takers. You have a musical gift - nobody wants. -Finally found oboe position in a Mexican Symphony Orchestra - pay is lousy, but at least he is performing his craft. Now is musical director for a Sistema orchestra. Pay is lousy, hours are lousy, but he is a musician. I am glad you returned to become a musician. Glad you are a member of that group.
I started playing the violin in 4th grade. I played all through collage and further, until one fateful day a dirty landlord broke in to my apartment and stole my violin. I've been plaged with depression and anxiety ever since, to the point where I cannot have a job anymore. This was 7 years ago. I am 31 now. Your videos have reminded me of that feeling of love I once had as a violinist and has inspired me to seek a new violin, however poor quality, and play again. I thank you with all my heart.

I play the piano almost everyday and I get lessons there since 3 years and I'm happy to say that I also started playing the violin this year! Some people say that you can't learn two instruments at the same time but I think you just need to love the instruments to do it
Currently, I have been playing violin for 5 years and viola for 4 years. You were my biggest inspiration. A lot of my classmates say that learning the violin/viola is an easy task as you just have to move your hands. I showed them your vid to prove that learning violin/viola is not just moving your hands but in order for you to play well, you have to also play from yor heart and I can see that with you. I started playing violin at.. pretty much eight years old. I'm still learning yes, but I'm pretty good for my age. My teacher was impressed. I have never quit and love it a lot. Music is a great path to pursue
I started playing the cello in 4th grade, but my parents never forced me to practice every day. I ended up playing out of school only about once a month or less. That was until a year ago when I was 15 and I watched Mischa Maisky play Bach Cello Suite 3 Bourree. I listened to that for at least 100 loops, then decided that I could play this piece if I put in some effort outside of school. That was the first time I've really gotten genuinely excited about playing, and I've been going for a year straight since then, playing average three hours a day completely self-motivated. I'm trying to make up all the lost practice time back in elementary school. My favorite is still the Cello Suites, but I'm expanding now to Elgar and Haydn with the help of my great private teacher (who I think also gave me some inspiration). I hope to continue to get better at the current rate I am and maybe (hopefully) be as good as any professional soloist. Kinda wish my parents would've forced me to play every day like your did, but now I just need to put in a little more effort and thought into my practice. (Love your story btw)
I spend my time practicing violin as well. I'm 15 and working on Lalo and Paganini and loads of technique stuff and practicing 5 hours a day (you know how it is) but I feel like I'm starting to miss out on a lot of stuff. So many times I have to decline offers to do things because I have a rehearsal or a lesson or I still have to practice. I make a lot of sacrifices for violin, but it's hard to find a balance. I'm not even sure if I want to pursue it as a career. But then what? What was the last 12 years of practicing and sacrificing for? I love it but sometimes it's hard to keep going, but I do it anyway, because like you said, if you put in the time and sacrifice, you will be successful.
You're so dedicated! I'm 17, started when I was 4. I played Lalo last year, but I still never practice enough. I maybe practice 2 hours a week, if that. I feel ya with the sacrifice though. After 13 years, it's a shame to consider anything but music as a career, but ya gotta pay them bills. Keep with it though. If anything, lower your practice time, but never quit. By the sounds of it, you're quite talented. Don't throw that away. I believe in you, you'll make it.
Hi Ethan. These are great questions to be asking at your age. If you feel pressured to go into a career and don't absolutely love it with all your heart, I would take time to experience new things. The classical music route is exceptionally difficult to make a living in, but if you eat, sleep, breathe, and dream classical music, then you can make it. I love playing the violin, but I discovered that I loved creating my own arrangements of rock and pop music most people already know by presenting it to them in a beautiful and compelling way. Maybe you could try experimenting with your music in a new direction? You've done amazing work, but even if you stop playing for awhile, music has taught you so much about discipline, grit, dedication, and sacrifice that you can take into any avenue of your life.
Ethan Mayer, don't listen to this Izzy character. I stopped playing violin when I was in 8th grade after 9 years of playing and it's the biggest regret of my life. As an adult, every 4th guy I know can play Free Bird and Smoke on the Water on guitar, but they can only dream of playing a violin. Take a break, change your style, and maybe you won't pursue it as a career, but you'll literally cry if 40 years from now you look back and can't play a lick... trust me... I know.
I played the violin since the age of 7. I kinda did like it because I had potential and stuff, but music wasn't actually my life until I moved to America (I'm Russian). I started playing viola, I actually enjoy it (despite people saying violas are bad cuz they not ). I try to practice at least 2 hrs a day. Music is totally my life now, and I definitely have the passion to do it. I only 13 years old and I hope I will make a lot of progress in the future:))
Ever since I was little, I always drew. And when I would draw, I would always create some sort of story to the drawing or character. There were many times in my life where people would discourage me or try to make me stop. And at one point I nearly did, I lost interest in my craft of drawing and leaned more towards the writing part of it. It took me a while to realize that one doesn't feel right without the other. So now, I try to draw as much as I can. And someday I hope to make a career out of it, to love what I do. I hope I never stop again and always believe in my imagination.
Honestly, I believe there is no such thing as talent. Those who master their craft know this the most. As an artist I didn't start out drawing masterpieces. Violinists don't pick up a violin and immediately go into an orchestra, pianists don't just lay their fingers on the keys in front of stadiums. Singers don't just walk onto stage for a concert. Writers don't just create novels. Everyone has been pouring their blood, sweat, and tears into what they do. Talent has no part in it. Every artist couldn't even draw a circle, every musician couldn't do more than three notes and have any idea what they are doing. No singer could sing a song without screwing up an octave.
I must say that I disagree. I think there is such thing as talent. I do not think that you need talent to be a master, or that you can get anywhere without a lot of practice. However, it is my opinion that talent is a thing
I believe in the idea that people are innately more gifted in certain areas than others. As a kid, I always outperformed others in sports. People just pick things up at different rates. It's understanding a difficult concept a professor is trying to teach before everyone else. Violin skill comes easier to one student than it does the next. It's only fair because I think if we aren't gifted in one area, we are bound to be gifted in another.
I'm a composer on UA-cam. I've been composing for many years and I love being able to create new songs and melodies. It's so rewarding to work on a piano song and then sit back and hear the musical novel unfold after its finished. I find your channel informative and inspiring. Michael
I started playing piano when i was about 7 years old... i finished musical school last year at the age of 13... i was sometimes feeling lazy to practice piano even if a ton of people told me that i am talented... those words made me realize that i am just waisting what someone gave me so i started enjoying what am i playing and i started doing it for myself because classic music really calms me down and i feel wonderful playing it.

