yes, that was the old Seaboard Air Line Railroad, not too far down the road is the old Passenger Station and I'm not sure who occupies that building now. But, they actually do very rarely use that line and you can catch a train at the crossing when they pull from the yard two crossings back.
I have no idea lol. The only thing I do know is that judging from both the track condition and the signals being so beaten up, it's been quite some time. When I was a kid, I saw these signals, and they weren't as beaten up as they are now, but they still didn't look like they got much use.
i left portsmouth 45yrs ago and that crossing still looks the same when i come back i always go thru effingham st to see if any trains come thru one of my grandmothers also lived on turnpike rd where npbl crossing was i always came to portsmouth for the summers just to catch rail traffic back in 70s rail traffic was all over portsmouth thanks for posting memories
He lives on Effingham but he says from time to time. Most likely randomly once a week or so. The yard just two streets west still is in very much of use so any long trains will come past to that crossing and block traffic for a while. Also, if you are interested there are two even older crossing gates at Portsmouth Blvd and Rodman Ave. I could point you to a lot of old things in the area
VERY NEAT!!! I'm guessing CSX used this back in the day. It really sucks this line is abandoned just like the NS Virginia beach line. I'm also guessing those signals are from the early 60s and these look MUCH older than the Griswold Signal Company cantilevers on the Virginia beach line. Would like to see those signals operate like, now. Awesome!!
Figured it was former SAL trackage, since the CSX Portsmouth Sub west of here is ex Seaboard as well. Regarding the passenger station, I don't know who owns the building now, if I find out I will let you know. The Railroad Museum of Virginia is just east of here with a N&W steam locomotive and about three passenger cars, that might be where the passenger station was, but IDK. Man I would love to see a train on this line, you have no idea!
Thanks, yeah I remember these signals from a long time ago. They are pretty awesome! Didn't remember the cat-eye crossbuck though. I have to agree with you on the age of the signals-they do look older than the ones at South Plaza Trail. What I wouldn't give to see these signals operate and/or a train go thru here.
We have one set of these on a privately owned crossing owned by Owensboro Grain. Haven't seen them used since roughly 2004 and the track is overgrown, but the signals closer to the grainery were replaced fairly recently, so my guess is they are used rarely.
It shows the Railroad Museum of Virginia about two blocks east of this crossing with a few pieces of rolling stock. According to their website, the steam engine had to arrive and be placed into the tracks via a crane.
I enjoyed the video. I like watchin vids with old signals. Brings back memories of my younger years. Not going back to steam but early diesel locos and cabooses. I also likke watching gates in operation. Always wanted one for my HO set. Used to have a Lionel with a milk car where the guy would shoot out little milk cans by remote control.
I've got some news for you about this line, I did say before it wasn't abandoned it just rarely see traffic. I was at a cookout this weekend and my cousin told me he was caught by a train this week at the Effingham crossing, so it's all in timing. Also, I noticed you drove past the fire station in that video, there also was a former SAL crossing I remember parts of before that fire station was built there and they ripped up the remnants from the street
Those appear to be GRS or general railway signals at least the light's anyway probably late 40's into the 50's i restored some of them for a railroad museum here in maine these are everywhere up here still in service, they are slowly being superseeded by LED lights though
I got one of the Cat's Eys crossbucks & I got mine for FREE! Yes it IS heavy too! What those Cat's Eyes are are plastic reflectors & mine is only missing ONE!
Wow, your cousin is VERY lucky, whether he's a railfan or otherwise! I'd give anything to see a train come thru here! You wouldn't happen to know how often it's used exactly, would you?
I literally live 5 blocks away from this crossing, and I've NEVER seen any rail traffic. They might as well just rip the tracks up, and save us some tax dollars.
@ CSX Railfan Production 2014: I don't believe so. I'd say it gets used every week to every few weeks. When it's used I have no idea. But I will say that I would LOVE to see a train through here.
Not sure. Haven't been over that way too recently. I've thought about riding over there and shooting another video, now that I have 2160p 4K. I thought this line was abandoned but it turns out that it does get traffic once in a while when trains are backing out of the yard. So these signals do (did?) end up seeing traffic after all.
You got me, bud. I think portions of it MIGHT still be used, the key word being "MIGHT". I personally have never seen a train here, but I can picture a short CSX train being led by an EMD standard cab and 10-20 cars coming through here in my mind.
I don't believe so...but it is VERY LIGHTLY used. From what I heard from another viewer, sometimes it activates when a train is switching in the nearby railyard on former Seaboard Air Line trackage. I can't speak for this myself because I've never seen it happen, but it sure would be neat to catch that!
@@VArailfan89 still running? That’s amazing since I last remembered the tracks being overgrown. Not to mention the cast iron crossbucks are missing now
@@VArailfan89 yeah. I was about 13 when I posted this original comment. Also, regarding what i said, this was as of 2019, when I was still in VA, again
@Class"J"VideoProductions On the outskirts of Americus, Ga... Either that or Ellaville, Ga.... Tracks are taken over by weed.... And who knows how long they been out of services... It'll be cool if I got a video and take those home
hey joey. one day, me, 57kirbyTV, and my parents went up to visit a Breeze house in Severna park but, on our way up, i found a Rail-Trail on Riggs avenue BUT, there were some VERY OLD Crossbucks!!! I got my chance to film them and they were the Cat-eye Crossbucks AND they had the Black background with white lettering. I'm guessing the B&O used to own that line. If you want to see them, go to my channel and you'll find the video.

