It's actually very interesting how Shad's video triggerd a series of high quality informative videos on the actual way to use nunchakus, aside from the flashy useless holliwood thing that we all know. (there are some more crappy ones out ther as well, but the good ones like yours are great and very much needed in the martial arts community)
I feel a little bad about all the times he said “if you’re still watching” because this is some really cool stuff that, yeah, most people just.. leave, it’s really unfortunate
My trainer told me that a nunchuck is meant to stun and sting someone, like a baton. When staying in australia, he used to keep one in his car for self defense
I don’t really know where Jayden is going maybe if he explains more. I’m not sure where the knife idea has come from. Seeing as the vid is about nunchucks, and it’s a vid response.
@@IronBodyMartialArts a Knife is a more effective weapon for Self Defence, because it isn’t particularly hard to kill someone with a Knife, thus if your opponent has any sense of self preservation, it’s easier to intimidate someone with a Knife than with Nunchucks, even if Intimidation doesn’t work, it’s easier to fight someone off if you’re using a Knife than Nunchucks because a Knife doesn’t need any training at all to be deadly
Bro. Those are good points. But this video isn’t about how great the nunchucks are. It’s a vid response to someone else specifically about Nunchucks. It’s not really a Knife V nunchucks topic. Good point though. That’s a mixed bag. I’m not sure which I would choose. They both have their advantages and disadvantages
Bro you are the real pro of nunchuks! I tried explaining the same points you said in that video's comments section but no one believed me there when I pointed out we need to put more amount of training to learn the mistakes we may do to perfectly learn that art of striking without getting hit back by our own nunchuks. Thanks for making this video bro! Others think that making fancy helicopter spins are useless which is true but those moves are not meant for striking but just to switch from one hand to other. I hope they understand the fact through this video. 👍
If you hit anyone with a nunchuk it will obviously hurt the opponent. But compared to many other weapons is simply not as effective. A simpler approach is a very good point as it is essentially a flail. But the stick point that Shad had is very good. And retractable sticks do exist btw. Like batons you can hide.
Those retractable sticks are garbage. Lose structural integrity to gain bad weapon made worse. Nunchaku is more effective than equally long stick can dream of being.
Agreed. If it wasn’t for a bit of extra weight they would be total garbage. The weight of the metal however makes them ok. They aren’t really proper friction lock either.
depending on where you live a collapsable baton might be illegal to cary like for example where i live they are with out a doubt illegal Nunchuku on the other hand are not
If I had to choose between this man and the shad guy, I would take this man's opinions about anything every single time. I don't understand why anyone should be a subscriber of Shadiversity, whatever his channel's name is.
This is a fantastic video for practicality. I personally believe to use them however you feel comfortable while remaining effective. Don't try to do what other people do necessarily, learn your own style. I have practiced for years and it may seem like how I use them is flashy, similar to Bruce Lee, but I can't help but use them that way, so I do. Then again I don't use the metal ones, I use really thick wooden ones on a cord. I'll also be released my response video to Shadiversity soon. Great points!
Excellent my friend and thank you. I agree with you. You are not wrong. I guess I should have clarified that this was my advice to Shad and not the whole nunchuck world. Once we can do basic without hitting ourselves, then we move on. So your method , which is also mine, is more than valid. Please do share me the link when you make the response.
@@IronBodyMartialArts Thank you for clearing that up, I can tell you have great skills with the weapon and even bring up some points that I've never heard before which I've really taken into consideration. The collapsible ones are very cool too, I'll have to look into getting some. Anyway just was stopping by to let you know that I just released my response to Shadiversity and within it I mentioned you a few times. Here's the link ua-cam.com/video/EsW6GkmHaY0/v-deo.html . I hope you're doing well.
11:09 If that's the case why not use a Knife over Nunchucks? 14:11 That's actually a real Sword Technique called a Murder Stroke, this technique is used against Armoured Opponents, and yes, you can get away with it without cutting your hands
depends on the sword. He was being broad with the term sword overall, as you can't do a murder stroke with any sword, even European swords, as there is a wide range of styles. As for knife vs. nunchucks for a concealable weapon, I agree, a knife would be better. That being said, self defense doesn't always mean the defender wants to kill or even do serious, just deter an attacker off without escalating the tension.
@@comixgod50 Exactly, a Murder Stroke can only be done safely with Straight double edged blades, such as the Longsword, it’s when you get into Curved single edged Blades such as a Messer that you run into problems
I remember reading about a murder case where the cops found several people just absolutely destroyed. Not at the same time or anything. It was over a period of several months or something. They were shocked at the amount of damage these people had sustained. They had breaks all over their bodies, their faces were turned to mush, etc. The cops could not figure out what the murder weapon was. When they finally caught the dude he had a pair of homemade nunchucks, and he had just been going ham on folks.
Dang... bro i had some home made metal pipe ones that could smash brick and stone easy. They are in some of my old vids at thd beginning of the channel
Very measured respone. Props for that. But Shad had the point of: if you give a noob a stick, and another one nunchucks. The noob with chucks is gonna hit himself, the stick dude wont
Who cares? Doesn't make it a garbage weapon. This guy understands how to use it properly without hitting himself in the nuts and face. That was one of Shad's weakest arguments imo. It's like saying flying planes is just too hard for dumb people so the military needs to cut funding to the airforce and focus only only ground stuff. FU lol Shad is not an authority on asian martial arts. He only does HEMA. I think he is biased. Some weapons are categorised as non-lethals like pepper spray, flash grenade, taser etc...There may be ethical or tactical reason to not want to kill a person. Cops could put spikes on baton to be mean but maybe that's not ethical? We could blow the earth up with nukes, but maybe not wise. Is it possible that despite nunchucks being non-lethal they may be preferred as weapon on weak opponents the same way police usage of pistols on criminals is good enough and they don't NEED military grade LMG against bank robbers despite the military weapons being better at killing? As a nerd Shad can be a little immature.
If he hits himself trying to swing nunchaku, then he's not just naive, he's incompetent. You shouldn't trust him with an axe, either, as he will probably chop himself in the leg (surprisingly easy to do). Yet, people won't say axes are terrible weapons.... Like this video, this one demonstrates just how easy nunchaku are to use: /watch?v=f4yUTv4vLpw
@@vanivanov9571 first off, hitting yourself in the leg with an axe is possible when you are chopping wood, not actually swinging for someones head. But my (and shads) point stands, a weapon that requires a lot of training to be used effectively isnt a good weapon, Anyone can point and shoot a gun at close range, even children manages that.
@@UToobUsername01 Shad does not have to be an authority on asian martial arts in order to see if one of their weapons sucks, thats simply an appeal to authority fallacy. And if one of your arguments is "he is biased" then i can just as easily say the same about you or this dude in the video. Im unsure what your point about the spiked batons are supposed to be, but if its lethality then that comes into play when talking about weapons. Also you seem to be EXTREMELY missinformed when it comes to firearms, American police have access to what you call "military grade", they dont have LMG's, because those are too heavy to carry around, or use in the event of a bank robbery. But the only standard of "military" grade personnel weapons are if they are fully automatic or not, and some other smaller ones like barrel length and attachments. Look, all im saying is: the points Shad made boils down to simple physics. And i know if i had to choose between a baton or nunchuks, im going with the baton
I believe your video is a very respectful response, but I think shads point still stands. Many of the things you've mentioned have been addressed by him on his second part as well. In fact about the force part you mentioned, he explained from a physics point of view why a whip and a nunchuk doesn't work the same way. He was very clear on the terminology about the forces applied. The video is a 3rd on the subject where he replies to another youtuber. Loved your video tho! It's nice to see people putting the effort into having a healthy debate about something they love.
damn that point is actually really good that if you hit a solid object with a straight stick really hard you hurt you hand. specially after repeated use from the shock going through the weapon and a nunchaku doesnt have that issue at all. maybe very very minor. i also think its alot more energy efficient to use. it feels that way anyway would really like to find out if its true but i feel like i need alot less energy to swing a nunchuck than stick
Me myself use nuchaku for last 4 years. Not as a weapon, but for conditioning my body and brain, also for training efficiency attack, body movement etc. People say nunchaku it suck because they dont know how to use it, and they very dependly to their weapon for winning, baton, knife, sword, etc and not the entire body. That is why most people get hit by their own nunchaku.
Man makes the weapon and the less there is man more weapon is needed. Those who get hit by their own nunchaku are not using it properly. Similarly might be said that sword is useless garbage dangerous stupid weapon because many swordsmen have died on their own swords. In reality and fiction.
If a nunchuck user and a stick user had equal amounts of training, and the nunchuck user trapped the stick, who do you thick would be forced to release their weapon first?
@@nujevad28 ua-cam.com/video/gfYbyJxH1SQ/v-deo.html This guy responded to Shad and he practiced Nunchucks for 16 years Even he also admits Nunchuck are awfully bad for defense and told the viewers not to ever use nunchuck for Joint Locks
@@nujevad28 It really depends on the weapon being trapped, the gap (rope/chain length), and whether the defender is just trapping the weapon or using it to damage the limb or shuck the weapon out of their hand. I'd say, if you plan to trap, don't just stand there and wait for their second hand to strike, but go for a joint lock/break, or throw.
Yea. That kid did a good vid. I’m not sure about 16 years of training with nunchucks though. He looks about 16. Lol. But. Years don’t matter, time spent training hard matters. I’ve met people who have trained “years” in a certain art and are not very good at all.
HEHE I used to use that same style of collapsable chucks...most nunchaku katas were developed in the 70's to attract students. They really are super fun for the whistling sound. This entire debate is dumb, but finding lots of new martial arts channels is fun.
