  • Just minutes before 106 year-old Virginia McLaurin got to fulfill her dream of meeting President Obama before he spoke at the Black History Month Reception, we caught up with her in the Red Room to reflect on the historic nature of that very moment. Here's what she had to say.
"I am so happy to be in the White House, and to see the president, the black president, the first one. I was born in South Carolina, and I was raised up on a sharecrop. And after I grew up in South Carolina, my parents moved to Raleigh, where we could go, where I was living in South Carolina we could go no higher than eighth grade and then you have to go some place else to go to school. So we moved to Raleigh, North Carolina. So then I grew up there, ran away from home, and got married."
