In this video, we are gonna create the Doctor Strange Portal effect using CC Particle World. No paid plugins required

Hey! I love this effect, its just what I was looking for! But I was wondering if you would know how to change the shape of the movement the particles spin in? When we see the floor of the effect, we can also see a green circle around our particles. However, mine is a hexagon instead of a circle, so it's making my particles spin in a hexagon shape rather than a circle. I would love to know if you happen to know how to change this!
Oh the technical term is the Motion Path box!
Hexagon shape is because the TARGET NULL s are moving too fast..
I am away from my laptop at the moment. Will get back to you in the evening..
Until then, try these once..
1. Decrease the Parent Null rotation speed a bit.. Instead of time * 600, try with a lower amount..
or
2. Try changing the frame rate of your composition (I am counting on this. I think increasing the frame rate should fix this)
or
3. Try increasing the size of the Portal by increasing the TARGET NULL Distance from Parent Null

In after effects 2023, the Track Matte option doesn’t work like it’s supposed to. I just see a list of all my layers and no “Alpha”, ”Alpha Inverted”, etc. Where did it go?
hi, thank you for the file... just how the portal gets full rounded? (circle) I can not find the bottom edge layer
Go into each CC Particle World Layer and disable Floor
So at 6:30 when I try to set the key frames so the saber enlarges like the particles it doesn’t change to the key frames, it stays the same size the entire way through
That shouldn't happen..
OK, If you are facing any problems with the Saber, Instead of animating the mask scale , You can always precomp the Saber layer and then scale the entire precomp
in my after effects software the video presets is not showed how can i download or what can i do ?
@zerofxharry There's a black artifact (from the solid) from the solid the saber was made from. It rotates along with the saber and does not go away even after changing blend mode to screen.
For anyone else who faced the same error... Few minutes after posting this comment, I was able to solve this error by adding a "cc composite" effect to the Saber layer and then changing the blend mode to screen. You should do this before you render the Png sequence.
Haha... it still didn't work properly. I Finally fixed it by sandwiching all the effects in between 2 "cc composite" effect.... Add a cc composite to the saber before you render, After rendering, add a cc composite before you add your blur, glow and vibrance, set the blend mode to stencil luma. Then add another cc composite effect at the bottom and set the blend mode to colour dodge, overlay or any other as you see fit.
TIP:... You can make sure to toggle the transparent grid as you try out the blending mode to be sure you have a transparent background.
I am glad that the issue was fixed..🙂 But, I don't think it's supposed to be that complicated..
Usually Black Artifacts show up in Blend modes when the Black values are less than zero(negative values).. This can be easily fixed by adding a Levels effect to the Png sequence(before/after render) and clipping the output Black and White..
If that's not the Artefact you are talking about, the other artefacts I can think of might be because of trying to make the portal footage transparent.. As we plan to apply a Glow effect later, my suggestion is to not do that and just render out a Black and white footage making sure that the Black and White values are clipped.. In the final composite, we can always change the Blend mode and can add Glow effect.
3:50 when I tried to change expression and type TARGET NULL 2 it says :- TARGET NULL 2 IS MISSING OR DOES NOT EXIST but I did everything exactly as you did
Then, you didn't properly rename your Null objects then.
Make sure there is a Null object named as TARGET NULL 2 in your scene. Even the Capital letters and spaces matter..
If it's still not working,
In the first line of the expression
layer 1 = thisComp.layer("TARGET NULL");
Select "thisComp.layer("TARGET NULL") line and pick whip the Null object you want to link to.. This will automatically write the expression..

6:00 hello, when I draw a layer mask for the saber effect and link it to parent null it will not rotate circularly, it changes its shape to oval.
why it is happening
1. Something is not scaled right then. Check the Scale of Saber Layer and Null Layer. See if anything's not uniform (Both Horizontal and Vertical Scale has to be the same value.. ex: 100,100 ; 80,80 like that.)
2. Also check if the Anchor point of the Saber Layer is at the same position as Null Object
3. If you can't find any solution., Do this.
Instead of linking the Saber layer to the Null, Inside the Saber Layer go to the Mask Evolution, Alt click it and write "time*600" or "time*-600" . This will work the same way

Yes. Just change the time*600 expression to time*-600

Iwhen i mask and add saber and link to parent null the whole mask and surrounding rotating
Make sure the Saber effect is on a separate layer.(Create a NEW solid and add Saber effect)
If you don't want the Saber to behave that way, you can also animate the evolution property inside Saber effect. Alt Click the evolution and write "time*600" and it should work just the same
I have problems with changing the blending mode (at 5:50 in the video), because I do not find it in After Effects 2022
Go to the composition settings and check the 3d renderer. If it's set to CINEMA 4D, Blending modes won't be available. Change the renderer to Classic.
If that's set to Classic renderer too, make sure you hit that Toggle switches/Modes button at the bottom

@@zerofxharry ye I can see that cause I am Totally lost at the saber part cause Nothing works for me, I don't get that nice barrier arround my eclipse thing and it is not see through, the saber effect stays in a picture form (even tho it is arround the Elipse tool) PLZZ help me cause I am completely lost

But, Did you change the Blending mode of Saber layer to Screen..?
When I link the saber to the parent null then the circle didn't follow the path it starts to move in other direction??
Something must have scaled wrong.. Check the scale of the Saber layer and Parent Null and see if any value is negative..
Otherwise, you can do one more thing. Rotate the Saber using time expression individually rather than parenting to Parent Null.

You can animate the nulls in the shape of a square and if you tweak with particle physics a bit, it should work..

Your expressions aren't working. They're not showing me a change in the shape of the particles. Is there maybe a 2022 version of these expressions?
An Expression unlike plugins would work with any version of After Effects. You must be doing something wrong
do you need any plugin for create portal?
Not needed actually. But, in this video I used two free plugins called Saber and VC Color Vibrance to enhance the look

U truely have strong AE skills. But it's hard to follow u bcz u skip steps and I am struggeling understanding ur english! I myself am not english speaker. So I am learning both: English and AE. ... :D
I am sorry for that. Most of my tutorials are for Intermediate After Effects users as the techniques that I use are a bit complex for a beginner because I try to do everything inside After Effects..
If you just want to composite a Dr. Strange Portal into your scene, I suggest you to watch other tutorials on UA-cam where you can do it relatively easy with stock footage and assets..

I am really sorry.. but I couldn't understand your question..
The portal was indeed done as a single thing and was rendered out.. so that it can be used as a drag and drop in any footage..
The reflections however vary from scene to scene.. as reflections are dependent on the angle of camera/viewing.. It's better to do them separately
I copy and paste the expression, but i got a syntax error. Why?
Please Recheck.. If you accidentally copied an extra dot or " , " it too can present as a Syntax error

I am sorry I couldn't be of any help to you..But, If you are a complete beginner and want to achieve Dr. Strange Portal effect, I suggest you to watch this effect tutorial from other creators where they use premade Portal Stock Footage and composite..
My video is intended for intermediate AE users and involves a relatively complex method of creating Portal from Scratch completely inside After Effects..
