    SCSI2SD is good to replace SCSI drives with and it can even emulate the "quirks" of apple SCSI drives.
    Ubuntu reads and writes HFS drives fine.

      Can confirm that SCSI2SD is amazing. I have two for my Power Mac 8600 and Quadra 700. While it is pricey, it would be even more expensive and risky to get a mechanical SCSI of the equivalent drive size.

    SCSI drives need to be manually assigned IDs via a series of pins that are usually on the bottom or back of the drive, and they require a "terminator" device at the end of the SCSI cable. Especially if you're using multiple devices on one chain.
    Failing to terminate the SCSI bus can result in all sorts of weird behavior, as without termination the signals running over the cable can actually reflect back at the end of it and cause interference. This can cause anything from drives simply not showing up, to full on system instability or failure to boot.

    • @HaveYouTriedGuillotines
      @HaveYouTriedGuillotines 4 роки тому +1

      ...Judging by what's listed on the other SCSI bus, your problem is that both of your hard drives are assigned ID 0. Which means you don't have any jumpers on any of them. Terminating the very last row of pins with a jumper _should_ put the drive on ID 1 instead, which would solve the problem.

      This post is the one I was looking for before I weighed in… I used Macs in the 90’s and getting the SCSI IDs sorted correctly was a pain.
      Also getting them in the right position on the chain was a pain.
      If you change the ID on the one you cannot see and still cannot see it, change the ID back to what it was and change the ID on the one you can see how.
      It’s a black art…

    I'm sure someone has already mentioned SCSI has 0-7 for IDs. Each device ID must be unique. Jumpers are usually next to the connectors. Also SCSI termination may need be set.
    Also, I have a drive which must be manually mounted. I still have FWB HardDisk Toolkit installed, which I use to mount and unmount.

    Are you familiar with SCSI IDs and how they work? It doesn't matter if you have a CD-ROM and a hard drive on the same cable, but it will matter very much if you have conflicting SCSI IDs. Those are set by jumpers on the drive, kind of like how you set master, slave or cable select on IDE and ATAPI drives.

    Also, something that you might wanna be aware of regarding SSDs, data stored in flash memory degrades over time when unpowered, cheap NAND can start to lose its data after as little as 2 years unpowered. Personally I'd keep a copy of it all on modern hard drive as well for more long term storage. Or if you have an old LTO drive or something similar it might be a good use for it, would be very overkill but oh well.

    instead of risking old mac hardware rescuing drives I would suggest dumpster diving an old PC and a dirt cheap scsi card, then using linux and ddrescue to clone the drive to an image file, then copying the contents out of the image using an emulator like sheepshaver or basilisk - ddrescue is great because it has lots of control over how long it should try to read the data, it uses a strategy where it reads the easiest data first then goes back to bad sectors and tries a bunch more times to get the missing data
