We go home to take a break. Not to go to school OUT of school! All the teachers need to do is teach harder in class. We don't want to go home just to do more school.

When you bring homework home it helps you retain information or even learn. School is for learning and you cant learn something by looking at it once. I think kids should get 10 minutes of homework for each class rather than 1 hour each. Also I know this is 3 years late :))

So true, everything i get for homework we don’t even learn till the next day. What’s the point if we’re gonna learn it tomorrow? Plus we have no idea unless you already know the subject, most of the time people don’t.

Every single day so far I have gotten 6 hours or less of sleep because of homework. Now, if I didn't have a life and didn't have any extra curricular activities, this probably wouldn't happen. The problem is, I DO! I have more important things to do than to sit around and re-write an entire 5 page scene from a Shakespeare play in my own words (that actually did happen my English teacher literally had that as an assignment) It's like they don't understand that our lives don't revolve entirely around school. Teenagers should be getting, if I remember correctly, about 8 hours of sleep. Most of my friends (myself included) get around 5 hours of sleep on a regular basis because of all the hw. Most of us don't even know why we're doing it. It all just seems like busy work and most of the time it doesn't help us understand the subject better. We're like zombies at this point and it needs to stop.

Homework over the holidays is completely unnecessary. I can understand after school homework but it should only really be 30 minutes a day. Some people, like me, take a bit longer to do the work. The same essay that someone else can do in 1 hour might take another person 3. Homework over the holidays just completely defeats the purpose of a holiday. This includes assignments that also have a week or so during school. If you cannot remember something you learnt two weeks ago, how on earth are you meant to apply that to a scenario in two years? High school. Oh dear, high school. Unless you are going to pursue certain topics in your career, the majority of high school is also unnecessary. Primary school is certainly important but high school is just a bunch of knowledge that you will only put to use in trivial pursuit. I am going to be a singer and actor. I know I won't need to know Pythagoreas Theorem. I will most likely learn all the necessary information in university anyway. What is the point? We are over-educated, over-stressed and overworked.

These researchers looked at some interesting kids. 2 hours of homework for me was a luxury. 5-7 hours was more of the norm I dealt with, not counting projects, essays, and tests, and that only increased in university. Couple that with nonhyperactive ADD and just frustration with the system, no wonder I barely scraped by.

Better one for you. Go to bed really early, wake up several hours early, study. You don't have to sleep in between the study session and school, so you retain the most information.

  • @MAGWolf
    @MAGWolf 6 років тому +7

Waste of time. You will never retain half the info you get and more then likely you will purposely forget it because it was a burden you were forced to do in your free time. Trust me all my homework in High school was stupid I don't remember any of it since most my classes were 2 classes 4 hours each a day I never understood the concept of homework when teaches had plenty of time to teach within the time frame. Like a slap in the face here have more stuff to do on your free time. Real purpose of homework is so teachers can grade you based on that and do very little effort in the way of actually teaching and making class projects with the time they have interesting.