Unfortunately I don't have videos or photos of when I started playing the guitar or keyboard but they're all in my mind! Everything. From my first songs that I tried to learn on the keyboard and the guitar. The struggle every time I tried to tune my guitar. The first time I changed strings! Awesome times! Keep playing Rob! Yes, I agree. Rob is a fantastic violinist, he deserves more. But maybe many people are not Interested in orchestra instrument music. I think many people like vocal music.
I hate when people say things like talented or gifted. It's in a way an insult to every hour of practice one puts into a craft. It's also a cop out for those making the comment to not work hard at what they want to be good at. I know it's not that simple and of course some people are born naturally good at certain things, but nobody is born a master at anything. Rob might have had a natural affinity for the violin but he clearly has put in thousands and thousands of hours that he could have spent relaxing, watching TV, etc. that is an amazing work ethic.
Being talented IS actually like winning the lottery, by definition of the words. That's why a lot of artists and musicians get offended when they are told they are talented, or at least dislike the word. You don't have talent. You have an amazing skill that you have honed and practiced for nearly 30 years. "Talent" implies you're just good naturally and don't need practice, and the concept of talent is ridiculous. You are, how ever, very very good at what you do. I found you about an hour ago, watched a bunch of videos. Subscribed, man. I love your covers.

ive been a professional artist since the age of ten, but ive always admired the violin and the saxophone. i played the saxophone for two years and then i switched to piano. i was always discouraged by my teachers when they told me to give up and i wasnt going to make it as an artist.. and since i never gave up i now own my own art store, i got my tattoo apprenticeship when i was 16, and im 19 now... im getting back into music, and im going to practice violin, and get back to playing the saxophone.. i admire people like you who live your dreams, and inspire others.
Musical skill usually runs in the family especially with some of us Koreans. My mom was a classical pianist and we were always surrounded by the greats from Beethoven down to Tchaikovsky. Thanks for sharing because it brought back memories but my hindsight never followed all the way through. Bravo Rob and you have a follower.
Wow, I remember subscribing to this channel and being like wow this guy is amazing. I play the violin myself and I have been playing for 7 years (almost 14 yrs old) and I am in awe how Rob Landes plays his violin. I’m a fan now. You’re amazing and I know it does take hard work to succeed, and it definitely pays off. Huge fan!

Rob thank you for posting this video! It truly helps me! I started playing the violin at 38(its my 3rd instrument after piano and flute) and even though its the most difficult I ever played its the most rewarding may be because I'm an adult now. What you say about practice and sacrifice is totally true! It took me a year to learn to hold the bow properly and several oThers to train my left fingers to fall right where they're supposed too! I play every year at recitals but this last one I was able to play my first concerto piece and enjoy it! That day something happened and I felt like an invisible glass ceiling broke and gave me such a boost that I'm confident now I can play anything if I practice and try hard! I believe I can do it! I just turned 52 and I'm enjoying playing more than ever.I've had awesome teachers but the one I have now has helped me and encouraged me so much that I keep on pressing on! Rob you've encouraged me with this video! I wish I was younger but...thank God I can play at 52! God bless you!!!

I always loved Nigel Kennedy's Largo best, but if you do it, I'd totally buy it! I've heard several Spigels, but only one of them made my spine tingle, the others were just fab. I'm desperate to gear it played that we'll again. It was on a classical channel on the radio and I didn't catch who it was. I LOVE your playing and just sent it to my husband and sisters :)
I am a violin amateur, I was really touched when the Laro's Symphonie espagnole sounded, for it is a song of ten level examination in China and I played it at the same age. In China, so many kids have to practice instrument (forced by their parents) every day, only a few children really like it, and most of them give up for the heavy school work during the middle scholl. I am lucky for I didn't give up, well it's painful for my childhood, but it worth at last. Thanks Rob for your great video!

