- "The rest are doo-doo!" Coming off his victory at the 1996 ITF World Championship, Total Eclipse (Keith Bailey) wrecks shop at the 1997 DMC American Final, Club Vinyl, NYC, April 15th. Bailey was one of the heavy favorites going into the competition (along with East Coast champ DJ Craze), but finished runner-up to DJ Slyce, who came from nowhere to grab the title.
Finally! Someone has put up one of the greatest sets of all time.
the tribe called quest routine is a thing of beauty
No doubt, but I still think Craze would've taken the title if he hadn't had that problem with the needle. Maybe things worked out for the best, because if Craze had won, he would've beaten A-Trak at the World Final, and A-Trak may not have returned to the battle again, in '98, which means he may never have joined the Allies, etc, etc. It's like something from 'Back to the Future'!
@@MichaelShum Word! Someone uploaded it a long time ago and it got taken down for some reason. Glad to see it again. That AWB/Funky President and Lyn Collins routines were sick...
Possibly the greatest juggler ever.
In my opinion, he probably would’ve won had he showcased his scratching more. Crab scratching was the new fad at the time and every championship routine had it then. Kind of like with vert skate comps of the later 80’s, where you wouldn’t stand a chance if you didn’t do a McTwist. But anyway, Slyce showcased dope juggling and crab scratching. So I’d imagine the judges viewed him as the more complete DJ. I believe this would be a recurring thing in the world final as well. In my opinion, DJ Akakabe was by far the most skilled DJ. Yet he didn’t even place in the top three. Most likely because he had no scratch solo whatsoever. However, the top three DJs all did tons of scratching. Most notably the winner (A-trak) who went heavy on…you guessed it, crab scratching. 🤷🏻♂️
nice contextual analysis ! crab was king at that time and q was one of the judges at the worlds - having said that slyce didn’t do well in the world battle (7th)
I've watched many scratch battles, know the skill, know the score and all I can say is, WOW THIS IS TRUE MASTERSHIP OF TURNTABLEISM!!
This must be one of the all time greatest sets
One of the best sets EVER!!!
Total eclipse is a championship. Congratulations great dj turntablist. Number one. The best dj.
I can't beleive I hadn't seen this before.
I’ll always love that one woman yelling “BE QUIET” throughout the entire set hahahaha I’m assume it was a lady friend who didn’t want the crowd messing E’s concentration
There was a woman there? Usually these events are straight sausage fests lol.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. First time I've seen this since I lost my VHS copy. Can't believe nobody uploaded until now.
my favourite all time set, thanks Michael
You're welcome! Thanks for watching :)
+Michael Shum , made my day thank you
I wish he would have won in this night, but Billie Jean took it.
That Scenario... whew!
my best set of all time, my best dj of all time
I was there that night...great memories of that U.S. Finals
floydc1 this 97 USA dmc was the pinnacle for me. Watched that tape so many times.
JBLAZE999 earlier that day was my first time competing in DMC. GM Roc Raida was the one who convinced me to come back that night to watch the finals.
floydc1 great, so you were in the daytime semis? Your dj name?
My name at the time was DJ Brother Floyd...but in 98 it became and remained DJ Wah-Heed.
Floyd Aaron thanks. Bet the atmosphere was great that night. You can sense it in the crowd noise.
The trick at 3:14 can be dated all the way back to cash moneys 1988 dmc eliminations set when he used "Im Bad" by LL Cool J, where he spun around, and perfectly timed it to where he would stop and land on the beginning of the track, Pretty soon, Miz would pick up on this and use it in his dmc sets the next year with Steady B's "let the hustlers play" and obviously with cash being one of miz's biggest influences, he followed in his tracks. philly aside, this trick was done by a battle DJ from the bronx dubbed "ekim" in the 1990 northeast regionals, 1 year later the trick was then used by multiple members of a group called the "xmen" with Sean C, Rob Swift, Roc raida (RIP) and Mista Sinista doing their own versions of the trick while still having the same concept.

great post!
@@MichaelShum Thank you :)
i might make a compilation video of all these...
Total eclipse in the galery of the best dj all time. Peace.
5:09 is one of my favourite turntablism moments! Amazing.
love that
New York!
This part is bananas.
No way Slyce should of won dat! C O N SPIRACY!!
His Billie Jean juggle, I think, did it for him. That and his Dance to the Drummer's Beat.
Glad I wasn't a judge. Tough decision.
