Between the Lions: "When Two Vowels Go Walking"

- Here's one of the most popular songs ever from PBS's ten-time-Emmy-winning literacy education series, "Between the Lions." "When Two Vowels Go Walking" presents the well-known rule about long vowel sounds in peppy, pop fashion, with lyrics by Sarah Durkee, music by Christopher Cerf, and a nice vocal turn from Paul Jacobs (with Sarah Durkee helping out). Check it out!
TBH, when I watched this when I watched an episode of _Between the Lions,_ I actually thought the music video was well animated and that the song was good. And of course, when I heard my teacher say "when two vowels, the first one does the talking," it sounded familiar, and I found out I heard it from _BTL._ So many memories.
Childhood memories right there!❤
I agree with you Darnee1458.
The second graders in my split class got to sing this for their program! I loved hearing it every day.
I used to watch between the lions when I was such a young kid!! with this show I learned the English I speak today!! Thank you Between the Lions! :)
I was a young immigrant when I first saw this. Two decades later it still rings in my head when I teach english.
Great song! Great lyrics! Very well done! Thanks for sharing!
This was my jam as a child
i'm 15 and i still love this song! (believe me, there aren't many things i love), but this song and between the lions in general is probably the best thing humans ever came up with! Many grateful thanks from me for posting this video.
I agree! It's the best show. It's very enjoyable for both children and adults. The writers have a great sense of humor. :)
Wow, a catchy tune that really helps decode some of those tricky vowel digraphs! FANTASTIC! Thanks for sharing!
This song is so catchy omg!!!!!!
I Love this song!
I'm surprised this kids video has their comments open.
Me too
I appreciate it😊!
That's very simple and clear explaining! Thank you!
Very catchy song. i listen to it every day. i love this song!! :)
I raised my kids on PBS and then when I started having grandchildren, they were raised on it, too. The best thing that ever happened to PBS Kids was the advent of Between The Lions. Great songs, great messages, great fun....
I love Paul Jacobs and Sarah Durkee.
I love this song!
Love this song I used to sing it in kindergartner
this is real fresh, really learned something today.
by the looks of the animating it looks like this show has its 50th aniversarry
I used to always draw an "a" with a bow because of this!
A fun little tune and educational!
Oh the nostalgia back when things were better and reading was a good way😢😢😮😮😮😮😅😅😅😅
I remember this from when I was first trying to read.🙂😇
I've been looking everywhere for this! I miss this show so much! This would help me so much in like 2nd grade! Ah, memories
I love Between The Lions and its songs. I show that song my niece and she liked it
For reasons that are unknown, the A always feels a certain type of way when a certain letter gets to speak and she doesn't.
I sang this in English class. Now that's how everyone remembers.
In my opinion,
This song is better than those other Between The Lions songs!
I used to be a volunteer reading helper in schools. I had just taught one of my students this rule and she was nailing it. Then she got out her book...about soup. Had to do some really quick explaining about exceptions after that!
Is there a rhyme about the exceptions?
I love this song so much I learned it in 2nd grade I missed so I played it❤❤❤
How's this for a verse?
When two vowels go walkin',
The first one does the talkin'.
In *rye*, you hear the Y, but not the E.
In *fruit*, you hear the U.
The I has zilch to do.
The second one, you don't hear, though you see.
Yes, the two of them together,
in *glue* and *true* and *blue*.
The U speaks up, the E does not (But...) Shh! I'm tellin' U! (Get it?)
Dude.... How long did u think of dis? 0_0
I wish I could remember.
Ricky M racing
Ricky M you’re so silly!
I Love It! I will include it in the song for my son
I love this
Thank you for sharing!
“But!”
“Shh! Let me explain.”
What a betrayal.

I remember the math teacher used to play this song back in 3rd grade.

Play it every day at school. kids love it. Daym I can never get any COOL ADULT songs stuck in my head....having said that now I shall always remember what a vowel is :P hheh
@JewlTonz Good idea, Jewl!
Also occasionally featured in Between The Lions is "Vowel Boot Camp." The only problem I have with this song is that it just uses A, E, I, O, U, and Sometimes Y. I have always taught the vowel sounds as sometimes including W (as in know, show, blow, throw).
And, vorephilia is correct that English is a difficult language (mostly because it's a polyglut of words gathered from hundreds of different languages and dialects [
with their pronunciationa often intact].)
I herd this song in class and the holl class sings it very loud
Love it
Perfect excellent very very very very very

I Love This Song Came out 2009
Nifty! This will be great fo my English students! Thanks for posting it!
It would have been super, though, if they hadn't left out some interesting bits:
- diptongs which do not sound like either of the vowels that make them up, such as "OO", "OU/OW", "AU/AW".
- "y" is not a vowel.

Wow I remember this in 2nd grade...
English is filled with exceptions, this is one of them. This rule is the norm, but that doesn't make it false.
I wish you the best in your studies.
She is trying to grab my tablet 😸

Omg I haven't seen this since I'm was in prep who Else?
@Babatunde Disu Those do not count because in such cases, those two vowels are in separate syllables. It only counts in this case if they share the same syllable. That is pretty much why "science" doesn't follow the "I before E except after C" rule: because "CI" is in one syllable, and the E... well, E's, are in the next.
The episode is "The Goat in the Coat"
