We are happy to share a few video clips of Male Northern Cardinals with various levels of adult plumage. When they first fledge, the male and female cardinals are very dull and lack the majority of their coloration. They already have adorable little mohawks but they just appear brownish with a few off-color strands of red or orange here and there. Also, their beaks are initially a gray color, and slowly begin to turn more bright orange as the Cardinal matures!
The first video is a Fledgling approximately 3-4 weeks out of the nest. The second clip includes a slightly older juvenile Cardinal, likely ~2-3 months old. The final clip is a fully grown / mature adult that could be a year old or 7 years old! Your guess is as good as ours! 😂
