Thanks for sharing this, which is one of the best Making Of videos I've seen. I love this film, and the novel, of which it is a very faithful interpretation. One thing that is covered here is the omitting of Benno's diary, which makes a lot of dramatic sense, because to include it would give away the story's ending. However, in the novel, Eric and Elise finally make love, between the murder of Torval and the encounter of Eric and Benno, at the conclusion of a Spencer Tunick-like nude film shoot. Cronenberg simply ignored this part of the novel. Can I say that I resent this? First of all, the scene raps up two things: Eric's desire for Elise, and, the results of Eric's activity in the currency market (the fictional film must stop shooting because its budget has mysteriously disappeared). Secondly, the scene in the book describes a real event from the spring of 2000, in New York, and its inclusion in the novel is a real link to the fictional world of the novel, which is prefaced by the words, IN THE YEAR 2000. Possibly, to a New Yorker, De Lillo's Cosmopolis is much more like New York than a Canadian auteur could understand.