Great Find! According to the FRA, The CSX Portsmouth Sub gets only about 2 trains a day, so yes, it is almost impossible to find a train on that sub.

I came across some cat iron cross bucks the other day... They are sitting on an abandoned line though, and I do t get a video either =(
@ Kyle Byse: Where was this? Too bad the line's abandoned.
Awesome Video VArailfan89!
These Union Metal Cantilevers are still in pretty good condition considering they aren't used anymore.
That Brick Building at 3:00 looks like a Former SAL Depot, I could be wrong
Did they the railroad crossing out along with the railroad tracks?
Hmm...didn't know anything about a trolley running. I know a trolley used to run on the old Virginia Beach Line which is now abandoned as well.
I know I haven't. I remember seeing them as a kid, and they've gotten more beat up over the years...
No problem, I like this crossing and hope to get a train here sometime!
thanks for the upload i know this area very well!!! being from Chesapeake!!

The cat-eye crossbucks are now gone. ua-cam.com/video/jHquR6Ggb5g/v-deo.html for some reason the three remaining signals still remain.
Well that's too bad. :( Guess it's a good thing I got them when I did. I hope they ended up in good hands of a collector and not scrapped.
Class J Video Productions I do too.
that fourth crossing was a mast signal with a different brand of lights and another mechanical bell
There's crossings just like that in south charston.
the cantilever lights are WABCO 8 inch lights

Has anyone seen these signals activate before
it would be great to see new tracks and signals & bells @ that crossing
Is this Railroad Crossing Abandoned?
theres a signal like this, exactly, but they replaced the bell on it
@ SkyKitten1: Really? Where at?
In Marietta Georgia
SkyKitten1 Oh OK cool, on the CSX main!
yep
it originally had a griswold mechanical bell the one near me, but the old bell was stolen so they had to put a general signal ebell on it
I wonder when the last train was
idk i heard from a friend who lives there that that crossing had a shunter go threw it not that long ago to drop off some frieght cars
OK, I'll take a look. Thanks for letting me know! :)
There are still some Abandoned Lines in Portsmouth! Especially in the HOOD!
Yep there are. I was told this crossing does occasionally get used but it's extremely rare. I'd love to catch one here

Uh...pretty sure that's illegal, man. Better get CSX's permission first. Not to mention they're uber-heavy. Thanks for the comment and view! LOL :P

Yeah, just a short way down the track. I don't think this section is used much if at all.
