"Skinner's Sense of Snow" music replacement on syndication and Disney+

  • On the Disney+ print of one of my favorite Mike Scully-era "The Simpsons" episodes, "Skinner's Sense of Snow," they used the syndicated rerun version's soundtrack that replaces the music during the scene where the Springfield Elementary kids wreak havoc across the snowed-in school building while Principal Skinner is bound and gagged in a dodgeball sack. On original TV airings and on the DVDs, Guns N' Rose's "Welcome to the Jungle" plays underneath the mayhem (a song that's been featured on "The Simpsons" quite a bit), but on syndicated reruns and the Disney+ version, a generic instrumental rock tune that appears to be a soundalike of the Ramones' "Blitzkrieg Bop" plays underneath. It's obviously from licensing/copyright reasons, even though "Welcome to the Jungle" is intact on at least a couple other episodes on Disney+.

    This is the reason why I buy the DVDs.

      Ironically this is often the sacrifice I have to make when buying DVDs. The Simpsons is one of the few shows where they contain the original music rather than the other way around.

      @@AlkisenSuper, indeed. Plus, the Simpsons DVDs also have fun extras like the audio commentaries on each episode (hearing their behind-the-scenes stories can be very fascinating) and deleted scenes.

      @@ZakWolf Sadly even Simpsons' DVDs fell off by the end. Season 19 had commentaries but no deleted scenes, while season 20 didn't have either due to being a rushed 20th anniversary release.

      Oddly, "The Simpsons Christmas 2" DVD I had for over a decade has the Disney+ track.

      @@brainstar64, it turns out that track was made for syndicated reruns. Original airings had "Welcome To The Jungle", and since that was kind of a basic episode compilation DVD, they decided to save money by using the syndicated music track, while saving clearing the rights involving "Welcome To The Jungle" for when the episode got remastered for the Season 12 DVD set, since those were more "deluxe" than those basic episode compilation DVDs (what with the audio commentaries, deleted scenes, and all those bonus features).

    Because relicensing Guns N' Roses songs are too expensive, and their lyrics are 'problematic'.

    • @mightyfilm
      @mightyfilm 7 місяців тому +3

      ALL music rights are expensive and, often times, impossible to renegotiate. That's why there are a LOT of cuts on their release of The Muppet Show. Stubborn and/or greedy music rights holders, rarely the actual musicians, and often times old executives that bought up the rights to music (if they didn't have them already) specifically to make as much money as possible off them. Which is why you see a LOT of them used in prescription drug ads with the lyrics changed.
      Then again, this DID come during the very musical montage heavy years of The Simpsons. Something that was bound to come back and bite them in the end eventually.

      @@mightyfilm, indeed, the Mike Scully and early Al Jean eras tended to use a lot of existing pop/rock songs. Sometimes it was fun, and me and my brother liked to wonder which songs the show would eventually use. I also liked the running gag in "The Parent Rap" (near the end of Scully's tenure as showrunner) with Homer saying he's into Blue Oyster Cult and their "Don't Fear the Reaper" song, and then the actual "Don't Fear the Reaper" song plays during the closing credits.

    I presume Disney used the wrong version of the episode when doing the Disney+ masters

    Don’t forget there’s no outdated cultural depictions warning before The Great Mouse Detective on Disney+ despite Basil of Baker Street’s Chinese Mouse disguise.
