And the NFL, in an extremely controversial ruling, immediately said no, and threatened to punish Faulk significantly if he did anything to honor Payton. This is the story behind the bizarre controversy

Born in 1971, some of my earliest memories of memorable NFL play were highlights of Walter Payton runs and TDs. Although I wasn't a Bears' fan, per se, I definitely was a Walter Payton fan, and when the news broke re. his death (I believe it was via Sports Center, or some other ESPN program that I first heard it), it literally knocked the wind out of me like a full-on punch to the solar plexus, and thinking back to that moment while composing this comment, I'm fighting back a flood of tears almost like I'm reliving the experience all over again even though it's been more than twenty years -- that's how much the loss of Walter Payton, the person more than the player (but the latter descriptor is important, too) impacted me then and continues to impact me all these years later.

No surprise here; in 2002, the NFL wouldn't let Peyton Manning wear black high tops to honor Johnny Unitas after the all-time great passed, because Peyton placed in Indianapolis and not Baltimore (Chris Redman wore the high tops while playing for the Ravens though). Makes me glad Unitas shunned the Indianapolis chapter of Colts history (I'd do the same thing, quite frankly, and considering how entwined the Baltimore community & the players were, it's completely reasonable).

When Pat Tillman died serving our country his former college and pro teammate, then-Broncos Quarterback Jake Plummer, wanted to wear a decal on his helmet with Tillman’s #40 on it. The NFL disallowed it, with similar reasoning to disallow Manning from wearing the black high tops. In 2002 the NFL said only the Ravens could honor Johnny U, and in 2004 it said only the Cardinals could honor Tillman.
Incidentally, I think in retrospect the NFL should have had nobody wear #40 in 2004. At the very least all stadiums should have a Ring of Honor-like tribute to Tillman, Robert Kalsu, and other NFL players who gave their lives in war.

So, as a teenager, I really enjoyed watching Barry Sanders, Emmitt Smith, Marcus Allen, and even Bo Jackson as I played fullback and ILB growing up so I either wanted to block for them or tackle them (or at least take on that challenge 😂), but Sweetness was who most of those guys looked up to so it was awesome to follow their careers. It was never going to happen. The uniform policy has always been so strict and non-negotiable. And you nailed it--Precedence and the future impact was the "bigger picture" of the NFL. As you said, "Where do you draw the line?" in who can and can't do it. New rule starting last season allowing eligible offensive players to wear any eligible number (can't wear 50-79, possibly no 90s as well but I haven't confirmed that). Before that, there was a more strict number rule. And the WR wearing 10-19 has been a rule for a while.
It used to be that QB, K, and P could wear 1-19, WR 10-19 and 80-89 (was only 80-89 for many years, changed somewhere around 2000, I think), RB could wear 20-49, TE 40-49 (recent change) and 80-89, and OL 50-79.

Unlike the "No Fun League," the NCAA (!) allowed a college football player to change his number for one game as a tribute. On October 10, 1998, in a game against the Oklahoma Sooners at the Cotton Bowl, Texas Longhorns RB Ricky Williams switched his number from 34 to 37 in honor of legendary SMU Heisman Trophy winner and Pro Football Hall of Famer Doak Walker, who had just passed away on September 27. Williams, who met Walker in 1997 when Ricky won the Doak Walker Award as the nation's premier running back, helped the Longhorns thrash OU 34-3 on his way to winning the Heisman.

Missouri did this one year when a different player wore 25 in 2008. In the Oklahoma State game, it was Chase Daniel doing that. UTEP also did this last season when Hardison, their starting quarterback, wore 2 for the son of Babe Laufenberg (complete with his name on the jersey) who died at a young age. I got confused until the announcers said the reason why.

  • @onemangang2010

There is an easy solution to this problem.
What ever position said player played is the only position allowed to wear it in tribute.
Payton played RB therefore only a player playing RB may wear that jersey # for 1 game
If a QB passes away only a QB may wear it and so on and so on.
You avoid confusion and you pay respects to said player
Life is not that complicated people

Simple Solution. NFL makes a public statement announcing Faulk to wear Peyton's jersey ONCE ONLY as a ONE-TIME exception. All future requests are to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. How many NFL players of Peyton's stature exist? The issue won't come up that often.

Heading into 1974 there was slight talk of Payton contending for the Heisman trophy (a long shot for a HBCU). Payton started claiming July 25th 1954 instead of July 25th 1953 because he believed it would make him a more attractive candidate by being 20 years old. It stuck because record keeping wasn't as diligent and easy to verify back then.

If the $1500 fine is something to compare to, surely he wouldn't be hit with more than a few thousand bucks, something a multi millionaire could handle. it may suck but its a rule. you can't change it or else it will be taken advantage of. nfl/bears had their tributes. nhl had two all time great rw's die during this past season. nhl teams had a moment before their games after it. isles and habs had their own tributes before their games and put numbers on their jerseys. habs treat their deceased greats with state funerals. and players wore the number during tributes and during pre game skate. nfl put out the memo last fall for all teams to honour madden too. and the greatest tribute to payton was when barry who was closing in on his yardage record cited not wanting to break payton's record as one of the reasons for his sudden 'retirement'.

I agree with the NFL's ruling. There were plenty of tributes made the week of Payton's passing (ceremony at Soldier Field) and permanent ones afterwards (Walter Payton man of the year award).
It's a slippery slope if you allow it here. Where would you say "no" then. The list of scenarios is endless and then drags the whole tribute into quagmire. Then there is the remote possibility someone uses it for competitive advantages. Changing uniform numbers midseason could cause confusion for the opposition.
