The Hyundai Veloster R-Spec is an evolution in Hyundai's learning to build a hot hatch in real time. The standard Veloster is a cheap econobox in a funky suit; and the Turbo model adds speed but little else. With the new R-Spec, the entire rear suspension architecture is redesigned for significantly improved body control; better wheels and tires are standard, as is a short shift kit, and you get other tweaks and trim bits, all packaged in one of the cheapest hot-hatches around.
In this video, I comment on the poor placement of a wire from an ECU above the pedal box, which blocks my foot's movement. I note it in the video, but again, this is not an error in design or placement, rather, the tie-down which should hold the wire, has broken in my test car.
Hyundai of North America provided the vehicle, insurance, and a tank of fuel for this review.
This car is outstanding looking and driving! I’m super impress at how affordable this vehicle is and I hope it’s a sales success.
I went from a 15 civic Si to one of these. The new civic just didn’t feel as fun to drive as my older one and the veloster felt more fun and was significantly cheaper. I know where I’m at in Canada the veloster turbo is 27k new while the Si is 36k it’s a 9k premium and at the Si price you can move up to the Hyundai Veloster N
*Company decides to continue producing manual cars for the fun of driving* Matt “clutch is too assisted and engine hangs revs” damned if you do damned if you don’t I suppose!
Not at all. It's a thank you for offering a manual but a no thanks because their manuals suck.
My WRX had thee worse rev hang i ever experienced. Worse than a 2020 Si. It eventually became a deal breaker for me. My type R has it as well but no where near as bad or as noticeable.
Get rid of rev hang and maybe clutch assist and you won't hear me complain.
Do they make leather underwear?
BILL STACK you might was some ball powder to go with them if hey do.
Leather bag to carry your ball powder. That is something that every man needs.
Are you going to the Blue Oyster?
@@drgonzo767 what's that?
@BILL STACK: It has the best salad bar in town.
Just wait until the 'N' version. The i30N in Europe rocks, hopefully so will the Veloster N.

Yeah, I got excited until I figured out this didn't have the 2.0T.
They have a long way to go yet. Their build quality has gotten better but they still don’t last that long (like they barely survive the warranty period) plus half of the people who buy them treat them like the throw away cars they used to be (and in some aspects still are). The engine recall is not a confidence booster (been out since last November. Covers 2.0l and 2.4l, their most used car engines).
CamaroAmx Approaching 32k on my Elantra Sport and it's been to the dealer 3 times: once for my free oil change after purchase, and two other times for alignments after I made some suspension changes. Zero problems otherwise and I beat the hell out of it in the canyons. Absolutely love it.
CamaroAmx My 2007 V6 sonata sais your telling lies. Is it a great car? No. Is it a very good appliance wuth impeccible reliability , yep.
One feature I like about the big drivers door is the pillar is not blocking your sight over your shoulder when you’re 5’10” and above and have to push the seat back. One of the drawbacks of you like to stretch your legs on the GTI and other small four doors.
Hyundai is definitely on the improve! The i30N is a awesome little car and i’m sure the N version of this will be too
USAnians don't get i30N
N stands for Namyang and Nürburgring. I found this:
''The ‘N’ in Hyundai N stands for Namyang, home to Hyundai Motor’s global R&D Centre in Korea since 1995, where the idea was born, and for the Nürburgring, home to Hyundai Motor’s European Test Centre, where the i30 N was further developed and tested.''
Source: www.hyundai.news/eu/model-news/what-is-hyundai-n/
Issue with the N is going to be the price. I’m hesitant to say that hyundai can compete with a Civic Type R, Focus RS, Golf R, etc. in that price range
On the improve but I feel like we have said that for a decade now...they keep improving but so does the competition. I like this car but little things like the cable issue Matt brought up are telling
SHOULD be priced less than all those. Plus besides the Golf R, those get marked up a ton. If you watch some Australian car reviews on the i30N it seems as though it currently is at least the most fun for it's price if not the best. In Europe you can get the i30n for basically the same price as a new gti, and it demolishes it in every way except maybe interior quality and comfort.