I used to be able to get out of school at 12:00 am every day. This is due to me being homeschooled by my parents.
However, for extra credits, my parents have put me in a public school program called Abeka.
The pro’s/con’s I have with it are as follows.
    1# The teachers.
Now, I do have some good teachers, and some mediocre teachers.
My Hebrew History teacher is amazing in the way he tells us the history, is incredibly fun to listen to, and barely gives us any homework. (He’s one of the only teachers I have straight A’s in.) Another great teacher is my speech teacher. She is incredibly fun, helps us understand the subject amazingly, and once again, gives little to no homework.
Now, my mediocre teachers are my English teacher (its easy to fall behind in his class if your attention wanders at the wrong moment) and my Algebra teacher.
My algebra teacher is the better of these two, as she is great at teaching the subject, and gives out a moderate amount of homework (30 min.)
However my English teacher gives out 1 1/2 hours of homework every day, which doesn’t help someone who struggles with English Grammar.
My “bad” teachers however have to be my science and geography teacher...
My science teacher gives out a moderate amount of homework (30 min to an hour), HOWEVER this is the only good thing about his class. To start, he teaches the lesson in a way that is different from the textbook he has us read each night. This makes it a confusing mess of flipping back and forth trying to piece information together. Secondly, he thinks of us as little memorizing machines. At first, he taught us some basics, such as the difference between accuracy and precision, different kinds of energy, etc. But, after the first test, he immediately LEAPED into topics like the many forms of carbon atoms, the different kinds of periodic elements, and molecular formations. I was left in the dust trying to grasp these loose subjects, and was studying from 5-7 pm to keep a grip on it.
The next bad teacher is my geography teacher. Her problem isn’t necessarily the homework (30 min), it’s how much memorization is required. The first 3 lessons of her class involved memorizing over *25 different items and phrases.* I haven’t gotten too far into her class as of yet, but so far, it doesn’t look good...
So for teachers, there are some good ones, however, with my speech class at an end, there is only one really good teacher and over 5 mediocre/bad ones.
    2# Homework. Con.
The average amount of homework I have per school day is 3+ hours (Which is already two times as large as the recommended amount for a 9th grade student). Combine this with half of that homework being useless busy work, and me having 6 hours worth of lessons every day, the final amount of time I have to spend in school a day (excluding studying) is 9+ hours a day.
To put that in perspective, if I wake up at 7:00 and start school at 8:00, I will finish at 6:30+ (This is including lunch break and studying)
This doesn’t seem like a lot, but when you consider that I have dinner at that time, which puts my finishing time at 7:00-7:30, I only have one and a half hours or less of free time a day. (The “less” part is due to me having to study extra in order to catch up with school)
Now, I don’t want to seem like a whiny baby. I know that there are schools out there that feel okay with giving students *5+ hours of homework,* however, that doesn’t make two time the recommended amount of homework okay.
School’s need to stop thinking more is better for learning, and they need to realize that we have a life as well.
As much as I hate the public school system, I know that I’m blessed to have any free time at all while a lot of other people are having their childhoods destroyed by school.

Honestly I like learning when my autonomy is given to me. If I want to learn about something, I won't care how long it takes to learn it because I WANT TO LEARN IT!
When there is any sort of pressure to learn something put on me, be it time, compulsion from others, etc., then I don't feel like I'm learning it for me. I'm learning it for the deadline or for the person or the assessment.
I feel like I'm not trusted by someone else to learn something if I'm tested on it just for the sake of testing me, you know... for "points".

When I was in high school, I would get home, eat something, and from 5PM to 2AM, I would do homework. I would fall asleep under the table (like George Costanza) and then wake up at 7 AM and get ready for school again. It was a awful and it repeated Monday through Thursday every week for four years. At least college is different, just tests and papers, but no homework or very little homework. It's a relief.

Homework makes you focus on only finishing it and not actually learning the subject.

  • @aoeu256
    @aoeu256 6 років тому +1

Explanations for why homework does not work:
1.) Unless the student believes that the homework is meaningful it can rob motivation from students for non-homework subjects. 2.) Overexposure to course material can make students lazy, reduce motivation, or not allow the sub-concious to process the information so it is inefficient
3.) Some students respond by staying up late, getting overly stressed, reducing exercise, or skipping meals: things that reduce general-intelligence
4.) Courses like Health, English, Psychology, History, Computer Literacy are often filled with "common-sense" knowledge: knowledge that can and is learned through other means (watching TV, talking to people, reading forums). Giving people homework on knowledge they already likely know is actually counter-productive (see points 1,2,3). Even worse the grade system encourages students to pick courses they are already good at rather than challenging students. [One time grades from tests can be replaced by a computerized Spaced Repetition System like anki, memrise. Also good online courses should be made that let students pick what they want to learn, but in a fine-grained manner]
5.) Math is often taught in a tedious way in school with lots of copying required to solve long algebraic equations. Maybe one day we can have a tablet version of matlab help us do the problems. Math can be improved by homework because it isn't common sense and its rigor and tediousness puts it beyond the means of normal socialization to learn. While it is true that engineers are more in demand than other professions, being forced into math can actually reduce motivation later on. Also guess who cares if people make 90,000$ per year vs 30,000$ per year? The government who need engineers for the economy, and gold diggers... The government should make math (and probably all other courses) voluntary, and they should make loans to students (even younger students) who do good at math as extra-motivation.
6.) The school ignores all non-school activities that can improve skills or intelligence... Things like learning a new skill like programming, socialization in an novel way, reading books, watching documentaries, looking up things you don't know on the internet, playing novel games, making friends with people of a different culture, meditation, exercise, and nutrition. Homework actually reduces the amount of time students have for these activities. Schools should figure out how to fire up students to improve themselves even if there is no immediate feedback.