I love all the nunchaku responses to shad , Ive done martial arts all my life and I have seen that you can be flashy with any weapon it’s not exclusive to nunchaku, if you are interested I’ve been doing a few demos my self with coconuts and other analog targets to show how nasty a real hit from then can be and how simple they really are , thank you for this demonstration
@@IronBodyMartialArts yes it is easier than I thought it would be , I do plan on doing more in depth testing and comparing light& heavy chucks vs batons soon as well , thanks for checking my video out
I think Shad had no true idea of what he was talking about. I think he corrected himself afterwards. Nunchaku are good weapon for those who know how to use it. There are better and simpler weapons out there. But those who choose Nunchaku as a weapon have patience and dedication. It can be as effective as anything else. The wielder is what makes the difference. And I agree that for one who is looking for quick results and not too much training or obstacle to overcome, Nunchaku are stupid.
so it looks like he's turned the nunchucks into a traditional flail. I do believe these techniques could be employed by the average person with little or no training (one of the points shadiversity makes) Also shadiversity fails to address the fact that with proper technique, the head of the flail(nunchuck) can develop higher velocity than the hand. (force multiplier). However, would I choose the nunchuck over other weapons on a battlefield? most likely no. That being said, I can see situations for self-defense and close-quarters fighting where the nunchuck could outperform other weapons available. Good video.
I am two years late to the Shad controversy but it is great to see the legacy is all the best nunchuck videos on UA-cam are responses to him. Most people today don’t want to take time to practice. I say good for them because I have no problem with it. I also have no time for tricks. Two years later and your video is gold!
The entire argument is: a proper trained user with a nunchuk can be deadly. Just defeated itself, if someone without training can be more deadly with just a improved weapon or not even that (like a stick) then your weapon already shows it's flaws. For example, 14 and 15 century bows and crossbows were better/stronger than the time arquebus or other powder weapons of the time, but was easier to a untrained peasant to use a arquebus than a bow/crossbow and be close to as deadly, we know who won in the end. So again, if your weapon needs a set of specific circumstances to be better than any improvised shit, then it is a bad weapon.
Nearly there. Except for the fact that a stick of the same size can not be concealed in the same way. Hence, the sweeper or nunchuck finds its niche. It also has a different quality to the force being a semi flexible weapon. A baton is not a nunchuck a nunchuck is not a baton. This is why semi flexible weapons have their place.
The reason flail type weapons went out of style is because we started figuring out physics, when the contacting force isn't connected to the leveraging force the outcome is to unpredictable to be efficient. Yes with training it can be effective, but with all that training and work it can still be easily beaten by any random tree branch by someone with no training
One more uselessly inept keyboard warrior appearing to spew his idiotic religion. Let's add some old-fashioned racism and massive ignorance about past and current use of nunchaku. Of course idiocy shown is not even particularly impressive idiocy as well as this new idiot is so stupid that he can't even figure out how to improve his idiocy. He can barely imitate already-formed and boring idiocy. Strangely enough one man with no training in nunchaku beat 12 armed guards and he used nunchaku to do it. He also wasn't Charles Arthur Salvador. American police also use nunchaku as well as it is very good weapon for their needs and I don't think American police train long with their hand-to-hand equipment. Did you know one dagger is more effective than whole besieging army with all necessary equipment and thousands of heavily armed soldiers?
Great response, coming from a fellow responder to Shad's nunchaku video. I can't believe it took UA-cam algorithms this long to show me your response. I agree with pretty much everything you say. I would add that there are many effective ways of using a nunchaku two-handed that are impossible with a stick, but not all of them are effective with the collapsible nunchaku. I haven't had one of those in a long time. Of course, you have the advantage of being able to collapse to 1/2 the length of an equivalent collapsible baton, so there's that. I'll be checking out more of your videos.
Barring guns, the only weapon a person is likely to come up against in a real world scenario that they couldn't easily run away from is a knife or dagger. In that respect, nunchucks seem like a pretty ideal defense if both people were roughly the same size and height. The person with the knife just wanted to rob or rape you, he wasn't looking for a fight where he didn't have the reach advantage.
I think that the NUNCHUCKS were the answer in Asia, to the distance fight against soldiers with armor, as was the mace with chain in medieval Europe. In this sense, it is understood that the movements are more distant and powerful, not so much acrobatics.
@ohiograssman1564 There's something about the traditional hard wood nunchaku...it just looks the part. When I was young, I preferred the metal telescopic ones, but they don't look as cool.
Yea the points you touched on occurred to me as well. In addition, nun chucks have a lot of other advantages like being able to reach around guard like other flail weapons. Every weapon has its strength. One of the biggest of flails is portability and the ability to deploy quickly in addition to having a lot of speed without needing to be very large or strong.
@@IronBodyMartialArts yep! And also if you don't have monster joints the flail weapon allows you to use a lot of force without carrying the stress on arm joints which will be subjected to similar forces of any stick 😆
I have practiced with nunchucks and find them to be super fun. I never understood why people ragged on them. Your able to build up momentum and force and put that into someone face. Or knees , collar bone Ect. All weapons are pros and cons. It’s all about your ability to understand and use the weapon. Great vid.
You can even use nunchuck with a different weapon combination. Tonfa Stick Knife Baton Short sword. Another Nunchucks(wouldn't recommend cause controling two Nunchucks sucks and you have no way of blocking.
The thing would be testing a nunchuck against armor. Would it hurt a knight which at that point? We do know it would do the same damage as say a one handed mace. I could see some interesting areas for it, but it would be a last ditch effort weapon. Also, it depends on what kind of armor is the person getting hit with a nuchuck wearing? Even padded cloth armor might have the ability to kill the force of the nunchuck. I don't think he has done any tests like that.
I mean his main point is that NUNCHUCKS are a worst weapon on comparision to others because they require training to make the holder more lethal. Whilst others no, for example a stick. They are weapons? Yes He's just saying they are not as good as others.
I don't think he was talking about an expert such as yourself. I think he was talking about it's effectiveness vs that of a stick for example. The average person will be much more effective with a stick! A person will not stand still and let you hit them. I respect your expertise.
I've been useing them since I was 11 , I love working out with them, but I can promise you, if someone came close to me whipping them thay would be knocked out, good video thank you, for being clear and simple
Although I do believe that a solid stick would transfer more force. I think the lack of shock you feel in your hands is due to a significant amount of force from the strike transferring to the bouncing back of your weapon. However, in your video you clearly and impressively demonstrate that a skilled wielder can lesson the amount of force lost due to bouncing.
Disclaimer, i came here because of shadvercities nunchuck videos. i think shads biggest issue is he continues to try to use the nunchuck like a stick, which it is not. he practiced the nunchucks for a shortish time as a teenager, like a yearish and yea, i agree with your point that he should know that he should know that tools have to be used a certain way, what they are designed for. but he side steps this argument with the argument that one doesnt need experience to form an informed opinion, as that can form an opinion through observation and second hand research.
This has been great thank you so much.. I see you rooting as you strike kind of a lost part of the process and something you rarely see on UA-cam with people using this weapon.. thanks again and good luck with your journey..
Great video I just found your channel and subscribed. Thank you for pointing out what I have told people for over 40 years. The speed Nunchakus are primarily for show not self-defense, they are short in length and lightweight. I am not as skilled as you are with Nunchakus but when friends or family see mine in the garage, they ask me if I know how to use them and when I say yes, they of course ask me to show them. I have 5 pairs, but I use one of these 2 to show them: Cocobolo 14-inch 7 link chain or my Black poisonwood 16 inch, with 5.5-inch paracord and while I use them fluidly and quick enough (while holding them like you do at the end) the speed is not what they had hoped for lol. In 40 years, I have used them only twice in real life, both times to stop a vicious dog attacking a small dog.
"Stupid" was meant (I belive) in contrast to other weapons. As a weapon by themselves, nunchucks were said to be better than bare hands by Shad himself, but compared to other weapons, they simply offer no real benefits against any other weapon, apart from very minor reach advantage over knives, and psychlogic effect. They also require some actual skill to be used, compared to sticks, staves, etc
There are reasons why shield and spear is most practical combination of weaponry, but not everybody uses them. Something strange is going on when most practical is the not only option ever used.
@@vksasdgaming9472 Probably the reason is because other weapons can offer certain things the Spear and Shield can't or do it better...like range (Bow/Crossbow), CQC (Swords), Against Armor (Halberd which is just a stick with extra/Mace) Unlike nunchucks atleast which almost any weapon can do it's job
@@vksasdgaming9472 It's simply just a Force Multiplier, if anything you can consider it as a Flawed Flail for having the hitting end too long. I would show you a Video about a where a Flail, Nunchucku, and a Stick was tested by hitting a device that measures impact but I cant find the video and I remember Shad even replied in that video. (Edit: Foudn the video but I was mistaken it's a Flail vs Mace ua-cam.com/video/L3MonegdQJ8/v-deo.html) For your "I find it very implausible that something with proven combat effectiveness is inferior when compared to everything." a Rock is also a historically proven and effective combat weapon, but you and I both know a rock is Inferior to almost every weapon we can think off. That out of the way, yes nunchaku is "Proven in Combat" but most of those cases are against Unarmed opponent and at that point any weapon is good against an unarmed Opponent (At least I'm talking from the examples I've been given like that Homeowner attacking a guy with Nunchaku) As for real Combat, yes they're makeshift weapons originally, but one thing to note is *They didn't last very long* there's barely records of Nunchuck being used in Real Warfare compared to a Club or sharpened Stick. And you genuinely don't have to take my word for it, You can look it up yourself or even look up in UA-cam about Nunchaku historical relevancy.
