With the Pimax, the motion is much smoother when you set Render Quality 2 and SteamVR settings to 20 to 25% with no apparent loss of quality. I agree with you though that the G2 with OpenXR is straight off better than SteamVR. I also agree that the G2 is easy to pop on and off, it's lighter and easier more comfortable but that's still a work in progress for me to find the comfort options. Studioform out of stock with the P8KX weights so arranging something temporary for now.
I'm not fussed about the audio in either as I prefer the external speakers with subwoofer. My daughter complains that I make too much noise. I point out that she's old enough to leave home.

I have to say it's with a bit of relief that I'm glad to hear your choice is the Reverb G2 when it comes to msfs 2020 since that is what I recently purchased.

Interesting comment about AMD systems and CTD. I’m running a Ryzen 9 5900x , previously ran a Ryzen 1700x. In the early days of the sim I had regular CTD.
But I’ve not experienced a CTD for a long time now. Are you sure it’s MSFS causing the problem?
Reason I’m bringing this up is that my primary screen is an LG OLED C9. If I’m flying in VR, I turn the screen to a tv channel. The reason for this, if I turn the TV off, when it turns back on (HDMi re initialised) it crashes MSFS to the desktop. I reported this quite some time ago, unsure if it’s a HP or MSFS problem. As a work around I always do the above and have not had that issue since.
Thank you for your look at the pimax, interesting to hear how the sweet spot is so much better than the G2, one of its initial let downs. It sounds promising, but
I think the problem with VR headsets is that the resolution is getting to far ahead of the GPU.
Unless you have the highest end GPU you are going to struggle to get decent results from a 4K headset, especially on a weaker machine, let alone looking at 8K.
I’d rather VR manufacturers (Valve, HP, HTC, Oculus) sort the lenses out, with a sweet spot that covers the entire headset, with a realistic FOV, than chasing higher resolutions that out of the reach of most people.
Worth pointing out, as GPU get better so will the 4K VR headsets as there not being maxed out yet.

Thanks for the great, thoughtful, detailed comparison. I just couldn't pull the trigger on the Pimax. Having the 5K, and STILL cannot get it to stay connected to the base stations (i pulled it out last week just out of curiosity and tried it out all over again), I just did not want to get burned again by their system. I LOVE my G2, and while I DO really want a larger field of view and LESS GLARE (ugh...that glare), and more freedom to adjust the IPD (so limited with the G2) and a larger sweet spot, I didn't want to chance having all the problems I suffered with my 5K. Hi....
I have been following your videos of your your use and opinion of the pimax vision 8k x VR headset. I really enjoyed them and learned a great deal. I am unfamiliar with some of the terminally.
I have been holding out on buying my first VR headset until the quality of the image is better. My TV is a 4K, 65 inch, LG OLED TV and I have surround sound. I can stream (in 4K) movies from Disney +, Netflix and Amazon Prime. None of the 4K streaming services can come close to the quality of a 4K Ultra Blu-ray DVD.
Do you think any headset available can come close to the quality of a modern OLED 4K TV and a 4K ultra blu-ray DVD?
Can I take the pimax vision 8k x VR headset and plug it into either a 4K Ultra blu-ray DVD player, or a TV, and watch a 4K Ultra Blu-ray DVD movie on the headset?
In 4K, what is your refresh rate in Hz of the pimax vision 8k?
Other than Second Life and Sansar, I am not much into games. Sansar is built for VR.
    Any thoughts on the above?
Thank you for your time. I sure enjoy your videos.
    all the best,

