Ashermann Syndrome is a complication of the uterus where the Uterine Cavity or the Endometrium is obliterated either completely or partially due to adhesions of the uterine walls.
In India, the most common causative factor of these adhesions is the history of endometrial TB or Previous curretting due to a history of an abortion. In both these situations, in some cases, the endometrial layer gets damaged and it causes adhesions which leads to obliteration of the Uterine Cavity.
The typical symptoms are amenorrhea and infertility. Both of them can be severe in cases of Ashermann syndrome. As a patient, one must be aware that there is no medical management which exists for a patient with Ashermann Syndrome.
In this Masterclass, Dr Jay Mehta has elucidated the role of a correct Hysteroscopic surgery in the accurate management of Ashermann Syndrome. This surgery when done with Hysteroscopy requires a tremendous skill set with a solid understanding of the uterine anatomy.
In some cases, one may need to supplement the uterine cavity with the insertion of Autologous Stem Cells in the uterine cavity to ensure a regeneration inside the cavity.