I have the 2016 VT manual, and after installing a clutch switch mod, and turning traction control off when I get in the car, the rev hang is gone, the car feels slightly quicker, and it drives SO MUCH BETTER

THANK YOU!!!!

You need to film in Ojai. You have 3 awesome options in terms of routes: hwy 33 into the Los Padres Nat’l Forest, and Hwy 150 which heads in 2 directions: West into Carpenteria, and East into Santa Paula. All 3 options are awesome drives for sports cars. You won’t be the only one hooping about, trust me.
I thought Matt doesn't do One Takes anymore?
He said something along the lines of still doing press cars.
Yeah, he'll do the manufacturer's press cars. Zack does the viewers rides.
"It hangs revs like all the other modern sub-50k cars do" there, I fixed it for you.
VW ain’t too bad but, yeah.
na he stated pretty clearly it's much worse in this car than the GTI and FoST
which other cars rev hang as much as Hyundais? They've had this issue for years and it's pretty shameful that it hasn't been resolved in production.
Rogue Racing I haven't driven the hyundai, but every other modern car I've driven suffers from rev hang for emissions requirements, quick list: GTI, FoST, FiST, Civic Si, WRX. The cheaper base models of those cars do too, as well as the more expensive versions (although I haven't driven the current GolfR, RS, Type-R or STI personally). Furthermore many of them have delay valves in the clutch hydraulics which further interrupt shift times. Although rev hang can be tuned out, a tune voids your warranty, and delay valves can't be tuned out. Other issues, like crappy throttle mapping, can also be tuned out, as all modern cars in this price range have crap throttle mapping too, but again, warranty voided.
so you haven't driven the hyundai but you're going to make an assumption and state it as a fact, while "correcting" someone at the same time. nice
I don't remember the one that I drove to have rev hang when shifting. The suspension was so comfortable and sorted. Fun car to drive with the R spec package.
To fix hanging revs you don't need a tune , its a simple on/off switch install connected to the cruise control module. Or you could just disconnect cruise control if you don't use it often.
My Turbo R-Spec is amazing. The only downside is the roads where i live suck and i cant enjoy the car as much as i want to
There’s a plug under the dash in driver’s footwell that can be unplugged and will almost eliminate rev hang. Only downsides are the gear indicator will not show and cruise control will be disabled.
I had NO CLUE this thing could be cheaper than a FiST. I'm actually impressed, I thought these things were mid 20s, but a VT for 19k? Wow...
fiST has become pretty popular and hard to find but watching this video i can assure you this car will NOT ever be able to keep up with a fiesta st on those roads. you can see the slight oversteer and hes not even pushing it. fiesta drives like its on rails. literally left me feeling ill after some twisty roads.
It's like Bob Ross doing a driving video. "Okay, now we're going to drive into these happy clouds."
Yikes on the wires hanging down. Glad they are aware of it.
Cars like this are fun entry level rides
I must admit, I've never been a huge fan of Korean cars. But recently, I've been more and more impressed by what they have been putting out. Especially the new N cars. Definitely worth considering now.
But if I was after a normal i30 or something similar, I'd still go buy a Mazda 3 myself.
I like the big doors, don't have pillar blocking my fish eyes when I'm checking out the left side blind spot.
4:38 FRANKLINS HOUSE!!!!
They are going to have the Veloster N coming, I think it's personally a mistake. They should have brought the i30N here instead (same as our Elantra GT hatch) and call it the Elantra GT N or something. There is just so much more practicality in 4 doors and a hatch.
Agreed, I wish that Hyundai offered the i30N in the States. European pricing on that thing, though, puts it in with the Type R, WRX STI and just above the top trim GTI.... and well above the Focus ST. Ouch.
In Australia the Focus ST is $53k, Type R 54k, Golf R 55k, WRX Sti starts at 50k (55k for premium model), and i30N is $40k, same as base model WRX. The top trim GTI is 48k.
