I remember the winter of 62/63. Walking to school in 10 foot snowdrifts with no shoes on, having to break the ice on the outside toilets and if we were a minute late we would be flogged to within an inch of our lives. But were we unhappy? Too right we were.

I have nothing but warm memories of 63, apart from the times when one of my sisters took the heavy overcoat from me during the cold nights.

When political studies are produced there is little mention of the legacy of the 1955 63 Macmillan government. They built vast new towns like Milton Keynes and Kirkby where people enjoyed inside toilets and bathrooms in contrast to the old inner city properties that had neither. Gardens and cleaner air improved quality of life. The housing model of "Parker Morris£ design was a great success.
That government also built the first new comprehensive schools in the UK that had swimming pools, and academic and technical classrooms. 11- 18 school years
Hire purchase was introduced for the first time that opened up every household need being met by weekly payment to stores and shops.
Later Harold Wilson would bring in the Health and Safety Act and employment protection act that created the ACAS service and industrial Tribunal services used today. What would these good men make of the UK today ?
