Harbor Freight Jack Stand Recall got me thinking. I decided I don't want to use locking style Jack stands anymore. I'm going to be using ones from Esco instead.

I'm so glad you talked about a secondary/backup while using jack stands. I always leave a jack or jack stands somewhere but not under pressure just in case something slips. I'm also getting these as my primary set compared to the old style

I just learned about these today after putting in research. What a great design. Padding so no more bent pinch welds. Locking pin so no worries. Round feet so no digging into older concrete which is SUPER common. Very excited to order them. Noted they also come in 2 versions. 10498 (tall) 10499 (low profile). 👍🏾 cheers.

Thanks for watching. These are definitely a much better design I’ve been happy with mine.

    Nice stands mate
You cannot take any stand for granted no matter how well built.
I also have secondary blocks under my 3500kg landcruiser whenever I have the four wheels fully supported.
My mates think it is overkill and being scared but who will support my wife and kids when something goes wrong and I am but a memory.
    Good presentation mate!

I do the same thing for the same reasons. I do it by shoving the wheels under the car.

Yes, the Esco is better than the standard old design. But you said at 3:33, the Esco is using "the whole jack stand to hold your weight." Actually, it is using one pin to hold your car up from smashing you. Is that better than the toothed column with a locking pawl? Yes. I'm sure the Esco pin is hardened, yada, yada. That is, chinese hardened. I have no doubt the factory in china is NOT having their pins made in USA, Germany, or Japan. The fact that Esco chose to go with a single pin design is where they missed a chance to truly have a great stand. Had they just spaced the holes correctly, they could have gone with a double pin like other stands use (usually a U-shape), and they would have been golden. Just my opinion.

I bought 4 and the first thing I did was to spend 20 minutes removing all labels. Goo remover is needed to get any left over sticky stuff off. The stands look better without all the advertisements.

If you are leaving the jack under the vehicle after lifting it for added safety, something is wrong. That is the whole point of using jack stands. Never rely on the jack. So, just get 4 jack stands.

Harbor Freight has some ESCO copies that are top notch with excellent welds for less money, I bought a set for $99.

I just bought a pair of the low pro model. I had my jack stand slip off that tiny rear jack point on my 986 as I was lowering one side. It dented my undercarriage a little but and I was so pissed. Never again.

Hi, you have me worried now, I have the same jack stands, but they are not from Harbor Freight, I don't know what brand mine are. Have they all been recalled or is it just the Harbor Freight brand?

You focused on the old jack stand teeth. They aren't the problem. The problem is the catch mechanism which engages the teeth. It is held in place by a 2mm set screw. That's the issue.

Can't believe they weren't invented sooner.

I purchased the Sunex 22 ton Jack stands and they are really beefy. I don’t put saving a few dollars over losing my leg or losing my life.

The sunnex ones look beefy. I have some of their impact sets, good tools.

I still consider most jack stands of the harbor freight type to be designed incorrectly. Only a few make them correctly. Back in the day I worked strictly on cars on stands as a mechanic. And those were designed correctly. The others used pins. So basically, it's poor or improper design. Except the newer ones on recall due to bad welds. In most cases, stands do not have to be really expensive.

No they don’t have to be expensive. I just find these to be well put together and have a high capacity rating. If you’ve been working on cars long enough everyone has a story of a jackstand failure of some kind. I don’t think it will happen with these.

@@KevinsEuropeanGarage just a generic statement. Nothing wrong buying stands that make you feel safe. The stand I used were just standard stands back then. I suspect they were built correctly and made in the usa. There were cheaper ones out there but anyone with half a brain would see that they were a no go. And yes, I worked under cars for at least 20 years. Never saw a failure that I can remember. And yes, I prefer the pin type as the one you bought.

Of my 8 jack stands I now own, none of them are of the ratcheting type. All my jack stands have pins.

Beware of bargains on parachutes, toilet paper and jack stands. A $100 is well worth your life for sure.
