Hey, Jason, I just came to say hi! Watching the video as I'm typing this. Glad to see another video from you on Proton GE, and glad to see it's become easier! Definitely helps with making gaming easier on Linux.
Some distros don't ship with Fuse which is needed to execute .appimage files. For Debian/Ubuntu the following is how to add it: $sudo apt-get install fuse libfuse2
I know i should not do this, but I just install and update ge-proton using chaotic-aur. They just package some AUR packages for arch Linux and put them in a repository. I know that it means I need to trust that the chaotic team actually hosts binaries without adding patches...
You didn't do an important step to eliminate stutters in games while using GE Proton. You need to run your games with launch options: DXVK_ ASYNC=1 %command%
Thank you so very much for this! I followed a text tutorial on how to add GE and it didn't work, I assumed I did it wrong, I'll be testing this in a little while, thanks again!
Unfortunately yes. It won't update automatically, but I'd argue that's a GOOD thing because GE-Proton releases are frequent and they can consume a lot of space after awhile. I don't know of any way to get notified of new releases aside from following his Twitter account or activating notifications for new releases on GitHub.
Can confirm it works in Fedora 36 using the AppImage just like you said, however the only difference is when going to the properties click permissions and it will say Allow executing file as program.
Hey Jason, I love the videos you are creating. A bit off topic: I can't wait to get my fxtec pro 1 x on my hands. It's getting manufactured (after many delays) next week! I have found your channel through your interview with the fxtec guys and really liked your enthusiasm about it and that you were asking fair but interesting and maybe a little provocative questions. Thank you so much for your journalism work as well as your informative and entertaining videos. They always lighten up my day a little!
Hey, I just found your Channel looking for a way to run Final Fantasy XIV on Linux. Now that I know that it’s absolutely possible, I’m looking for information on switching to Linux for the purpose of gaming in general with a focus on FFXIV in particular, but I’m still a bit lost on how to get started. I’m currently running Windows 10, and I have *ZERO INTEREST* in “uPgRaDiNg” to Windows 11 or anything after. Any advice for those of us looking to transition from Windows to Linux for the purpose of gaming/general use? Thanks in advance!
I'm considering switching to Fedora Silverblue, but I am unsure whether the gaming experience will be "good". Do you know this? Also, have you tried Nobara Project? A GE modified version of Fedora
I can't speak to Silverblue at all, but I DID spend all of last weekend testing Nobara for gaming, and it's terrific. I mean, everything is already there out of the box, ready to go. It's especially valuable if you want to stream or record anything due to the extra codecs and features he's bundled into OBS Studio. Give it a shot! He's even going to add some theming to it soon. I see it making a splash within the next year.
@@LinuxForEveryone I’m also using it. It’s so great and an easy reccomendation for new Linux users, since Fedora is super stable and GE’s modifications actually are useful!
Great video !! But can you test some AAA Games on steam deck using an external monitor im searching for this for a while now and ahhh im not finding anything !! Thank you
I would love to use GEs versions but when QT is downloading it it sits at 99%, I can walk away go to the store and come back and its still at 99%, should I restart or uninstall QT and start fresh? I am on Ubuntu using a desktop PC.
GREAT question, so I asked him directly. He says that he sees no reason not to use GE-Proton across the board, unless something stops working with GE-Proton, like a GE or staging patch breaking something.
Thank you but I can’t get it working. Downloaded 7-14 & installed and assigned it to a game all while in deck desktop. Going to desktop Steam library and going to properties it still won’t show that proton 7-14 version on the list. Edit…so I went back to game mode and then the proton 7-14 showed up. Just launched JustCause2 thanks to a kind redditor and this video on how to actually find 7-14. Yippeee- my pc tinkering xp level just went up a few points.
I want to see if GE works for warzone. I got warzone and battlenet on the Linux side of the steam deck, but it goes black after the studio logo and only plays music
No, I don't have warzone on Linux, only PS4. I was having a similar issue of the screen going black on a PS2 emulator through RetroArch. What turned out to be the issue was the instruction set. My CPU doesn't support AVX2. -gl ideally should force steam to use a lower instruction set. Maybe run lspcu | grep avx, that might be the issue and searching steam launch options might get you the right command to run it.
We've seen some major games like Apex Legends get official Linux support. And I think Valve is working harder to get more games running than ever before.
Hey! I'm very new to linux and I'm having a wee problem. When I try to run the Proton Up app image nothing happens. I have set it to be an executable so I was wondering what else it could be. Thanks!
Not a single game will launch? It sounds like the problem might run deeper than Proton. I had this problem once due to Vulkan not being installed on a distro using a surprisingly outdated kernel (it was Linux Mint). Your best best might be to seek help on the Linux Gaming subreddit, or your distros community support platforms.
@@LinuxForEveryone Thank you for the advice, I think you are right it stopped working when I attempted to fix a problem where gnome-boxes would crash. So I suspect it is a problem with virtualization.
@@josh-rx6ly Make sure your system is up to date by doing a full system update, this will ensure you have the latest packages from your distro. Sometimes a mismatch in installed package versions can cause issues. This can happen when manually updating a single package. For example, updating mesa without the associated dependencies like vulkan can cause issues. Also, in Steam, if you right click on the game and select properties, set the launch properties to: PROTON_LOG=1 %command% Then when you attempt to run the game, it will create a log file in your home folder with the name steam-$STEAMID.log. You can open the file with a text editor and see if it gives any clues as to why the game isn't running. This can result in some quite big log files, so don't forget to remove the launch options when you are done with the log.
@@vegn_brit5176 thanks, yes my district is on its latest release, and patching is automated so it shouldn’t be more than a day out of date. I will try the PRTON_LOG property as this will hopefully provide useful info. If it helps to know the issue also affects every version of proton I have tried, this leads me to think it is a system issue, but seeing why proton fails should help to identify what part of the system is affected.
I love ProtonUp-QT, I made a video on it a few months ago but didn't know they had a flatpak version now for SteamDeck users
Great video! Proton-GE is a brilliant version that fixes a lot of issues (based on Proton-TKG iirc).

Finally Proton-GE on Steam Deck, time for the best experience.
I’m waiting for mine to be delivered today. Once I get it I’m going to use your video to download this so I can play other games. Thanks.
Several games that ”barely worked” on proton 7 or experimental worked perfectly on GE. He is a hero.
Agreed 💯
Valve should hiring him for proton development
@@Faruq-xn4gj he's an engineer at Red Hat. If be willing to bet that pays a little better!

You didn't say or I missed it. What was the performance of the LEGO game on Proton GE?
You can check my last video for 20-minutes of gameplay! But I saw a solid 45 to 60 FPS
Proton is the best. Since Steam deck is out, I play on proton with PC. Win succ big time.
Do you need to launch Proton Up each time to check for/install a new version of Proton GE? Any convenient way to know when a new build is available?

I use protonup-qt, but I install it via the AUR. So many options to download applications nowadays.
Gotta love all that choice.

Hey all! Love this channel! A question, can we run Proton on Linux without steam? and still run a game? If so how!
BTW, what's up with the "welcome home" statement in your intros???
just curious
For anyone having trouble getting GE to show up it steam games properties, restart steam, then it should appear. Took me a minute to figure that out.
Out of curiosity, how would you use proton without STEAM?

Restart Steam?
Same issue here. Did you ever find a solution?
Just restart steam or the steam deck itself

Just a guess in case you haven't gotten it yet but you may want to add "-gl %command%" in the steam launch options without the quotation marks.

Is there a way to get this to work in China? It seems like GetHub is blocked, and OpenVPN is blocked in China. Perhaps Wireguard works on Steam OS?