Its the same for me with my UA-cam channel, I started making really shitty videos a few years ago, and as I grew and got more support I was encouraged to put more and more effort into it, and today I dare say my videos are pretty good. I chose to keep my old shitty videos up because it shows how the quality evolved over time.
My name is also Robert. I'm 14 and have been playing trombone for 3 years. I have excelled so much because of my passion for music, and the freedom it gives me, to create, to lift myself and others, to create utter beauty from a mouthpiece and a hunk of beautiful metal. I aspire to play trombone and teach music. I am hoping to make all state as a freshman, (huge deal in Texas) stories like this inspire me to much. People have often told me I can't do things ok trombone because of my age and one of the reasons why I have taken off so fast is because I strive to show others that I can. To prove to myself and those around me that my age has little to do with my ability. I practice for about 3 hours a day. I get up at 5:45 and get to my school at 6:30 every morning and play from 6:30 until 7:45 or 8. I don't eat lunch so I can practice. I spend some nights until midnight practicing. I love it so much. I hope that someday I can inspire people as you do every day.
I am choking for several hours per day. I have a severe LPR and no money to resolve it. But i am not jealous of anyone. Such stories of people doing what they are passionate about, prevents me from commiting suicide. I hope one day there will be an easy cure for this disease from hell.

But it isnt acid that is culprit in lpr, it is more enzyme pepsin that inflammes everything on it's way from nose to chest. Antacids and proton pump inhibitors dont work for me. It helps people with heartburn only. I need a surgery.

I spend SOOO much time on gymnastics. I am a xcel silver gymnast, and I practice 8 hours s week. I also “do” cello, but i did it for strings class at school, so I rented a cello and now I returned it and am waiting to grow up so I can get my own full sized cello! I LOVE your work, Rob. Keep it up!
My 2 passions in life is music and art. In a way they kind of go hand in hand, I believe music is audible art or art for the ears. I started playing the flute when I was 10 I am now in college (they don't have a band or an orchestra) and I still come home every weekend to play with my hometown's pep band. I also taught myself how to play various flutes that I find (mainly piccolo, Indian flute and Chinese flute) and I am learning how to play the ukulele. I also would love to learn how to play the piano but I don't have much time with school and all. Now for the other passion, art, I started drawing just like everyone else, until about 1st grade. We had an assignment where we had to draw a tree. When I got it back I brought it home and proudly showed it to my mother. (she is a very good artist herself) When she pointed out all the different animals I drew I knew I needed to keep going. Now 13 years later I am able to life like drawings and paintings of people and animals. Now I'm going to school for something way off.... Veterinary technology...basically a veterinary nurse. I know weird but I have always loved animals.
Hi Rob I got emotional to watch this video, it reminds me when I started to play violin for the first time, I was watching a TV program where a kid was playing violin and I got fascinated straight away and I told my mother that I had to play violin. I started at 7 and played for 5 years, then I stopped, when my mother died my teacher sent me a letter where he said that If I wanted he could have given to me free lessons, I did it for 1 year then stopped again. Now, after 6 years I'm playing again practicing at least 3 hours a day with a teacher and I really would like to become good enough to live with music. What u said at the end of the video it's true, talent without dedication and sacrifice it's nothing. Thanks for sharing this video man...

Rob, I’m currently a first year college student studying business. Been playing violin for about 12 years, but was thinking about dropping the violin because of my business studies. I recently decided to start releasing covers on UA-cam as a way for me to not lose my passion for the instrument. I discovered you by chance as your Ted talk showed up on my recommended list. Was never so moved by a Ted Talk. Not sure if you’re gonna see this comment, but I just wanted you to know that your Ted presentation and this video, have really reignited a passion in me. I am from Africa, I have been training really hard and sacrificing my blood sweat and tears for the on thing I love, running. I started when I was 3 and my dad would take me outside everyday to train me, my dad was in the Olympics and now so am I, I am Usain Bolt.
Thank you for this video, not often we get to see what it actually takes to get to a level that can be considered a success. It is a great reminder of the less popular side of it, the hard work and probably more important the consistency involved. Honestly, my blessing/curse has always been the fact that my interests have waned, wavered and varied over the years. I do not prefer to maintain a focus on a single aspect of a given undertaking, but rather a wide variety of activities from drumming - 20 years, weight training - 45 years, various sports from baseball, hockey, tennis, golf, martial arts, rollerblading, etc. I've been writing poetry since 1998 and have a book of poetry written. So, while I am master of nuttin, I am very much a hack of multiple trades. What I miss most - drums. Been years since I've played, but do plan to play again. Thank, Rob.

It is quite time consuming. Especially starting fresh. If you got yourself an instrument and at least one lesson a week, though (45-60 min lessons) I think it's possible. At least you already got down reading music, rhythms, and that type of stuff! If it's something you wanna so, go for it! I've played for 13 years and I couldn't be happier!
I think you should do it. I recently took up guitar after playing piano for the past 3 years and I find the process is much smoother and genuinely feels easier after already playing one instrument. you should defo go for it
I've been playing violin for 6 years now (I'm 12) and I think this inspires me to try better at it. I haven't enjoyed it much until now, but I'd like to put more into, and find out what I like to play.
One tip from me. Never ever think that you practiced enough. I used to practice about 1-2 hours a day on violin when i was in middle school. Now after practicing even 4 hours i know, how little i did and i just want next day to come to start doing the rest. And the same thing every day ;) And never practice too much. Perlman, the best of the best says that 5 hours a day is enough. Cheers
Three years later, my first time watching this video. I would like to say as of recent personal events I stopped trying to learn the guitar. I had only been a few months in untill my reason to play became a threat to my sanity, my dad. Now I won't go into detail but I think I could pick up that guitar again. I've started to play violin with 5 years, and continued it until I was 14. Then I stopped it, because I had some troubles to achieve my education/grades. And after 25 years I started again to play the violin. At the moment I'm not even close to the level where I was when I stopped, but I'm now making good progress with usually playing about 2h per day. As for my passion, it is woodworking both in fine furniture and in turning. I am usually out in the shop from 10 PM till about 4 AM nightly. Still work a full time and part time job. I started playing violin when I was 47 years old. Or more precisely, I started learning. I am now 63 and I play almost every day. I will never be very good, but the point I am trying to make is that I love it. I am so glad that I am making this effort. The physical sensation of doing it somewhat well, makes me feel good about myself. I encourage anyone who is thinking about it to go ahead. Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly. Improvement comes in time, but feeling good about it will start on day one.