Total Eclipse set was dope but was sloppy as well. Slices was more smooth and did way more body tricks
One thumbs down= 1 very jealous DJ
Unbelievable
thx Michael
nothing leaves this guy unrecommented
Think I've liked all your vids, loads of classics how do you have such an archive?
yes siiiirrr my man
2:27 I love this one. It's on the executioners album. When I heard it the first time I thought it was made by 2 people.
4:12 is so dope
It’s not hard to understand why the X-Men put this dude on🤷🏾♂️
Well Alrighty 💪🏿. X-Men
👑
No fucking clue how A-Trak won this year with Total Eclipse on this crazy set.
this was the american final which slyce won -- a-trak won the worlds
Great
Scenario fucking sick 🔥
Vinyl, right?
DJ slyce must have been friends with the judges...
WizzyDoes Dallas he actually was pretty much totally unknown-no crew, no rep-eclipse and craze were the known favorites-slyce’s win is similar to how baby g came out of nowhere to win the 1990 battle when everyone was thinking steve dee or plazticman were gonna win it
My man don’t even look like he be trying!
Michael, you don't happen to have the set he did on one of the Piklz videos (very late 1990s/early 2ks) where he did this fantastic routine with the Biggie track 'Who shot ya'?
I'll try to find this one
Was that in Italy? I remember he and Q performed there together. I've still got every TTV VHS tape. I was a real scratch nerd back in the late '90s!
Maybe!! Upload it and we'll soon know!! Hail to the late 90s scratch nerds! (I was one of them!)
Did you battle? I battled, on and off, from '97 to '03. I should've really been on the '99 UK DMC Final tape, but was well and truly robbed by the judges at one of the UK heats that year.
J-Boogie Brown I did battle sporadically. Did the 2000 Birmingham DMC regionals. It was a farce, and the DMC lot turned up hours late, were rude and dismissive but it was a laugh. I was well oiled by the time I went on. I met DJ Quest there who won the nationals in 2003. I got him a few gigs off the back of it. I was more interested in doing local stuff and running my night, but battling was good. I used to know everyone back then, Perverts, Gimps, they all played at my monthly. Halcyon days!
What's that Public Enemy song he juggles at the start of his routine?
At last I've found it, I knew it had to be a remix as you can still hear the bassline.
ua-cam.com/video/cgbb-D4rMfI/v-deo.html
Lyn Collins juggle dope!
❤
My dude don’t even seem like he be trying.
#Classic
What P.E./Chuck D song is that he starts with?!!!
brothers gonna work it out remix by PE
Where did eclipse place?
2nd place- slyce won, craze was 3rd
3:27 =shit goes for him
anyone know the first song in this set?
that's Chuck D's voice for sure of Public Enemy
brothers gonna work it out (remix) by PE
@@MichaelShum daaaamn! i knew the lyrics of the song, i even checked the "Fear of a Black Planet" album, but couldn't find that part, i'm kinda enlightened now, thank Michael : )
Matter of fact he's using Raida style
But far more advanced.
@@ChesterPerry187 Man! Raida taught him dat shit. He got his fingers just like Raida have them on the record. Raida was the master of that click. They'll tell you dat shit.
Dear lawd 🙊
how did Slyce beat this?
i think the billie jean routine won it for slyce that night--in retrospect, craze probably should've taken tis one
Michael Shum Had his needle not skipped on the "If I Ruled the World" part of his routine, he might've won the world title 4 times in a row
To be fair, the competition was so crazy and close for DMC 1997. I remember watching my VHS tape for the first time and I thought Total Eclipse was gonna win, but then Slyce did that Billy Jean routine. I've never seen or heard a beat juggle like that, off of a Michael Jackson song, no less. You can even hear everyone in the audience gasping and someone shouting "who's fucking with that?" after he finishes the juggle. The wow factor of that funky beat juggle was too much. And don't get me wrong, Craze also destroyed that year. To me, 1997 was the best year for DMC DJ Battles. Craze, Total, Slyce, Shortkut, Mysterio, it's too much. The funk and showmanship is what I really miss about DJ Battles nowadays.
@@MockeryManor True indeed! But when Slyce came to Italy for the World Final, along came a 15-year old named A-Trak who stole the show. Man, I wish I still had that VHS! It was one of my all-time favorites!
Murder🙏 mighty X-men
He's in no way better than Roc Raida. And ysll know that.
