    Description: if you're interested in supporting the channel this way. Thank you if you do. Tonight I talk a little about the late write David Foster Wallace and the sadness in modern American culture. I originally intended to talk for 10 minutes before reading one of his essays, but am not that disciplined, so this is just it's own episode.
    I'll make a separate video reading the essay and link it here (when i record it).
    "Shipping Out: On the (nearly lethal) comforts of a luxury cruise" is about his experience on a luxury Caribbean cruise. It was about the absurdity of how hard the company-at-sea tries to avoid the discomforts of their patrons, and how paradisal these manufactured, "FUN" activities, entertainment, meals, and relaxation can really be. The unnaturalness of it all is both hilarious and sad.
    Thanks for watching. Please educate, correct, and suggest ideas for me and others in the comments.

    Archetypes are so fascinating. The wounded healer archetype is one of my favorites. It's defined by a person becoming deeply wounded by some traumatic life situation (illness, grief, ptsd, failure, heartbreak, etc.). The wound is so deep that it transforms the person in a fundamental way. The person is then called upon by life to find a way to heal their own wounds. This daunting challenge, if accepted, has the power to ultimately transform the wounded person into a healer. The healer has been through hell, but has found the way out, and is now able to help others to find their way out of their own hell. A good example are the veterans who have significantly healed from their own ptsd, and are now able to help other veterans who are still struggling with it.

      Man that sucks. I'm sorry. My little dog is my best friend and knowing I'll likely out live him makes me physically sick to my stomach. Again, I'm really sorry man. Try to stay in good spitits as I'm sure your dog would want you to be happy. They always seem to do anything and everything to make us happy.

    I really enjoyed listening to this. Mental Health Awareness is something that needs to be shared often. And I love that you talked about the relationship between the 1% and poverty and our roles in American society of what is expected from "the one who's made it" in life. Your voice is very soothing and comforting. 🌻💜

    Also, audio quality is great, but work on your compressor settings a bit more. If you’re using a condenser, you’ll definitely want a pop filter. Those plosives are what are hitting the compressor and creating that ducking out sound. I wouldn’t EQ out the lows, because those are nice and soothing esp for ASMR.

    • @pricesmith8450
      @pricesmith8450 4 роки тому

      If you can find like a wind-shield or some sort of foam cover, it’ll be lower profile and more out of the way than a bulky pop filter for these videos.

      I just love David Foster Wallace’s style of writing. I have not read Infinite Jest but just looked up the synopsis and it looks wild. I am very intrigued and must get it when I go to the library tomorrow. It sounds better than the room of the system synopsis wise in that there is a whirlwind of matter to play with and sounds like a dystopian 1984-stylized narrative. There’s three separate storylines in Broom of the System; it’s an excellent book. I got this excerpt from the wiki on it: “A recurring concept in The Broom of the System is psychology as relating to words; many of the theories discussed involve Ludwig Wittgenstein's ideas and principles.[1] Wallace himself has stated that the book can be viewed as a dialogue between Wittgenstein and Derrida.[2]”

  • @brookelynn3567
    @brookelynn3567 2 роки тому

    You should probably do research on the role of stigma around mental illness and NeuroDivergence, before trying to analyse these topics.
    Capitalism plays a huge role in creating a rift between unachievable Neurotypical ideals that everyone is held to and physical reality, the reality in which NeuroDivergent people inhabit. The social rules and lives of NT's are meaningless to ND's because they have no basis in current reality. They uphold outdated social beliefs and customs that hold everyone back.
    ND people tend to focus on facts, what people need in the now and future, to live and thrive, not pretend social constructs like productivity and perfectionism that leads people to see alternative brain development or Neurodiversity, as abnormal, rather than a fact of life. Depression being one form that can affect anyone, poor and wealthy.
    In Wallace's case, severe depression limits your ability to see meaning. It has to be treated physically. Having the option to receive therapy and medication for severe depression doesn't mean you actually will. Beliefs that medication is a weakness prevent people from being helped. What helps people in these circumstances is to find community support. If you're going to compare Wallace to Maya Angelou, you need to acknowledge the vastly different social support structures these people had and genetics.
    U.S. culture is not conducive to having supportive community around mental health. Therapy is seen as something only wealthy white women participate in. Something to cringe at, in mainstream culture because everyone else has to keep up the façade of being strong. Access to good therapy and healthcare is extremely limited. This is why society has become meaningless and toxic. It no longer recognises people's physical reality and needs, it only caters to the non-existant. People who never rest, or become unwell, who have shut off their humanity. The idea of the cruise ship is a literal metaphor for NT society and these types of people who have shut off their humanity in order achieve the ideal and cruise through life surrounded by fantasy, not looking beyond it to physical reality out of ignorance, pride, fear, and conceit.