@@90enemies Weapons for self-defense and warfare are completely different. I don't think tazers are considered efficient weapons for warfare as there are no records of them ever being used in warfare, yet they are very effective in their niche. Even tear gas has proven itself utterly useless as weapon of warfare. Besides being flawed flail with too long hitting end might mean that the other end is a handle meant to grab it. Thus it has uses regular, irregularly distributed flail does not have. Similarly quarterstaff is flawed spear having no sharp blade at the end.
My two cents is that disregarding anything as stupid is great way to get sideswiped by that same stupidity. Similarly reverse roundhouse kick to head in personal combat is extremely stupid, yet there are many videos of professional fighters getting defeated with them.
I like your point of the whipping motion, because the tip of the nunchucks seems to accelerate considerably faster than a stick. Atleast it it would with me holding a stick, maybe someone with more stick experience can move just as fast
In general you need to know what weapons may do in substandard or non ideal conditions. Even under the poorest conditions, you need to really make a mistake to strike yourself with a solid firm weapon, because in general the strike and all of it's force, are moving away from you and it would need to be significantly redirected to hit you the wielder. Swing with a sword, an axe, a mace, a staff, the energy is moving away from you and being propelled by your own mass, even thrusting with pole arms, spears or swords again the energy is moving away from you. Compared to the nunchucks, there is the ever present possibility that they could rebound and some of the striking force could end up being directed into you the wielder. With training, proper stance and proper technique you can very realistically mitigate this possibility but randomness is always possible and you can never completely prevent it. That is a significant problem for any weapon and makes them substantially less effective. Also on the topic of force, you make a statement that doesn't add up when you look at the physics. Nunchucks gain no extra momentum or "whipping force" when they swing. An investigation into the physics of the item will demonstrate this. The only forces at play when striking with them are the mass or the total amount of the materials weight and the acceleration of the swing arc. The acceleration of the swing arc is directly proportional to how fast/hard you swing them and how long they are. These forces apply to both nunchucks and any solid weapon without a linkage point.
When swinging a Nunchuck there is centrifugal/petal force that can not be achieved with a stick, as usually you cant rotate your wrist as fast as the pivot on the chain or rope.. so i disagree with your statement.. There is another force.. it is a greater centrifugal force, it is the hallmark of chain and whip weapons..but.. your point sounded good and i see where you are coming from. Perhaps overly absolute as you can see now.. This point has been overlooked by most. Great comment thread and i agree with your first point,, Thanks for putting the time to make such an engaging comment..
As long as you do not strike towards yourself (outside towards inside) there is no practical risk of hitting yourself and even with already mentioned direction is very small. In short: don't wrap your strike towards your head. Rebound is non-issue as it will not mysteriously reach striker's skull from end of his arm and actually nunchaku feels more pleasant to strike with than rigid weapons as recoil is absorbed by cord/chain. Perils of nunchaku are vastly exaggerated and same applies to its difficulty of use as weapon. Learning to hit passed ping pong balls takes lots of effort to learn, but striking a target (mobile or not) is much easier.
Pulled this from internet, can anyone enlighten if it’s accurate? “Its (nunchaku) intended use is as a training weapon, since it allows the development of quicker hand movements and improves posture.” “It was not a historically popular weapon because it was ineffective against the most widely used weapons of that time such as samurai swords and naginata, and few historical techniques for its use still survive.”
It is not impossible and sounds plausible, but it does not make nunchaku useless GARBAGE which is worse than being unarmed. It certainly can be used for that purpose. Swords and naginata were purposefully made weapons so of course repurposed tool or training equipment is inferior to them. Assuming nunchaku is Okinawan weaponized flail its creators also knew it was not as good as sword. There might have been exchange like this. Spoken by Toshiro: admiring Akiras sword: hey Akira, how you got that sword? Akira: I took it from samurai I beat to pulp. He survived and will remember that day well. Toshiro: I want a sword too... Akira: don't worry. I can teach you how to get one. You just need that flail we tresh rice with and smack him real hard with it. He never sees it coming. I hope.
Go to a tournament with it... Or at least someone make such a tournament to end such discussions and actually make an engineering effort to create a battle made nunchuck... and see the effectivity of it in practice and combat. Additionally the initial fear of being hit by it give it less popularity as a combat weapon. Bottom line is, get into combat with it... I will personally not judge if it goes wrong, just don't defend it when it sucks... Rely not on scriptures told about such things, theory vs practice all the time... Theory saves time but it all comes down to practice and making it work. Additionally hope some one just measures the success rate of such a battle and improve that. But honestly it does look very heavy and unpredictable, which will not be a popular choice in combat sports (if their is such a sport) I am preparing my body for battle soon, since I feel great shame for my hocky pokey martial arts master long ago.
Yea. Good points. Some full contacts use of it would be great. I think the HEMA guys do some sparring with all the weapons. But armour is needed. I also think there is a French organisation who do some full contact armoured sparring. The gear is expensive. So. I’m. I’ll just stay in my back yard. I don’t really care that much about the nunchuck I just think that Shad had a few flaws in his use of the thing. But even then. I don’t really care that much. It’s all just UA-cam games not real life.
The telescopic version of a nunchuck are hardly the best one to make your case, however if you are good enough and know what you are doing, it is still an effective weapon.
Great video, Shadiversity is basically using that video for comedy, nunchucks kill absolutely, and the opponent cannot tell where they're coming from, in the hands of someone experienced, no one wants to approach that in an actual real fight. If its heavier wood, its bone crushing but slower, if its lighter wood, you can't see the strikes, and its still very damaging, every nunchuck style whether short, long, heavy light, all has their own advantages and each one is going to pose its own problem for the adversary.
A child could pick up a small tree branch or bush and completely negate most of not all of the damage they could cause, and they could do it with absolutely no training against an opponent that has trained for years with these broken sticks. Yes they can be devastating, but so is a screwdriver, but I'm not tie 2 of them together and expect it to be better. I can except them as an athletic art and a dexterity training but as a legitimate weapon it's a total joke considering how much training you have to do to even be competent
Excellent points. This is my favorite response vid. I’m making one but don’t think I’ll tag it to Shad, it’s just more the prompting I needed to getting around to making my video on the subject.
@@IronBodyMartialArts Thanks man. Here it is. Guess I’ll tag it as a response vid and later change it to be more general. ua-cam.com/video/UpXxw1dnhkU/v-deo.html
i watch Shadiversity all the time like his vids well most of the time i think one of his issues he's book smart and nothing at all wrong with that but are things you can't learn from books and he gets most of what he knows if from books but any real pratice with what he talks about plus the home made weapons doesn't help ethier
Lol. Yea. He seems like a real good guy and I actually agree with many of his points on this one. Nunchucks can be overrated,, but there were so many simple fixes to his points. His battle chucks were cool. Lol. But too big for starters, he forgot the extended arm/ face rule. And he used the chucks like we all did when we were 15. Lol. Still. Nothing against the guy.
Shad makes a lot of points, but even he exaggerates at times. He seems to have a huge issue with double headed or flail type weapons for safety reasons. While some double head weapons are seemingly useless, I suppose it really does depends on how you use the weapon though.
Enjoyed the video, impressive skills. I think you missed the point of Shads video. If you were to put 20 people to combat and each one pick a unique weapon, what would be the last one on the table? As a art it is awesome as a practical weapon it's on the bottom of the list.
Thanks bro. No. I got the point. He just said a couple things that were wrong. In my opinion. Like the “ hit yourself in the face”. Thing. I actually say in the vid that I agree with most of his points.
There're no practical weapons, a weapon is a weapon, you can either know how to use it or not. Let's say that in the table there's a gun, a pistol, but it's unloaded and I don't know how to load it because I never used one before. Does that make the pistol an unpractical weapon?
@@gr8ful4tori1 well yes, an unloaded gun can still be used to threaten people, but if you have no knowledge of using the nunchucks you would look like a fool.
I have no idea how shad found it within himself to just keep doubling down on his bad takes. He got response videos from actual experts, who demonstrated how effective nunchucks actually are with tests, and somehow he just kept making hour+ long videos about how he was right.
Saying you can give an untrained warrior a stick and they can fight immediately with it is hilarious. Saying that they only have to train to use nunchaku was mind bottling 😂
Great video man, i'm always surprised of how many people do critic martial arts without knowing the real practice of them, and instead going with the things they see in movies or exhibitions. I practice a few martial arts, my main training is bujinkan, always the comments are from what people see in ninja movies and a lot of Naruto hahaha. Keep the good training my friend.
You kinda missed bis point though. He was saying, that it is really easy to hit yourself when you are hitting a moving Target as it gets less and less predictable. You were hitting a still bag, so it is gar easierto predict where it swings Back. If your Opponent moves though this aint working that way.
when the nunchuck hits a target it's going to encounter resistance. after the initial impact force has been absorbed the targets resistance force pushes against the nunchuck and the striking end bounces of ending the strike prematurely. with a stick, the rigidity of the construction pushes the resistance force onto your hand, but since your hand is continuously pushing forward you can more easily counter this resisting force and push furth continuing the initial impact into a crushing motion that can go deeper into the targets body. this is why the stick hits with more force. its strike doesn't end prematurely.
An object once in motion remains in motion... unless it stops "prematurely"...? Even better, you talk about applying force to counter resistance... as a means of applying force...? The amount of force you apply changes based off what you hit...? I think the math of that is funnier than the physics. Glad I got to see this great joke.