I *hated* the ton of useless busy work in high school. It was such a relief when I finally went to university, where instead of piling on a ton of tedious, easy work, there was a much smaller amount of moderately challenging work, so it was a lot more fun. I wish that in high school, they'd focused less on memorization of disembodied facts and formulas and shown us some of the freaking awesome things we could do with seemingly concepts, like solve the Schrödinger equation of quantum physics using just basic math. I made part of a UA-cam series teaching that, because I eventually learned that it's not nearly as complicated as people make it out to be when you cut away all of the jargon and distill it down to its key parts. I should get back to it, but it might be a while. :P

most of us are visual learners like documentaries and informative videos... that's why we're here instead of watching Charlie bit my finger over and over. I think most people like knowledge and are naturally curious for facts and pondering...but the education systems are designed to reward those that can read and regurgitate them back on paper instead of how students being able to form their own ideas... not including math... this is why I skipped school a lot to smoke weed and chill at the public library... and I wasn't a "dork" I just couldn't focus and memorize things but exam times I was at least a "B" student. I don't think I'm alone on this...

I get like 10 hours each day lol.. (early college life go woosh..) luckily I can get it done in like 6.. still a long time. And the biggest reason in that the teachers don’t understand that each teacher can assign something. For example tonight I got assigned an English assignment (already have an essay due in 2 days), a whole 6 page packet of math, social studies definitions (but a whole bunch with a whole bunch of extra steps), a science assignment with multiple parts that are each due different days, a Japanese introduction video for the exchange students coming, and I still need to get a ride from school, eat, take a break or so, and sleep.. so I tend to spend 15-16 hours a day in my school work and the rest is sleep.. so yeah..

I'm a Senior at my university and I'm taking five classes, Monday through Friday. Each of my professors have assigned four papers at twelve pages each. However, they all also assigned papers that are thirty pages minimum as well as the readings and the outlines that go with the readings. Not counting the papers, I probably spend more than twenty hours on homework each week. Counting the papers, it's a lot more than that.

I could never do homework in school, but I still did well in the tests and reached my targets set in school.
But now I'm in uni, every tutor assigns loads of work each week, and not just the work in the module guides but to listen to podcasts and do extra reading too. And they all think their module is the most important so it's gotten to the point where I don't go to class just to do the work.
Oh, and they think I should quit my job, but if I do that, I won't have any money for food. It's like we're not allowed a life except to learn, but I'm the one paying them. If they paid me to study, I would happily quit my job and become a hermit to get my grades.

When I was in high school, I was so busy with a Varsity sport, clubs, and theater that I had almost no time to do homework let alone study. I would end up having to do it really late at night. Math was always the worst. Teachers would assign 10 of the same problem, and have around 7 or so different types of problems, which equates to 70 total questions. 2 is all you really need. 1st one to figure out, then a 2nd time to do it now knowing how to do it. Now in college, it's about 2 hours per class or more depending on the week which is reasonable since I have a whole week to do them.

Yeah, for me, the worst thing about homework in high school was that I was never told why it was important. For all of my classes bar math, the homework was way too simple and did not teach or help me learn anything that I could not do in class.

I like some teachers logics: We go in school 7 hours a day here in my school in sweden, we always get homework from: Swedish, english, spanish, art, math, and we have to finish it until the next week, and then they say: Why don't you ever go out with friends?? you have to be social to be able to consentrate.
me (in my head): well, that's easy when we have to spend "5 hours in total/week" to finish the homework, so we only have 3 hours left of the day before we actually can do what we want to, and that goes mostly to rest.
I'm a possetive great student, but I get mad at teachers who want their students to do more work than they have to, and that we are not allowed to do homework during classes where we've already finished the work..

It is absurd to have homework especially for kids and teens who don't want to study but if the child speaks up he/she will be shamed or yelled at by their parents. It is no wonder why teenagers have so much problems, it is because most of their lives they have been pressured to do something they did not want to but felt powerless to change anything.

UPDATE: Homework actually IS deadly! Most parents are around 30 to 40 years of age. They get angry from homework which means they get a higher chance or stroke and heart attack. Best to ask for the easy/fun sheets.

I just thought that changing the place where you study is a personal prefrence, it's quite cool that that has scientific backing. Personally, I feel like my homework is getting in the way of my revision. The homework the teacher sets may not actually help me whereas I know myself and my revision tactic so it's better for me to revise than do homework.

When it comes to learning, I learn best from doing, not from being told. Though part of that may be due to my auditory language recognition skills are pretty terrible. I'll be listening to someone talk and then blank out, or if two (or more) people talk at the same time all I hear is the adults from Peanuts.