The 8kx is still the winner to me as was noted it's best with virtually all sims other than msfs2020 only (and I think you only mean performance wise, not immersion wise) and only due to asobo and nothing to do with the 8kx itself (which says a lot) and the 8kx is future proofed for some time into the future and will be optimized for msfs20 soon enough (but can still run it now on the 8kx, just maybe with fixed foveated rendering or a narrower fov to improve performance, until it's optimized) and at that time when it's optimized I'm sure you'll be craving the 8kx fov and sweet spot again and with time with sim and game software optimization (like the integration of vulkan, dlss, vrss etc) and better hardware we can get more and more performance out of it over time, not needing to upgrade the headset for quite some time.. we won't be able to make the G2 fov wider over time (& so it's lifespan is much less than the 8kx) and maybe another headset will come out to match the 8kx but why wait and buy multiple headsets between now and that theoretical future point in time when the 8kx already does it all now and for less cost than getting multiple headsets to meet different needs and much less cost than the commercially based xtal and Varjo hmds. The vive pro 2 is basically similar clarity to the 8kx but a narrower fov and so not worth it to me and the wireless option is pointless with the vp2 as it only works at reduced resolution and clarity.. If it ran wirelessly at the full tethered resolution, that would be more appealing for room scale but not needed for sims anyway.. The 8kx audio is instantly fixed by just using a decent pair of headphones and the dmas will be out in the next few months and that will match or surpass the audio of the G2 and index (as it too will be suspended speakers)

I play DCS, IL2, and MSFS. I really considered the Pimax. But I already spent the money on the G2. Outside the sweet spot (which I can live with) I am super happy with the G2. Oh and I use Steam VR and mixed reality. Not sure how the Pimax works within Windows Mixed Reality.

    • @VRFlightSimGuy

Pimax works with the Windows Mixed Reality for Steam VR interface or just the Steam VR app, just like any other headset. Open XR just need to know the path but won't do anything else, since all the settings are done in the Pi Tool or Steam's side. The Pimax has REALLY impressed me and I continue to tweak the headset in MSFS for which I'm getting better results all the time now. Thanks for watching!

I'm pleased that you ultimately decided on the G2...it was the one I was intending to stick with (for my MSFS needs), so it's good news that the G2 is still top of your MSFS list!
Can I also just ask, did you also decide that you are going to stick with nVidia driver 466.63 over everyone's favourite long term 457.30? I hadn't "upgraded" to 466.63 just yet, as I wanted to make sure that after a couple of weeks it didn't introduce any strange anomalies, but so far, there has been little additional comment about it, so that's either good or bad, I can't tell...
But, after 2+ weeks of use, if you are still using 466.63, then it must be a keeper, I'd say!
Thanks for the G2/Pimax comparison...no doubt saved me a ton of cash! LOL

CTD reason is found om my AMD system. It's the AMD GPU driver that is causing it. Nothing else once you have bios update AGESA 1.2.0.2 or now for some that have the absolute latest AGESA 1.2.0.3. solving the USB issue. Also a good big amp powered USB 3.0 Gen 1 hub is needed for the G2. We AMD GPU people need a MSFS / VR oprimized driver and the only one so far that works is the one that comes with Windows 10 Update "Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. - Display - 27.20.1034.6" from 21-08-2020. AMD tickets are still open without any answer if the newer and better performing drivers will ever sort out these CTD's. My GPU upgrade to AMD 6900 XT or Nvidia RTX 3090 will be decided on driver support.

I don´t see in your videos that your view goes black and freezes for a few seconds every now and then. Is it because you only get that in the G2 view or have you managed to get rid of that distraction when flying? I´ve gor a G2 and a pretty new PC with good graphics but sometimes the sim just freezes, and then it keeps going. Very irritating. Also, like Sven, I run a (brand new) AMD system with the 6800 X (16GB) videocard, 9 core cpu, 32 GB ram and M2 SSD. Let me tell you, I could not start MS flightsim 2020 at all before AMD released an updated videodriver. It surprises me because I reasoned that because Microsoft will release the sim on the Xbox Series X, which is also AMD-hardware, I just asumed it would work like a charm. Aerofly FS have very high framerate but suffer from some vierd sturrering every now and then. DCS seem to work perfectly not to mention IL-2. My old 8770K i7 system with 32 GB and the nvidia 1080 never had any issues apart from low framerate after I started using my G2-headset. I had ordered a nvidia 3080 but gave up on it after waiting for 5 months. I decided to go for a new PC with AMD through and through. I works great i HL ALyx and Skyrim VR and Cyberpunk etc. But I have a lot of issues with MS flightsim and Aerofly FS which was rather unexpected.