Hyundai have also said they expect prices to drop on the i30N to 35k within a few years. Once they make more of them i presume and get the manufacturing process streamlined. I image in 2 years i30N 35k, and veloster N 37k. Just based on the prices of the SR now.
Holy crap, those are serious prices and well above what's being asked in the US if the $ values are in Australian dollars.
The N will run right around 30k for the performance upgraded model
New cars here, Euros especially, are double US. The US dollar is much higher right now though. So 40k for an i30N in Australia is similar to 30kUS for the same car.
I love that you chose who sponsors your video. I'm glad you chose a leather company that supports ethical working conditions, since I know a lot of leather companies use sweatshop style factories to make their products.

I sold my 2012 NA veloster last November to get a 2012 Ford Ranger XLT 3.2 turbo diesel and going from that to what I now. I really hope they go further but I won't get back to them until then, I enjoyed my time with my Veloster but I needed more power and where I live here in Australia I needed a four-wheel drive to be able to get to where I need to go to certain places that a non four-wheel drive vehicle could not go to but I'm really happy to hear that Hyundai are still in the game with the Veloster.
They should offer a simple way to "turn off" rev hang / rev matching.
Let me find out I need to go back to Hyundai lol, not really but their on the come up!
Wish they still produced the Genesis platform, I miss my 3.GREAT🙌🏽
PJ Morrison the genesis sedan is still going strong. The coupe is dead, but they are supposed to come back out with anther genesis coupe eventually.
The stinger is the closest you’ll get right now to a rwd sporty anything from Hyundai or Kia.
The genesis coupe will return but theres a good chance it's going to be under the Genesis brand and not Hyundai. As for the g80 the new was just spotted testing a few days ago so we can expect to see the new version of that next year.
Wish we got the Genesis coupe here.
Yours sincerely, a salty Aussie

Three Doors Down?
I putting this on my veloster
Says he likes quality above all else.......shows white ikea couch right next to his brown leather couch.....
The rev hang can’t be completely tuned tuned out, but it can be reduced through tuning and with a lightweight flywheel. Most tuners will increase the deceleration fuel cutoff delay to make the pops and burbles sound, but if you do this you can actually increase rev hang. Setting DFCO delay to 0 and setting the cars DFCO RPM higher will reduce this. Also, adding in negative ignition timing (for a pop and crackle sort of sound) actually makes revs fall faster. With the combination of my tune edits and my fly wheel revs fell too fast to shift comfortably, so I actually had to program delay back in. It can be done, but most haven’t actually taken the time to do it right.
Nah fr? Means I can have a Veloster N without the 275 HP??? 😂 I'm planning on getting a Veloster turbo ultimate or r spec soon and I have plans to do some basic tuning on it.
Honda Civic si rev hangs like a mother. It's just the way these cars come.
Im glad somebody else is noticing the rev hang. Especially from 1st to 2nd...unless you wanna just punish it to go fast you have to be so gentle with that shift. But i got no problem being smooth with that clutch. Maybe im used to shitty cars but I think the clutch is great. The one thing i dont like about that car is that the passenger door side has a window. The driver side...viewport...is a portal at best. The blindspot from 9-6 is huge and they knew it an put a blind spot mirror in the drivers side mirror. The slit in the back isnt great either. All that said, I love my R spec.
That road! What I’d give to have something like that in Chicago! Lol
I got mine up to 285 hp without any internal mods still only 30000 miles way more fun havnt found a way to fix rev though I does hamper performance got better tires softer kumos makes it hard to break traction in corners but all around fun car fastest grocery car in norfolk va for sure got mine with all the bells and whistles in interior makes it comfy for trips and pretty decent on gas considering 11 on a 1/4 mile

This road looks like so much fun
The lines of the newest veloster seem more refined compared to their first iteration in my opinion.
deedler5687 still can't get the rear end right though which sucks because the front is actually a really good looking car
Hyundai always have the problem with rev hang because of a spring in slave cylinder that needs to be taken out. Not sure if it's still the same with veloster, but every manual hyundai I have driven in the past I took the spring out.