But my complaint with Shad was Basic Physics.... And given his love for HEMA he forgot to compare a Trebuchet to a basic catipult... The T uses the same idea as Nunchucks.... Multiple pivot points = more SPEED at point of impact. It's why sword or Stick users SNAP their wrist at time of impact... Why u try to hit with Top1/3 of the weapon
A ''stick'' 10:54 You don't walk through the Walmart parking lot, or in Walmart lol, (etc) carrying a 3' (1 meter) stick in your pocket. So if you encounter an assailant, you just command them to wait while you go to your car and retrieve it, or your long sword, they should oblige. lol
No, but you can have a baton. Retractable ones exist. The thing about 'The Stick' stance Shad has is it makes sense. A baton (aka 'a stick') requires far less finesse to strike someone and strike effectively. Nunchuku and other flail weapons, even if you use it as 'simply' as this video describes and not the hollywood flashy style, the weapon's effectiveness worsens immensely in restrictive spaces such as a dark alleyway. If you can't swing the nunchuku around as easily you lose a lot of oomph you could of had otherwise while with a baton you aren't nearly as restricted. PLUS you gain the benefit of being able to thrust with it while flail weapons aren't nearly as good for that. Not to mention the sheer defensive upside flails don't have simply by being a solid item, not divided by chain which you can use to block incomming blows. And a stick is far less energy intensive than a weapon that requires you to have to spin it all around to gain any sort of meaningful momentum to deal some damage while simultaneously leaving you wide open. Plus you don't need to practice in a backyard or training area to handle a baton like you would other super specialized weapon like chaku or other martial arts weaponry. Practicality is generally what Shad mentions in his videos. The energy/effort to pay off for a weapon like this is just not as worth while as a basic stick or even a baseball bat. Especially when you can get MORE force with less cost with two handing a bat or something. In a fight a nunchaku user, I could imagine, would be more tired than someone using almost any other melee weapon because they're always on the defensive, constantly swinging/twirling the nunchuku/retracting the weapon for aa nother blow if they miss while a stick can parry with less effort than the flail user having to literally dodge every blow because their weapon isn't exactly ideal for deflecting blows.
@@TaskMaster5 The topic wasn't collapsible batons. It is true that nunchucks take a lot more training time, there is no doubt about that , and you need very little training to bash someone's head with a rock or a hammer. Shad's statements that chucks are Stupid and it is a Rubbish Weapon are as close to Troll, Clickbait as any youtube video title and proclamation, he has no idea how to use them as a weapon he made that clear. A dark alleyway is ample room to do anything you'd like with nunchucks, the fact that the 'flashy style' isn't what you should rely on in a self defense situation is very clear to anyone that is good with them as a self defense weapon. Flash and combative skills with Chucks are completely different genres of chucks, though someone skilled at both is not a bad thing, I'm not good with flash, though I like and appreciate those that are, it's cool to watch.
shadiversity used a rubber dummy for demonstration hence the nunchucks bounces off of it like a ball. he forgot that the human body is not "bouncy" like a rubber dummy. one hit from a nunchuck can be very damaging because of the centrigugal force generated
Excellent. And although I didn’t mention that in the video. I did put it in a reply to another comment. Someone started dropping this complicated physics explanation on me about nunchucks vs stick. @@Meatisfood You can’t generate as much centrifugal force with a stick / very little. As it’s generated when things spin around and around. However. We are talking semantics here,

