- From an almost a century old travelogue the Kali Chaudas firewalk festival in honour of Hindu godess Draupadi at the Sri Mariamman temple Chinatown. Hundreds of devotees participate spending days and nights in ritual purification. More than a thousand logs were placed in the pit. See also my clip on a Japanese firewalk festival.

Fascinating. I think our Hindu community is still celebrating this festival at the exact same location. For those including myself who only knew Singapore in the modern age, this was a real treat!
Exactly, our hindu community is still celebrating this festival here in Tamilnadu. This is called Theemidhi Thiruvizhaa (தீமிதி திருவிழா) in tamil. Seriously this video gives me goosebumps! ❤️
This video gives me goosebumps! I'm watching this video in 2021 January. This same exact celebration is happening in my town and nearby towns in Tamilnadu. I'm living in Sattur, Virudhunagar District in Tamilnadu near Madurai. We will call it as Theemidhi thiruvizhaa (தீமிதி திருவிழா). We do have these centuries old celebrations still now. Seriously your videos are treasure Sir. Thank you very much for sharing! ❤️
All of them performing this rituals are tamils settled in Singapore long back. I am from tamilnadu, we every year celebrate draubadi amman thiruvizha "Firewalk festival" during chitthirai (tamil month during april-may) in our village. It is a traditional festival of northern Tamilnadu. Thanks for posting this Michael
Thanks a lot Mr Michael. Good Job... Out Tamil culture documented by u... .. Thanks a lot... Behalf of All Tamil People around the World
The sound effects were post dubbed quite recently for there was no sound on film or tape recording in 1913. Talkies came about only in the late 1920's.
Thank you very much for bringing such a piece of important history back to Singapore !
That nadhaswaram in the beginning was beautiful.
It's been played till today for the same festival every year. It was composed in this very temple then.

This film was made on the obscure 9.5mm format, as evidenced by the central perforation holes. It took a very rich man to pursue the hobby of cinematography (as it was known in 1913) when a camera and projector could cost several year's normal wages. 9.5mm was soon replaced by 16mm in the 1920's for amateur and semipro cinematography. Then 8mm strictly for amateurs on account of its blurry quality.
Om Shakthi. SHE has been blessing us since then.
Thank you Michael Rogge Wonderful video . Memory and records of Singapore

Hi, great upload. Any information regarding the audio track? It was added to the original clip? And what and where is the recording from?
Singapour 2020 fire walk timidi festival
2019 we just had the annual fire walking at the same temple same location last week.
I doubt it was filmed in 1913. Probably more like in 1953 :) Anyway this video clip does have great historical value.
Dear Sir,
Thank you for an awesome video.I really appreciate your work. I would also like to inform you that the background music used for this video is from a recording by my brother back in 2006 using his camcorder during the festival. He is happy you used it! Thank you once again!
The ancient singaporeans never saw that their country had developed today.
At 1:54 time you may notice one live chicken was standing on the pilgrim's sampan.
Still practice nowadays ? Would be glad to attend.
Yes, Even today It is practiced in Tamilnadu. You can visit there..
You can witness this on Theemithi day in Singapore approximately 2 weeks before Deepavali. Check out Sri Mariamman Temple that has been organising this since 1840.
Mariamma koil means home of rain maa!.....no uncle nonsense!!!!😃😃😃😃
You must have been very young when you shot this Film?
It is not my film, but one of Pathé
It is certainly not 1913 . In 1913 , there was no portable movie camera with sound . I has to be during mid 1920s.
You do understand that the uploader can add sounds to his videos if he/she chooses to do so, right? So it's still very well possible that this footage is from 1913
Movies were made from as early as 1895. The sounds are added on in later years
@@2mikelim The first m movie to have sound was The Jazz Singer in 1928 (I think it was)
@@planetx1595 when you re - edit the film today, the editor can add in music and sounds.
Can someone please tell me which location is this in today's Singapore?
Chinatown