That's awesome man. I've played for 13 years and it's the best thing I have to look forward to every day. I'm only 17 right now, and sometimes I wonder if going to college for music is a good idea. When I open my case and pluck the strings, however, I'm reminded that my true love and passion is for music. Thanks for the motivation!

I have played 62, one hour performances for the local old folks home here. they appreciate it so much and it gives me the feeling that I can do something good for others. A bonus !

Gregory Mahaits your story reminded me of an old man that I played with in an orchestra in Germany. The orchestra wasn't professional or anything. But this man who had only been playing for a few years was a respected heart surgeon who lived a very wealthy life I'm assuming. The main part of this story is that his wife never enoureged and never supported his decision to play the violin because she didn't want them to be second class in anything. But even though he could hardly sit right in the chair during the practices, and he could hardly ever get the right sound out of the thing, he still played because it was something that he loved to do and had fun doing.

Rob Landes I've been doing martial arts for about 13 years, I'm 23 and I'm completely self taught, but through years of practice I've honed my skills and now people ask me all of the time what classes I take and I always tell them none, I've never taken any classes. One day I want to be martial arts instructor but in my opinion I still have work to do on my skills before I would feel fit to be an instructor.

I started playing the violin when I was 7. I did it for two years and then I moved to another country, so I quit my lessons until I was 13. 6 months after, my teacher moved to another city. My new teacher was terrible, my violin was so small for me and I didn't had enough money to buy another one so I stopped again.
Now I'm 17, I have a new violin and I want to start and never stop again. I love this beautiful instrument so much but I'm afraid of all the time I've lost.

My parent never supported me when it comes to music, they want me to focus in my academics. In my heart, I have always dream to play the violin in front of a thousand crowd and convey my music to them. I practice the violin by myself and in a secretly matter but there are times when I get so busy in school and never got to play my violin. In the end I am still not good in playing it. I want to quit because I came to realize that my dream will never come true. I am turning 16. There is a part of me where I just couldn't give up the violin. Your video gave me inspirations so THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
Keep with it! If it's something you love, then it's worth your time. If you dedicate yourself to practice, you'll only get better over time. I believe in you!
Don't give up on it if you love it. Find a way. Don't forget that you can still take lessons as an adult...I've taught many adults and they learn very quickly! Keep at it, take risks, and doors will open for you eventually.
Please keep on playing, I was 16 when I stopped and I had the same dreams you have now. I stopped because I needed to focus on school but now I am 25 and still miss playing. Try your best to pursue your dreams, please

Awesome history Rob! I love that you mention how it was hard work that made this happen. I slacked off and didn't follow through with my Piano practice assignments. Years later I regretted and tried to pick it back up but I think my time had passed. Right now I love teaching others about phone and smart home tech and I am having a blast! Congratulations on 300K!

This is encouraging Rob... I started playing when I was 6 and played through 8 grade. I lost my parents when I was in H.S and turned to :cough: other ways of coping, and with the exception of a few times when someone else's violin was around, didn't touch it for literally 40 years. (my only real regret in life) My wife bought me one last Christmas and I've been playing a little every day again for the last few weeks. I'll never be "great", but hope to get to a point once again where I can entertain myself and maybe a few friends... I SO wish I had 1 recording of myself from back then, these old videos are priceless. Thanks!

I'm sixteen and I have a passion for playing competitive videogames. As silly as it seems, video games inspired me to take up martial arts. So now I'm putting all my time and energy on focusing on become a strong Muay Thai fighter because I love the sport so much. I've played soccer and tennis before I started martial arts, and honestly it interests me way more because I'm more focused now and it trains me mentally too. I've never had abs before! and I'm so satisfied with my health as of today. I'd like to say my passion for Muay Thai has changes my life for the better.
Wow. That was really inspirational and I want to add a couple sentences from my sight. I'm 25 years old. I'm still trying to finish my school which is mechanical engineering and it's my 7th year in school. I was a terrible student with low GPAs and all and this year I made a improvement in my life which was starting to violin. Now I'm playing it for 8 months and I cannot even describe how it motivates me about my life, my studies and all. I'm not a good player at all but I really enjoy practicing it, learning new pieces, trying to get better in vibrato, sounding better with more practice. Time and dedication really matters. I'm not that sad person with full of failed lessons as I used to be.I have purpose in life now. I'm finishing my school in the middle of 2018. Can't wait to get a job and buy myself a better violin with my first salary. Most likely I'll never be so good at violin but I think I found myself a lifetime friend which helps me through hard times. For the people who hesitate because they are feeling old to start a violin or new instrument, start it tomorrow. It's not late. It only takes dedication and lots of practice and after a couple years you'll remember the day you started to playing violin as one of the best days in your life. It's definitely better to give it a shot instead of regretting of not doing it.