A good weapon doesn't need years of training to be used effectively. You're proving "you" can use it well. Good for you. But do you think it's better than a stick? A plain weapon, legal, and easier to access and even an average Joe can defend himself effectively using it.
Eh, I don't know. Sticks are more versatile and easier to use imo. You don't have to "avoid" getting smacked in the face either. As for power, just watch Baseball.
How in hell something you just bash, feint and block with is more versatile than one you can bash, grab, flick, feint and block with? I guess you believe that having a injury demanding restorative plastic surgery is "no big deal" either.
@@vksasdgaming9472 you can't block with a Nunchuck. Rather you can't block effectively with a string compared to solid hardwood. PS: there's a reason why most weapons are based off a stick, not a nunchuck.

@@Meatisfood You can indeed do all of those. Shit, those forms and stances were originally made for sticks jn the first place. I don't understand how people think a swinging lump of wood is better than a solid structure. Like, hello? Historical Warfare?
Dang it. I found my way into the Shad nunchuck videos somehow. And once again, I can't get back to work until I vomit my thoughts onto the internet. Shad's main point is this: If you were in a Matrix style weapon selection room to prepare for a fight, would you choose the nunchucks over other weapons? I know I wouldn't. But there are flaws with his analsis. 1. He has a child-like understanding of force and damage. The ability to knock a target over says nothing about force and damage. You can push over a Century bag with a shove of your arm. You can shove a person without damaging them. Conversely, a bullet can kill someone without knocking them over (they'll drop dead, but the bullet isn't knocking them over). Shad is that guy in the gym getting a big head because he can knock a Century bag over with his pushing punches and kicks or taking advantage of the momentum built in the bag from the strikes. There are different types of power and damage. Nunchuks can do penetrating force ("going through the target") but are also used for rebounding force (like most boxing punches, hit the target bounce back into guard). Mr. Wushu Engineer, on his channel, found Chucks and Stick to be equal in damage output when using the same penetrating strike. But the biggest omission is asking why nunchucks were invented. What problem were they created to solve. Yes, it's likely some guy thought they would generate more power from the swing and windup (Wushu Engineer proved this does not happen). But, China has alot of whip-like weapons. Why? I think the reason is that in China one-on-one fights don't happen. People often jump into any altercation and gang up on people. Chinese do not enter fights alone, and rarely does a fight stay one-on-one. I think the whip weapons exist to keep opponents at bay when surrounded. Now, I don't do CMA, but when I look at it, it seems alot of Chinese martial arts is created with the idea that you're fighting multiple opponents. If nothing else, being able to do wide, easy swings to keep away a bunch of people is something Nunchucks can do that Stick cannot. And in three videos, Shad never mentioned this.
Nunchucks are not a practical self-defense tool nor are they a practical weapon. They are however a very entertaining and effective hand-eye coordination training tool. AKA, a martial arts tool.

