- I got this thing in the mail this afternoon. It really is the missing link between the Odhner-style desktop calculators and the electric machines soon to follow.
Turns out it had been languishing next to a smoker for however long, so it was full of incredibly stubborn dust and detritus. Not to mention the smell. A few tender blasts of compressed air and some oil later it works like a charm. You also get to hear the charming sound and see the story behind yet another scratch on my living room table.

I have a couple of very similar machines but slightly more modern in design.
The larger of the two version has a Japanese brand name on the box and it's in virtually unused condition.
The other smaller machine is jammed and I can't figure out how to release it.
Never let your nephews think it's a toy.

One day I would like to lend one to a kid for that exact purpose. It would be great.
This thing weighs 7 kg though, so not too small of a kid...

The fact that it is the size of a small till might alert someone and aint exactly quiet
This turns into a god damn screaming nightmare after 4 minutes. Those cranks are the noisiest sounds! Fuck I hated it!
The 'R' from what I have read was the last version of the Manus, and it stands for 'Rueckuebertragung' or back-transfer.
Oh, that's interesting. I always thought it was a model number. :)

I could probably get the answer faster with a pen and a paper but mechanical computation is so fascinating that i just want to open this baby and see how it works

Hi. So glad to hear you've found a liking for these neat machines! The Hamann machines come out of Germany, so I would recommend looking for it on ebay's German site, there's usually a variety of things there. The Hamann Manus R isn't the most common machine, so it may take some waiting, but it's well worth it for a truly unique machine.

Yeah. An unfortunate trait of the camera's buit-in microphone is that the amplifier is of rather poor quality, so I get crazy amounts of noise. This video was worse than the others in that regard, so I had to crank noise reduction way up in post.
This unfortunately attracted the attention of Dark Lord Au'dacthity.