Always wanted to be a truck driver since I was 16. 50 yrs. later I'm still a truck driver. I have a great life because I'm doing what I love, not because it's the only thing I know how to do...It's because I chose this. And if I could live life over again I would choose the same path.

I learned a little bit of violin in grade school but never pursued it after that. I have always loved the idea of playing. So at 62 I bought at dvd of how to play the violin and taught my grand daughter and grandson what I knew. Just the basics. I decided then to learn myself. I found a teacher, and she is teaching my granddaughter and myself. I'm 63 and learning what I missed all these years. I am determined to learn and practice, practice, practice almost every day. I love it. I watch youtube videos and have even saw yours, "Hallelujah". I'm excited to see how far I can go with this.
When you said your mom was making you practice half an hour a day I thought 'Go thank your mom'. She did a fine thing because you play beautiful.

I started playing the Violin when I was 11, at my middle school they offered us free lessons for a lot of different instruments and I fell in love with this beauty instantly the first time I was in front of one of them. I continued studying it until I was 15/16 and stopped because High School was too time consuming for me and I felt I wasn't good enough to do both so I gave up and stopped going to my weekly lessons. Ever since that moment for one year or two my eyes were filled with tears every single time I heard a Violin. I stopped getting emotional and now and again treated myself listening to some amazing compositions on internet. A few days ago I was in Vienna (Austria) and since then I started to miss again my violin or being able to play it. This video made me realise that maybe if I didn't stop and tried a little harder back then now I would not have the regret I have but still I love to be able to experiences and progresses that other amazing people did at playing the best musical instrument out there (imo). So people keep on trying even if it seems hard or impossible, sacrifices will be repaid, regrets instead will always be there and they will lead you to nothing.

Ariana Weasley I had six teachers in seven years. None of them bothered to teach me viberato and my last teacher was really annoyed. One day I just worked it out on my own and came to class really proud of myself. He told me "stop playing with viberato."

I has a similar childhood, until my first real stage fright. I loved playing till then. I was so scared I forgot to bring my music on stage! I was told that I played well though and never missed a note. But, I never played again. Now, nearing retirement age I can't get it out of my mind. My grandfathers back 3 generations played, maybe it's that mixed with a pinch of mortality that has captured my mind. Someday soon maybe. Keep up creating this such beautiful music. I'm a digital artist and I absolutely love drawing. The quote "Art is how we decorate space. Music is how we decorate time" was in mind for the longest time. Since I was already an artist, I also wanted to decorate time. One day I watched a video of a violin progress and I was inspired to try to pick up the violin. So it's been 4 months since I started and I'm really happy and proud that I decided to learn to play.

Currently I'm in the Suzuki book 5. Still having some struggle memorizing pieces but hard work definitely pays off!

When I was 15 I took a few guitar lessons, about 1 and a half year, so I can play comfortably the basics of this instrument. At the age of 18 I started piano lessons, and here I am now, two years later, I am so happy I made that decision because piano is my passion now. Beginning an instrument in adulthood is a bit tough, I really struggle finding enough free time (I am also studying mathematics in uni), but it's definitely worth a try. Sometimes I feel like I need to give up, because I don't spend enough time studying maths and I pass subjects with low marks etc, but I just can't give up on piano, I love it so much...
guys just do what you've been dreaming your whole life. Age is just a number. You won't regret it. The only key you need to succeed is practice.

ANNi I know that :/ you can't be a professional athlete if you don't start early. But at least you can work out on what you like as a hobbie, nobody can tell you that you're too old. Take my father as an inspiration, he started winter swimming (in the cold winter sea, yes) when he was 50 as a relaxing activity. Now he is so fit for his age, and not only that, but he started marathon running last year, and he is 59 xD
Hello Rob, I was an active duty in the Air Force for 20 years as a vehicle mechanic. I retired from the AF and got a civilian job for the AF as a Fire truck and Refueling truck mechanic. This is an excellent video. It shows how hard you have to work. I have been playing the organ for many years very badly and I have just now at age 76 begun to seriously try to learn. Life is short. Don't waste it doing mediocre or badly. You'll be sorry when you reach my age. One thing is that you are never too old to enjoy something and do it to the best of your ability. Play on.

Bloom Swift it might be pretty hard to start cello at this age, but as long as you're not past your 20s, you should be good. If you want to be a cellist, go for it. But I must warn you. As a violinist, I can say that string instruments are very hard. Especially the cello. Even though you might not seem to make a lot of progress at first, you'll learn a lot and it's a very good learning experience. Best of luck to you.
You can start playing whatever instrument you want at whatever age you want. If you keep practicing and have good teachers you will have success!! I have fun with it! I play the cello too and love it.
I started violin at 13, which is pretty late but if you are dedicated enough you can succeed. I was shit at first but now I can say that I'm pretty good (I'm 16) Practice! Practice! Practice! It's annoying to be told that all the time but it's true.

My son is a professional oboe and musical director. I stopped counting how many times he wanted to quit. No money, no prospects, etc. I constantly encouraged him , although I thought that he would never be able to make a living at his craft. Has BA and Masters in Oboe performance. Time and time again going to auditions with no takers. You have a musical gift - nobody wants. -Finally found oboe position in a Mexican Symphony Orchestra - pay is lousy, but at least he is performing his craft. Now is musical director for a Sistema orchestra. Pay is lousy, hours are lousy, but he is a musician. I am glad you returned to become a musician. Glad you are a member of that group.
I started playing the violin in 4th grade. I played all through collage and further, until one fateful day a dirty landlord broke in to my apartment and stole my violin. I've been plaged with depression and anxiety ever since, to the point where I cannot have a job anymore. This was 7 years ago. I am 31 now. Your videos have reminded me of that feeling of love I once had as a violinist and has inspired me to seek a new violin, however poor quality, and play again. I thank you with all my heart.