@@vanivanov9571 first off, hitting yourself in the leg with an axe is possible when you are chopping wood, not actually swinging for someones head.
This is how it goes: noob is going to get hit. By what and how is impossible to predict.

YEEESSSSSSS! As martial arts instructor myself i have been saying this stuff for years!!
And it falls on deaf ears..lol
so it looks like he's turned the nunchucks into a traditional flail.
This is great even though I don't 100% agree with all the points but damn you are super respectful and are just great keep up the work man.
Thank you sir.
I feel like if someone had those intentions, they would get as close as possible with their weapon, they've got the jump on you.
I think that the NUNCHUCKS were the answer in Asia, to the distance fight against soldiers with armor, as was the mace with chain in medieval Europe. In this sense, it is understood that the movements are more distant and powerful, not so much acrobatics.
There is a stick nunchaku as well - it's a metal stick and it unscrew to become a nunchaku. A friend of mine had one at Uni.
Those are cool
I picked one up recently, but still prefer the traditional ones.
@ohiograssman1564 There's something about the traditional hard wood nunchaku...it just looks the part. When I was young, I preferred the metal telescopic ones, but they don't look as cool.
it Actually Help me To Training a little bit Brother.. thank you So Much!! i'm pretty new using Nunchucks!
Yes.. i would choose them over a plain old stick any day.
@@IronBodyMartialArts yep! And also if you don't have monster joints the flail weapon allows you to use a lot of force without carrying the stress on arm joints which will be subjected to similar forces of any stick 😆
Where did you get those telescoping nunchucks my guy? I need them

