Really glad that the Percussion Concerto got mentioned , it’s a wonderful piece and actually great to her the drum cadenza played on the stainless steel kit . Only studio recording of it solo as such . The hi toms sound fantastic . Would love to hear him on an octaplus kit again

ELP were one of my favourite ever bands . Each member was an integral part of this band and great Carl is carrying it on

Great video yet again, except they are getting even better and better. Your enthusiasm is a real tonic in this troubled world and rubs off on those who listen. I ony scraped the surface of ELP back in the 70s, I am now ready to fully appreciate them, as your very pertinent comment that we weren't really ready for them back then.

Great, infectiously enthusiastic, review ... the book idea is a great approach ... package looks cool and looks to be pitched at a sensible price ... will definitely check out the concerto .... saw Carl Palmer as trio at Lemon Tree in Aberdeen about 15 years ago ... took (forced!) my drum playing son to come along .... needless to say he was impressed (ditto when I took him to see Steely Dan with Keith Carlock on drums) .... at one point Carl was doing his drum theatrics and one of his sticks fell off the stage ... I picked it up, gave it to my son, who then got it signed by Carl at the end of the gig ... a great night. Cool video again .... CMcG, Aberdeen, Scotland

P.S. just realised that I already have a copy of the concerto! ... it's on the 2 CD "Do You Wanna Play" compilation which, if memory serves, was bought at the Lemon Tree gig .... it's so much more than an outtake ....

I must admit that having all the other ELP boxed sets, I am in two minds about this one.
The large book is nice but at most adds about a tenner to the cost of the box set - meaning I would still be paying more than fifty quid for 4 discs, 3 CDs of which contain tracks that mostly seem to be available elsewhere (including in my collection already).
The Keith Emerson and Greg Lake sets were full remastered albums with extra tracks, they give me pretty much all of the solo material by both artists - and I could then go and explore albums by The Nice or King Crimson independently, given I already have all of the ELP stuff several times over.
Carl Palmer has done five solo albums since 2002 - I don't own any of them and would have snapped up this set if it contained those.
But expecting me to "re-buy" half of the first Asia album again as part of this compilation? And that in a boxed set aimed at true ELP fans who probably have all of the "popular" albums that these three guys played on anyway?
The other compilations were excellent, I absolutely treasure the "Fanfare" box set which was about double the cost of this for at least four or five times the amount of content.
So feeling a bit disappointed with it at the moment, they could have made it a lot more interesting for the money.

Thanks for all the ELP content including this box set. Have Fanfare and the Live boxes. Will check this out. Agree that the band is being appreciated now. Loved them since their 70s heyday. They should be in the hall of fame. Bumper stickers should be issued! Peace, love and music.

The Hall of Fame is a joke, believe me. They had plenty of time to induct ELP but they never did. Now I think the best HoF ELP have are us, their fans.

Great review Phil - loved ELP, and saw them in concert at the Manchester Free Trade Hall very early on. Sadly a lot of my friends and many others put them down as over the top, pompous dinosaur's. Unfortunately they just didnt get it. As you say these guys were all brilliant musicians - not much more to say really. One of my fav moments is the video of them doing Fanfare, in the Olympic stadium in Canada - in the snow. Outstanding band. Cya Doug

I really appreciate your enthusiasm for all things ELP. I listened to the deluxe edition of Pictures at an Exhibition yesterday and I heard the recording of the alternate show they did. Keith and Carl's playing is off the charts. It is almost impossible to believe that musicians could play at that level for such an extended time. I actually appreciate their musicianship more now than I did back in the 70's.

On April 12, I have mine already pre-ordered. As a long time ELP and Cozy Powell fan, and with the due respect Carl Palmer deserves, I think ELPowell were an amazing lineup.

Do ELP have an equal? Classical music played in a new way that still hasn't been replicated. If there is another band like them, I am struggling to think of one.

Would it have been appreciated if Keith Emerson's autobiography 'Pictures of an Exhibitionist' had been included with the boxed set of his career? It is well out of print ,and paperback copies sell for £90. Hardback copies sell for over £500.....

Perhaps I would buy the book when send separately. The rest of the music, with the exception of the percussion concerto (which I would love to listen to), I've heard it all.
Great unboxing, but I am not really interested in this. Just the book.

ELP never get the gravitas that Genesis, Yes and King Crimson get and it’s completely undeserved . I’m hoping soon they can get some more interest from the average rock fan to see how brilliant their work was. I was lucky to see them 3 times, twice in 1992 at the Royal Albert Hall and at their farewell gig at the High Voltage concert . Also saw Greg 4 times , at the Reading festival 1981 with Gary Moore, twice in 2007 and once in 2010 and I met Greg, such a nice humble guy too !

My experience was completely different - back in the early to mid 1970's my best mate's older brothers had a fantastic LP collection that included both "Trilogy" and "Brain Salad Surgery" but nothing by any of the other bands. Plus another mate of mine owned "Tarkus" as well. Therefore, of the four bands you mention (all of which I love now), ELP was the first one that I got into, and I've stuck with them ever since.
I too was at Reading Festival in 1981 and I was also at the High Voltage Festival 2010 where ELP played their reunion (and final) live concert - seeing ELP live was a "bucket list item" ticked for me.
I don't think ELP have ever been "undeserved", in the circles in which I have moved they have always been as respected as the other three bands. I guess it's just down to who and where you grew up I guess.