Despite i'm born in 1981 and never done something professional to express my self and my music I was always involved with hip-hop and drum n bass music in my youth i always wanted to do something serious and internet give me the time to express my self and my songs in the outer globe with soundcloud and music sharing. Now i have a family and a full time job 8 hours a day with a good salary not to complain but music is still in me. Still making drum n bass tracks but never did something serious. My time is gone i think, hope its never to late for me. But today Rob i give my 4 year son a Walther melodica piano to play together and practice for the future. He loved it instantly .When I saw your video now you made me cry bro. That was so inspirational and motivating to stick my son to play music and learn what my parents didnt learn to me. I play the piano almost everyday and I get lessons there since 3 years and I'm happy to say that I also started playing the violin this year! Some people say that you can't learn two instruments at the same time but I think you just need to love the instruments to do it

Currently, I have been playing violin for 5 years and viola for 4 years. You were my biggest inspiration. A lot of my classmates say that learning the violin/viola is an easy task as you just have to move your hands. I showed them your vid to prove that learning violin/viola is not just moving your hands but in order for you to play well, you have to also play from yor heart and I can see that with you. Thanks again for making me the violinist/violist I am today.
I started playing violin at.. pretty much eight years old. I'm still learning yes, but I'm pretty good for my age. My teacher was impressed. I have never quit and love it a lot. Music is a great path to pursue
I started playing the cello in 4th grade, but my parents never forced me to practice every day. I ended up playing out of school only about once a month or less. That was until a year ago when I was 15 and I watched Mischa Maisky play Bach Cello Suite 3 Bourree. I listened to that for at least 100 loops, then decided that I could play this piece if I put in some effort outside of school. That was the first time I've really gotten genuinely excited about playing, and I've been going for a year straight since then, playing average three hours a day completely self-motivated. I'm trying to make up all the lost practice time back in elementary school. My favorite is still the Cello Suites, but I'm expanding now to Elgar and Haydn with the help of my great private teacher (who I think also gave me some inspiration). I hope to continue to get better at the current rate I am and maybe (hopefully) be as good as any professional soloist. Kinda wish my parents would've forced me to play every day like your did, but now I just need to put in a little more effort and thought into my practice. (Love your story btw)

I spend my time practicing violin as well. I'm 15 and working on Lalo and Paganini and loads of technique stuff and practicing 5 hours a day (you know how it is) but I feel like I'm starting to miss out on a lot of stuff. So many times I have to decline offers to do things because I have a rehearsal or a lesson or I still have to practice. I make a lot of sacrifices for violin, but it's hard to find a balance. I'm not even sure if I want to pursue it as a career. But then what? What was the last 12 years of practicing and sacrificing for? I love it but sometimes it's hard to keep going, but I do it anyway, because like you said, if you put in the time and sacrifice, you will be successful.

You're so dedicated! I'm 17, started when I was 4. I played Lalo last year, but I still never practice enough. I maybe practice 2 hours a week, if that. I feel ya with the sacrifice though. After 13 years, it's a shame to consider anything but music as a career, but ya gotta pay them bills. Keep with it though. If anything, lower your practice time, but never quit. By the sounds of it, you're quite talented. Don't throw that away. I believe in you, you'll make it.
Hi Ethan. These are great questions to be asking at your age. If you feel pressured to go into a career and don't absolutely love it with all your heart, I would take time to experience new things. The classical music route is exceptionally difficult to make a living in, but if you eat, sleep, breathe, and dream classical music, then you can make it. I love playing the violin, but I discovered that I loved creating my own arrangements of rock and pop music most people already know by presenting it to them in a beautiful and compelling way. Maybe you could try experimenting with your music in a new direction? You've done amazing work, but even if you stop playing for awhile, music has taught you so much about discipline, grit, dedication, and sacrifice that you can take into any avenue of your life.
Ethan Mayer, don't listen to this Izzy character. I stopped playing violin when I was in 8th grade after 9 years of playing and it's the biggest regret of my life. As an adult, every 4th guy I know can play Free Bird and Smoke on the Water on guitar, but they can only dream of playing a violin. Take a break, change your style, and maybe you won't pursue it as a career, but you'll literally cry if 40 years from now you look back and can't play a lick... trust me... I know.
I played the violin since the age of 7. I kinda did like it because I had potential and stuff, but music wasn't actually my life until I moved to America (I'm Russian). I started playing viola, I actually enjoy it (despite people saying violas are bad cuz they not ). I try to practice at least 2 hrs a day. Music is totally my life now, and I definitely have the passion to do it. I only 13 years old and I hope I will make a lot of progress in the future:))
Ever since I was little, I always drew. And when I would draw, I would always create some sort of story to the drawing or character. There were many times in my life where people would discourage me or try to make me stop. And at one point I nearly did, I lost interest in my craft of drawing and leaned more towards the writing part of it. It took me a while to realize that one doesn't feel right without the other. So now, I try to draw as much as I can. And someday I hope to make a career out of it, to love what I do. I hope I never stop again and always believe in my imagination.