Tonfa
Stick
Knife
Baton
Short sword.
Good luck running into any of those in every day situations lol
I watched shades vids and enjoy his work. But a "Real" Martial artist he may not be. Imo I've seen what a trained man can do with the Chucks
What classifies as "a real martial artist"? Cuss he has many years of martial arts training in HEMA
Watch his latest video! That's all I'm going to say!
I mean his main point is that NUNCHUCKS are a worst weapon on comparision to others because they require training to make the holder more lethal. Whilst others no, for example a stick.
They are weapons? Yes
He's just saying they are not as good as others.
@Bullycider And asian martial arts are for weebs. Now we have both been childish
@@aslakjacobsen1517 He don't have many years of HEMA behind him...
This is one of the most well thought out, tempered and measured responses to anything on the internet.
Disclaimer, i came here because of shadvercities nunchuck videos.
i think shads biggest issue is he continues to try to use the nunchuck like a stick, which it is not.
he practiced the nunchucks for a shortish time as a teenager, like a yearish
and yea, i agree with your point that he should know that he should know that tools have to be used a certain way, what they are designed for.
but he side steps this argument with the argument that one doesnt need experience to form an informed opinion, as that can form an opinion through observation and second hand research.
Appreciate you stopping by brother!
You are a worrior brother.
Sorry for viewing so late but enjoyed the video!
oh and at 3:13 that looked quite funny haha
I think he was trying to show it shouldn't hit yourself if held properly. Isolated and out of context does look funny tho
@@vksasdgaming9472 Probably the reason is because other weapons can offer certain things the Spear and Shield can't or do it better...like range (Bow/Crossbow), CQC (Swords), Against Armor (Halberd which is just a stick with extra/Mace)
Unlike nunchucks atleast which almost any weapon can do it's job
@@90enemies So what is job of it? I find it very implausible that something with proven combat effectiveness is inferior when compared to everything.
(Edit: Foudn the video but I was mistaken it's a Flail vs Mace ua-cam.com/video/L3MonegdQJ8/v-deo.html)
For your "I find it very implausible that something with proven combat effectiveness is inferior when compared to everything." a Rock is also a historically proven and effective combat weapon, but you and I both know a rock is Inferior to almost every weapon we can think off.
That out of the way, yes nunchaku is "Proven in Combat" but most of those cases are against Unarmed opponent and at that point any weapon is good against an unarmed Opponent (At least I'm talking from the examples I've been given like that Homeowner attacking a guy with Nunchaku)
As for real Combat, yes they're makeshift weapons originally, but one thing to note is *They didn't last very long* there's barely records of Nunchuck being used in Real Warfare compared to a Club or sharpened Stick.
Excellent points.
@@IronBodyMartialArts Case in point with embellishment: ua-cam.com/video/1InIKzeGKtY/v-deo.html
Exactly. I guess. No one can really tell you what works or doesn’t. You can make it work. But it’s a numbers game.
You make good points. Nunchuck brings considerable versatility like concealability and intimidation, apart from simple brute force.
Fast acceleration and unpredictable angles are even better.
I like your point of the whipping motion, because the tip of the nunchucks seems to accelerate considerably faster than a stick. Atleast it it would with me holding a stick, maybe someone with more stick experience can move just as fast
You can do the whipping motion with a stick too though for a very similar result.
Great comment thread and i agree with your first point,,
Thanks for putting the time to make such an engaging comment..
Good argument. I don’t understand the argument that they bounce off. If you strike through they keep going just fine.
Pulled this from internet, can anyone enlighten if it’s accurate?
“Its (nunchaku) intended use is as a training weapon, since it allows the development of quicker hand movements and improves posture.”
“It was not a historically popular weapon because it was ineffective against the most widely used weapons of that time such as samurai swords and naginata, and few historical techniques for its use still survive.”
I hope.

