Blood Meridian movie - The most violent book ever made is being turned into a movie. Cormac McCarthy’s epic historical novel “Blood Meridian or The Evening Redness in the West” has been said to be “unfilmable” because its disturbing content. Up until this point the dark nature of the book and poetic prose has been a hard sell for major studios, that is until now. Director John Hillcoat has been given the reins to take on the project, and has already begun filming. Other big names have tried and failed to take on the project in the past like Ridley Scott, James Franco, Michael Haneke and others. The question is now, is the general public ready to see McCarthy’s vision brought to life? Are you?

It's a bummer that David Milch of Deadwood didn't get to do this. He was the only guy with the patience in his writing to faithfully adapt this (that I know of, of course).

Fuck yeah. His portrayal of Kingpin in Netflix’s Daredevil is solid evidence he’d be a perfect for the role of the Judge.
Hate to ruin the party, but this short is very misleading. The adaptation was announced a year ago with McCarthy himself writing the screenplay, however, he died soon after the announcement was made. There have been no news since. It is unknown how far along the script was, and if this iteration will ever even get made.
There has been an update since my comment actually, a screenwriter by the name of John Logan is set to write the screenplay now, which means the project is still very much alive.

@@quentinking1188 maybe. who knows. I feel like if they take the route Dune took, it could be possible to narrate the entire book. gruesome scenes that would be too frightening for sensitive ppl could also be covered through narratives or implications.

Completely agree
One of the things that make it unfilmable isn't just the violence. Its the context of so many things that would be lost. Like knowing that the dogs running by with bones in their mouths had dug the up from a mass grave and things like that. They can make the movie but it will be so much small in scope and insight that it just doesn't seem worth it.

If they made Game of Thrones they can make Blood Meridian. I’m reading it now, it’s extremely violent but they don’t have to show every graphic detail. It’s an excellent book and great story.
Bruh, why was it so hard for someone to do that? There are films like "human centipede 2" and although the existing of this film, they can't adapt this book.
The issue is that you have to do the disturbing elements of blood meridian tastefully. Human centipede is a shlocky horror flick, so it’s much lower stakes than something that is based off of real life atrocities.
I want them to be able to adapt this into a film, but I’m worried they’re gonna be tame and boring. Holden would easily be seen as the most evil movie character, yet, he’d be a little boring. The reason people like his character despite the horrible things he does is because of his speeches, his philosophy, his personality. If they are stripped of any of that, we’re left with a boring version of Baron Vladimir. Even if he is acted well, it wouldn’t fully work for him. But who knows? Maybe he’ll be adapted fully to how he was written in the book.
My guy one of the main characters is a child serial killer/rapist and every other character is a killer. One scene dead bodies are being raped while babies are getting killed and it's the main characters doing it. Human centipede was just gross for the sake of being gross, Blood Meridian is a fictionalized version of a real scalp hunting gang with scenes of them destroying entire towns.

A clown that kills people is nothing compared to one of the delawares slamming a baby so hard against the ground the top of its head explodes.

I live in El Paso. I have seen the actual letter kept in the university of Texas at El Paso. The letter confirms the horrific truth that the judge was real.
I don’t want to see it get dumbed down if it’s going to be on film. You may not receive everyone’s taste but that film will catch my eyes, I have no limits.
It’s too cryptic, violence can be worked around (look at American psycho) but the showing the cryptic parts of the book would ruin it
It doesn't make any sense why anyone would consider it "unfilmable".
The only scene that i could see them not filming is the Delaware smashing two babies on a rock.
Otherwise, the violence is nothing more than any other action movie.

John Hillcoat also directed The Road and captured the grim tone of the book damn near flawlessly. Blood Meridian though is going to be a bit trickier to adopt.

Yes. But it can’t just be anyone directing. And there needs to be a sting force behind the production. Didn’t Terry Gilliam take a crack at it once? That would have been epic. It would be a hard thing to watch and would definitely cause riots, but so did Stravinsky’s Rite Of Spring.

I doubt they’ll ever execute it the way the book was written.

It will not be completed. I’d love to be proven wrong but everyone from Ridley Scott to Martin Scorsese to fucking James Franco have tried and failed to adapt the story to a film. I can’t imagine this production will turn out any differently.
See I don’t see why they would water it down I mean for god sake look at some of the fucked up movies made in the last 40 years. It can be done it absolutely can, but it should be a miniseries not a movie because there’s way too much to tell.