I like this car but I just bought a brz and couldn’t be happier with the choice
i work valet and some hyundais are pretty nice. They just dont have the parts and tuning community as say honda or toyota. Hence, who will want to buy one if theyre looking for something they can mod. Really impressed by the genesis coupe v6 even though they dont get a lot of love.
I felt like I was playing NFS watching this. Very nice driving location 👌🏾
Respect for Hyundai, they've always made "R-Spec" mean something more than most manufacturers do with their "half-performance" trims, and they are keeping up the trend! I've always like the Veloster as a package and concept; glad they're bringing the underlying car up to the promise of its unique design.
It sure does look a whole lot better
This seems like a sweet package for $23k if you don't shop used, probably some good deals on these later in the year.
Engine makes great sounds!
It's not a competitor for the GTI which has 210hp/250ftlbs... It is a competitor for the Civic SI though in almost every area including price. I say almost because the track record of Honda is long and a factor that should be taken into account. Although it can be argued that the Civic SI with a turbo from factory has no track record at all and we will have to see how it shapes up.
As a current owner of the latest gen SI, it keeps up with the GTI despite whatever the numbers may suggest. It’s lighter, less expensive and the layout of the controls feel natural and fluid.
The veloster wouldn’t break? Warranty history says otherwise. I’d at least wait to hear if this veloster’s panoramic sunroof doesn’t shatter randomly. For real.
220/260
My base 5 peed rsx with full bolt ons and types head/cam
Swap makes 215whp
And would smoke this
I'm going to say the Veloster N > GTI. I own a highly modded GTI and got to drive the Veloster N and autocross it, and have a pro driver take it around the track riding passenger. Really impressed by the N. But yeah this Veloster Turbo R doesn't stack up.
Nice review, I have a 2014 V Turbo and probably my biggest issue is the driver door. It is too long, tight parking is a pain. They could easily shorten it and make it symmetrical with the passenger side. Keep it 3 door or go 4, doesn't matter to me.
I own an '18 Elantra Sport with the same engine. I feel the complaints about revs hanging and the clutch being soft are valid and something that I would love to have fixed as well.
This model Veloster is actually attractive doesn’t look like the old turtle shell looking Veloster that first came out.
They fixed the suspension! That's literally the only thing I cared about!!
You can tune the R Spec and easily get 240 whp , fun car !
Everyone talks about the i30 like it's the next godsend of hot hatches, however I still don't see any in North America...
...only made in EU
So it has all the shortcomings of a modern 4 cyl turbos; tiny power band and terrible rev hang. Absolute fun killer.
Thumbs up if you fast forwarded through the intro
They should update Veloster to a proper 4 door, just take the parts from the RHD model and bingo. It will still have coupe looks too.
I have a 2013 turbo, and everything he says is true. Still fun to drive, but I hate the long driver's door. I think they did that to allow people to still climb in/out of the back seat on that side if needed (like you would in a two door).
Minor complaint
Wow stunning views up on Piuma! I loved driving that road back in April!
It actually really annoys me that Hyundai Canada refuses to sell the Veloster R Spec here in Canada people because ya we hot N but we still actually want to have a equilibrium in the middle of the Veloster line up so what the Hell Hyundai Canada please definitely bring us Canadians a R Spec model as well
Neat thing about this... it's lighter and cheaper than the Turbo model... They decidedly anti-porsche'd it.
that was the turbo model
Are you driving in sport mode? It completely changes the car.
Matt - Glad to see you doing One Takes again...I admittedly stopped watching when you handed the project off.
Matt the kind of guy that lives in Agoura Hills. I bet he even eats at Italia deli.
I got my new focus st for $22k, only parts that are needed for it are the aftermarket motor mounts (stock ones are absolute shit) and pedal spacer for proper heel toe. Other than that I've driven it 13k miles since it was new in march and still enjoying it.
Incredible day for a drive
The sneakers reminds of Common Projects achilles low looks pretty nice. The new Veloster is pretty dope too.
The rev hang is an emissions "feature".
