My uncle played this song for me when I finished high school and at the time I was thinking I'll never go back to school but this year 2017 I got my bachelor's degree and all day I was listening to this song and thinking of my family I'm the first male in my family to get a college degree so my advice to anyone reading this don't give up and it's never to late to go back to school.
Amen! I went back to school at the age of 45 to become a nurse. And there was a lady in my class who was 60 who also graduated and is also now a Registered Nurse. God is soo very good to us :)
I dropped out of HS back 73. My mom was disappointed, she looked forward to my graduation. But she attended my other 3 commencement, my A.A. degree, B.A degree, and M.A. in Education.
I learned this song in school music class when I was about 8 years old (nearly 40 years ago!) And have never forgotten it - even more meaningful now. ❤
Best times I ever had in school was when we had to sing this song in the classroom during 5th grade, everything after those years went into the gutter...
Great song! I met Carnes while I was a missionary in Zuni, NM in the late 90's. He played music for a church activity. It was awesome. He did some fantastic stuff for the old Lamanite discussions that the missionaries used to teach. My dad served back then, so I grew up listening to Carnes' songs.
I learned this song in elementary school, I never truly realized how meaningful it was! I'm in college now and can better appreciate the beautiful meaning and melody.
The first time I heard this song was in kindergarten back home at my reservation's school. I have vague yet fond memories of being taught this is sign language and singing it in class. I am now a freshman in college sitting in my universities library working on an essay. with my first year pursuing a degree in multicultural early childhood education quickly drawing to an end. It's funny the things we remember, and even funnier when we choose to remember them.
4th grade, Charlotte Park Elementary School, Nashville Tennessee, This song brings back lots of memories, we sang it in a school show, and I remember my mom used to work all the time so she never made it to any of my school activities but she was able to make it to this one, but regardless for some strange reason she decided to stay in the car at the parking lot through out the whole thing while my oldest sister came in and watched me perform with my class...I will never understand why my mom didn't come in, she is not some mean bitter old lady and she loves and cares for me very much. I guess that's just one of the mysteries of my life lol great song though and it carries a great message that people seem to be forgetting today in 2015.
Our great Chief, Manuelito. Hastiin Ch'iłhaajinii, was a man who had inspired my people for generations and generations. He understood what colonization meant, but he understood what education would mean for us to live in the white man's world. Ahéhee' Hastiin Ch'iłhaajinii.
First time of hearing this gorgeous song while traveling through New Mexico today 8 Oct. 2019!!! It's been making me cry as well because it is so beautiful!!! God bless this song and the beautiful people it comes from!!!!
I love this song! I saw the BYU dancers perform in Oklahoma just after I was baptized at 8. My family invited them over for a fireside (actual) celebration and I'll always cherish that memory 💎💎💎
Great rendition! My father assisted in the editing and completion of this song in my front room when I was three years old. That was in 1969 with Jan Howard, John Rainer, and my father Thomas Aust. The location of its completion is 256 North 500 West (State Street) in Provo, Utah. The mirrored homes were the original residence of President John Taylor, the third president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Now, I have my doctoral degree because of this song that was first completed in my home.
My daughter used to sing this song to me so very forlorn and somber and every time I would cry or just get emotional. I think she learned the song at school maybe Jr highschool. Good song.
I first heard this song when I was in kindergarten during Thanksgiving. It's been an important song to me my entire life because it's reminded me that if you want to do something with your life, just go and do it. If you give honest effort with pure intent, you can do what you need to in order to be happy.
Arlene is my aunt, my father's sister and this song is beautiful it should touch the hearts of all Native Indigenous peoples. It is sooo difficult to keep your heart grounded in a world that does not understand the Indian heart. I sang this song as a child this whole album is heartfelt ..the Eagle's bed is a beautiful song......be proud to sing this song. It is a symbol of pride and hope.Think of Bosque Redondo maybe that will help you understand the long walk to education and what it signifies
This song brings out the positive days of TeecNosPos Boarding n a realistic contribution to my college education....the real Bears? TNP Bears not Shonto r Chicago!!!! Ms. Cody I am still in love with u..most beautiful Native Lady!!!
This makes me feel guilty for my wrongs so I would cry but when I listen to it I feel like there talking to me so I feel better and I love this song it helped me in my hard times I found out that I'm related to Chester nez my great great great grandfather
Sure would be nice to have Arlene's album Encircled on UA-cam or ITunes. I just found it on Amazon, but I can't buy it right now. Would love to have her cassette version transferred over to UA-cam someday.