Honestly, I believe there is no such thing as talent. Those who master their craft know this the most. As an artist I didn't start out drawing masterpieces. Violinists don't pick up a violin and immediately go into an orchestra, pianists don't just lay their fingers on the keys in front of stadiums. Singers don't just walk onto stage for a concert. Writers don't just create novels. Everyone has been pouring their blood, sweat, and tears into what they do. Talent has no part in it. Every artist couldn't even draw a circle, every musician couldn't do more than three notes and have any idea what they are doing. No singer could sing a song without screwing up an octave.

I must say that I disagree. I think there is such thing as talent. I do not think that you need talent to be a master, or that you can get anywhere without a lot of practice. However, it is my opinion that talent is a thing
I believe in the idea that people are innately more gifted in certain areas than others. As a kid, I always outperformed others in sports. People just pick things up at different rates. It's understanding a difficult concept a professor is trying to teach before everyone else. Violin skill comes easier to one student than it does the next. It's only fair because I think if we aren't gifted in one area, we are bound to be gifted in another.
I'm a composer on UA-cam. I've been composing for many years and I love being able to create new songs and melodies. It's so rewarding to work on a piano song and then sit back and hear the musical novel unfold after its finished.

From my first songs that I tried to learn on the keyboard and the guitar. The struggle every time I tried to tune my guitar. The first time I changed strings! Awesome times! Keep playing Rob! I hate when people say things like talented or gifted. It's in a way an insult to every hour of practice one puts into a craft. It's also a cop out for those making the comment to not work hard at what they want to be good at.
I know it's not that simple and of course some people are born naturally good at certain things, but nobody is born a master at anything. Rob might have had a natural affinity for the violin but he clearly has put in thousands and thousands of hours that he could have spent relaxing, watching TV, etc. that is an amazing work ethic.

ive been a professional artist since the age of ten, but ive always admired the violin and the saxophone. i played the saxophone for two years and then i switched to piano. i was always discouraged by my teachers when they told me to give up and i wasnt going to make it as an artist.. and since i never gave up i now own my own art store, i got my tattoo apprenticeship when i was 16, and im 19 now... im getting back into music, and im going to practice violin, and get back to playing the saxophone.. i admire people like you who live your dreams, and inspire others.
Musical skill usually runs in the family especially with some of us Koreans. My mom was a classical pianist and we were always surrounded by the greats from Beethoven down to Tchaikovsky. Thanks for sharing because it brought back memories but my hindsight never followed all the way through. Bravo Rob and you have a follower.

Rob thank you for posting this video! It truly helps me! I started playing the violin at 38(its my 3rd instrument after piano and flute) and even though its the most difficult I ever played its the most rewarding may be because I'm an adult now.
What you say about practice and sacrifice is totally true! It took me a year to learn to hold the bow properly and several oThers to train my left fingers to fall right where they're supposed too! I play every year at recitals but this last one I was able to play my first concerto piece and enjoy it! That day something happened and I felt like an invisible glass ceiling broke and gave me such a boost that I'm confident now I can play anything if I practice and try hard! I believe I can do it! I just turned 52 and I'm enjoying playing more than ever.I've had awesome teachers but the one I have now has helped me and encouraged me so much that I keep on pressing on! Rob you've encouraged me with this video! I wish I was younger but...thank God I can play at 52! God bless you!!!

I always loved Nigel Kennedy's Largo best, but if you do it, I'd totally buy it! I've heard several Spigels, but only one of them made my spine tingle, the others were just fab. I'm desperate to gear it played that we'll again. It was on a classical channel on the radio and I didn't catch who it was. I LOVE your playing and just sent it to my husband and sisters :)

I am a violin amateur, I was really touched when the Laro's Symphonie espagnole sounded, for it is a song of ten level examination in China and I played it at the same age. In China, so many kids have to practice instrument (forced by their parents) every day, only a few children really like it, and most of them give up for the heavy school work during the middle scholl. I am lucky for I didn't give up, well it's painful for my childhood, but it worth at last. Thanks Rob for your great video!

Its the same for me with my UA-cam channel, I started making really shitty videos a few years ago, and as I grew and got more support I was encouraged to put more and more effort into it, and today I dare say my videos are pretty good. I chose to keep my old shitty videos up because it shows how the quality evolved over time.
My name is also Robert. I'm 14 and have been playing trombone for 3 years. I have excelled so much because of my passion for music, and the freedom it gives me, to create, to lift myself and others, to create utter beauty from a mouthpiece and a hunk of beautiful metal. I aspire to play trombone and teach music. I am hoping to make all state as a freshman, (huge deal in Texas) stories like this inspire me to much. People have often told me I can't do things ok trombone because of my age and one of the reasons why I have taken off so fast is because I strive to show others that I can. To prove to myself and those around me that my age has little to do with my ability. I practice for about 3 hours a day. I get up at 5:45 and get to my school at 6:30 every morning and play from 6:30 until 7:45 or 8. I don't eat lunch so I can practice. I spend some nights until midnight practicing. I love it so much. I am choking for several hours per day. I have a severe LPR and no money to resolve it. But i am not jealous of anyone. Such stories of people doing what they are passionate about, prevents me from commiting suicide. I hope one day there will be an easy cure for this disease from hell.

Joan D'Arc Thanks for your attention. I live in Slovenia. ( small country between Hungary and Italy, 2 millions inhabitants). Health system sucks here. Politicians steal money from 'health bag', sorry,dont know the other word. Doctors said i am faking and overreacting, while i have visibly swollen everything from nose to chest, and i scare people when i show my throat( it is not contagious cause it is not virus or bacteria, but failed muscles of esophagus).