They have it tuned like that for better exhaust scavenging, on the decel... Still annoying as hell, but better than the FR-S's torque dip, when it's switching injectors.
IL never undestand how a car company would give the outside a major redesign and add an R to the name and not add at least 15-20 hp..eh watever at least the made it handle better.Hopefully us Americans can get the N one day.Im sure this a great car and good bang for the buck just saying its so weird how you can change a car completely and not give it a few extra ponies
i might have to pick up the white pair of sneaker , i like the silhouette
Hanging Revs is suppose to be a Environmental feature. So it won't spit out un-burnt gas into the atmosphere.
true, but couldn't they have just cut fuel in between shifts to achieve the same?
Those are the littlest deers I’ve ever seen
You know a shoe is good quality when it has a leather sole.
WTF? This car is 19000 in the US? Man, even the entry level hatches are more expensive than that here, not to mention the sports models.
Wicked you’re back in one takes lol
Matt tries to like this car, but it fails on every aspect. Props to him for not totally dumping on the car, must have got some $ from Hyundai.
I don't know who is buying the R when then N is out soon?
We have exactly the same Tumbler!! Kinda hate how the cap’s not water tight tho. Maybe that’s the reason why i got it for 50% off. Have a nice week good sir.
They make another cap with a sliding lid! I had to buy a different Yeti cup with it; couldn't buy it alone, but it's sweet! I have a few lids I rotate through.
FFS ...there's already ads on UA-cam, now we have to watch ads after the ads?
Hey what's happening I've purchase a 2020 Hyundai veloster turbo r spec I've changed out the Mufflers and exhaust tips it's loud enough for me with all the pops gurgling and burbling especially in cold start and I've changed out the spoiler N nowadays it's going to be difficult to find a veloster N they've the kona N and the Elantra N and thanks for sharing your videos with me 😃
9:52 boy you fr said deers
Great review! Is it GDI and if it is how do they deal with intake plumbing issues?
It doesn’t hang revs in the dct automatic and the dct makes the base model better than the automatic one
My dog just ate my leather shoes. Fuckin beef jerky smellin ass shoes!
Hyundai N-word models to have optional Beckett-SImonon perforated leather seats.
Why does it only have 3 damn doors!!! If it had 4 doors, I’d be sold
I would like some of the features of the r spec to get moved to the base turbo to make it a better car and then give the r spec everything from the n spec and remove the n spec. I like a 3 tier setup from cars. The base super cheap one, the mid tier and the expensive race one. Also I think it should come either as a coupe or as a sedan with suicide doors like the Rx8 had.
No, leave N alone. Hyundai N is unique in itself and means much more than "R-Spec". It's like saying remove the Focus RS and keep the Focus ST. Backwards. Just eliminate a base Turbo and you'd be fine.
@9:48 ... Deer alert!
The Veloster N version with the 2.0 L .... is the pick in the new Hyundai range ... test driving one tomorrow!
Wait you're in 7th gear at 6500 rpm going around those cornersm
I prefer the 3 door design. It would just be another 4 door hot hatch if it wasn't for the 3 doors.
Did anyone else notice that he referenced the Stinger GT as one of Hyundai’s performance cars?! Or was that just me lol
Matt "beefy smelling shoes" Farrah
Someone probably mentioned this already but oh well....
The real reason for Velosters 3 door is for safety purpose. That way when u parallel park on the street your passengers in the back won't open the door on incoming traffic and cause an accident or get ran over!
If safety is what they were going for, then why make the driver's side door big like a coupe? That's more door to stick out in the middle of the road when you parallel park...
@@mojavikizashi5138 Now the size difference between the doors i don't know why's that... you'll have to contact Hyundai for that lol... i never noticed that tbh! But i would assume it could be to compensate the weight difference from side to side. since one side has 2 doors they made a bigger door on the other ! I could be wrong...
It pisses me off that the doors are not symmetrical. That's the main reason why I didn't get the older one.
Sooo what does it sound like? Should of put a mic/cam by the exhaust.
The rev hang is to improve emissions. My vq motor has the same thing.