Such an underated channel
But honestly it does look very heavy and unpredictable, which will not be a popular choice in combat sports (if their is such a sport)
I am preparing my body for battle soon, since I feel great shame for my hocky pokey martial arts master long ago.

Yea they are shit, i hate them. But,, they still beat a stick..
It is like a guy in Allgemeine SS-uniform shitting on Wailing Wall and claiming that he did not mean to insult anybody.
You mean one hour is too much training to use them with sufficient skill to smash someone's skull?
I appreciate the video Brett. Shad walked the kobudo community back a step or two

Still. Nothing against the guy.

Shad makes a lot of points, but even he exaggerates at times. He seems to have a huge issue with double headed or flail type weapons for safety reasons. While some double head weapons are seemingly useless, I suppose it really does depends on how you use the weapon though.
Man makes the weapon as always. There is not enough man in Shitiversity to make anything a weapon.
Good point.
I would argue that even a unloaded pistol is more effective than chucks in the hands of a untrained individual.

The amount of force you apply changes based off what you hit...?

a 3' (1 meter) stick in your pocket. So
if you encounter an assailant, you just
command them to wait while you go to
your car and retrieve it, or your long sword,
they should oblige.
In a fight a nunchaku user, I could imagine, would be more tired than someone using almost any other melee weapon because they're always on the defensive, constantly swinging/twirling the nunchuku/retracting the weapon for aa nother blow if they miss while a stick can parry with less effort than the flail user having to literally dodge every blow because their weapon isn't exactly ideal for deflecting blows.

and ; ''as a weapon they are utter garbage''.
I mean come on , true that no one wants the wrath
of his million subscribers, but lets be real, he couldn't have
been more insulting to nunchakus.
What was he doing? Venting frustration. Keeping vicious cycle going. Trying to appear tough by following mainstream.
I see the bord you used (the item I dont remember what it was called but were upset about ) but I saw cuts through the structure of the bord. Im not really sure if thats full honesty. Sorry gor your lost. I'll see if you have more to show.
Yea bro. It was a well used Makiwara Board but still intact.
Obvious people can see it’s condition before and after it was struck.
It was completely shattered.
But yes. I could get a new one and smash that. But I don’t have the money for that. Lol
I think the point was made. That’s all
Fantastic video! There are far too many “experts” talking about the efficacy of nunchaku who learned everything they know from Kung fu movies.
Then there are plane ass people like you and me, just training in the background. :).
Nunchuck
A stick would be better
Bo staff, I've seen Kali practioners being taken out, dude rushed him and just kicked him in the chest, I'd prefer a lock in a sock, it's the preferred weapon of hells angels
Sorry for viewing so late but enjoyed the video!
cool vid and well said
Thanks mate. For listening.
A good weapon doesn't need years of training to be used effectively. You're proving "you" can use it well. Good for you. But do you think it's better than a stick? A plain weapon, legal, and easier to access and even an average Joe can defend himself effectively using it.
@ben esterberg but two sticks would be better than 1 nunchuck and takes the same space on the body.
@@brandonbush528 Wrong. About 30 cm stick is practically useless as anything but weapon for mugger.
@@vksasdgaming9472 but 60 cm with 4 cm of string is?
@@brandonbush528 It is over twice as long, sonny.
@@MaliciousMollusc You can actually do all those mentioned by VK's with a stick. I do not think that nunchaku is garbage, but stick would be my choice.
@@Meatisfood You can indeed do all of those. Shit, those forms and stances were originally made for sticks jn the first place.
I don't understand how people think a swinging lump of wood is better than a solid structure. Like, hello? Historical Warfare?
@@MaliciousMollusc 😁
nice moves, great vid, many thanks.
Ask American police about them. They might give you completely different answer. Repeating old myths retold as new lies is not a good "argument", kid.
@@vksasdgaming9472 Don't you have anything better to than harass commenters with your idiotic arguments, failed logic, and projected criticisms? Like seriously, just accept you're own flaws, quit accusing others of being at fault when you're the only one wrong, and quite bothering people.
@@wilcoxway Stop projecting yourself, kid. It really does not help you. You are still even more wrong than I thought you could be.

Made my own response video as well: ua-cam.com/video/ZupWlyxdA_A/v-deo.html
Compared to a stick(staff) nunchucks are garbage as a weapon. I say that as someone who has used them since 1979. Even your video shows how many times it bounces back and can cause injury to yourself. Any weapon that has that much chance of self damage is GARBAGE in real combat
If they are that garbage, why have you bothered training them since 1979. Also i was never hit by the chucks during my demo.. that was the point.
Personally i would prefer a staff any day.. but there are circumstances where a chuck may be beneficial..
Ultimately, what anyone wants to prefer or not,, i dont mind..
@@IronBodyMartialArts working out with nunchucks is a good cardio workout, so is using dumbbells but both are crap weapons.. that is the point. Anything can be used AS a weapon but that does not mean they are Good weapons..
@@ronblah8538 Dumbell a bad weapon? They can be very heavy and concentrate it very efficiently. 2kg dumbell (kiddy weight) smashes bones easily.
@@vksasdgaming9472 about the same way ROCK is a weapon. The POINT is anything can be a weapon but that doesn’t make it a Good weapon. Can you not understand this fundamental point?

11:40 , I'd have to look that up, but I bet

Leave it up to the Japanese to overcomplicate a stick.