Kaylee Gunderson Thanks. I know already all that, have been reading articles for five years desperately trying to find an answer. But it isnt acid that is culprit in lpr, it is more enzyme pepsin that inflammes everything on it's way from nose to chest. Antacids and proton pump inhibitors dont work for me. It helps people with heartburn only. I need a surgery.

I spend SOOO much time on gymnastics. I am a xcel silver gymnast, and I practice 8 hours s week. I also “do” cello, but i did it for strings class at school, so I rented a cello and now I returned it and am waiting to grow up so I can get my own full sized cello! I LOVE your work, Rob. Keep it up!

My 2 passions in life is music and art. In a way they kind of go hand in hand, I believe music is audible art or art for the ears. I started playing the flute when I was 10 I am now in college (they don't have a band or an orchestra) and I still come home every weekend to play with my hometown's pep band. I also taught myself how to play various flutes that I find (mainly piccolo, Indian flute and Chinese flute) and I am learning how to play the ukulele. I also would love to learn how to play the piano but I don't have much time with school and all. Now for the other passion, art, I started drawing just like everyone else, until about 1st grade. We had an assignment where we had to draw a tree. When I got it back I brought it home and proudly showed it to my mother. (she is a very good artist herself) When she pointed out all the different animals I drew I knew I needed to keep going. Now 13 years later I am able to life like drawings and paintings of people and animals. Now I'm going to school for something way off.... Veterinary technology...basically a veterinary nurse. I know weird but I have always loved animals.
Hi Rob I got emotional to watch this video, it reminds me when I started to play violin for the first time, I was watching a TV program where a kid was playing violin and I got fascinated straight away and I told my mother that I had to play violin. I started at 7 and played for 5 years, then I stopped, when my mother died my teacher sent me a letter where he said that If I wanted he could have given to me free lessons, I did it for 1 year then stopped again. Now, after 6 years I'm playing again practicing at least 3 hours a day with a teacher and I really would like to become good enough to live with music. What u said at the end of the video it's true, talent without dedication and sacrifice it's nothing.

Rob, I’m currently a first year college student studying business. Been playing violin for about 12 years, but was thinking about dropping the violin because of my business studies. I recently decided to start releasing covers on UA-cam as a way for me to not lose my passion for the instrument. I discovered you by chance as your Ted talk showed up on my recommended list. Was never so moved by a Ted Talk. Not sure if you’re gonna see this comment, but I just wanted you to know that your Ted presentation and this video, have really reignited a passion in me. I am from Africa, I have been training really hard and sacrificing my blood sweat and tears for the on thing I love, running. I started when I was 3 and my dad would take me outside everyday to train me, my dad was in the Olympics and now so am I, I am Usain Bolt.

Thank you for this video, not often we get to see what it actually takes to get to a level that can be considered a success. It is a great reminder of the less popular side of it, the hard work and probably more important the consistency involved. Honestly, my blessing/curse has always been the fact that my interests have waned, wavered and varied over the years. I do not prefer to maintain a focus on a single aspect of a given undertaking, but rather a wide variety of activities from drumming - 20 years, weight training - 45 years, various sports from baseball, hockey, tennis, golf, martial arts, rollerblading, etc. I've been writing poetry since 1998 and have a book of poetry written. So, while I am master of nuttin, I am very much a hack of multiple trades. What I miss most - drums. Been years since I've played, but do plan to play again. Thank, Rob.

It is quite time consuming. Especially starting fresh. If you got yourself an instrument and at least one lesson a week, though (45-60 min lessons) I think it's possible. At least you already got down reading music, rhythms, and that type of stuff! If it's something you wanna so, go for it! I've played for 13 years and I couldn't be happier!
I think you should do it. I recently took up guitar after playing piano for the past 3 years and I find the process is much smoother and genuinely feels easier after already playing one instrument. you should defo go for it
I've been playing violin for 6 years now (I'm 12) and I think this inspires me to try better at it. I haven't enjoyed it much until now, but I'd like to put more into, and find out what I like to play.
One tip from me.
Never ever think that you practiced enough.
I used to practice about 1-2 hours a day on violin when i was in middle school.
Now after practicing even 4 hours i know, how little i did and i just want next day to come to start doing the rest. And the same thing every day ;)
And never practice too much.
Perlman, the best of the best says that 5 hours a day is enough.

I would like to say as of recent personal events I stopped trying to learn the guitar. I had only been a few months in untill my reason to play became a threat to my sanity, my dad. Now I won't go into detail but I think I could pick up that guitar again. And maybe just maybe get good at it.

I've started to play violin with 5 years, and continued it until I was 14. Then I stopped it, because I had some troubles to achieve my education/grades. And after 25 years I started again to play the violin. At the moment I'm not even close to the level where I was when I stopped, but I'm now making good progress with usually playing about 2h per day. And your videos, and also those from 2set Violin are keeping me motivated. Thank you!

First, I found you because my 6 year old has begged my for year to get her a violin, she just started her lessons. I wanted to learn more about the violin so here I am on your channel. As for my passion, it is woodworking both in fine furniture and in turning. I am usually out in the shop from 10 PM till about 4 AM nightly. Still work a full time and part time job. My goal is full time in the craft. My daughter and I have been going through all your videos. She loves your noob, pro videos.
