Ari, wow! Everything was perfect: the film and developer combination, location, weather, and most importantly, the eye of the photographer. Those shots were all beauties with that old style gritty look. You handle that Graflex like it was a Kodak Instamatic - I'd be fumbling on every dark slide move and film holder change...
Very appealing photographs, Ari. As always, another brilliant session. Thanks for showing the way in such inclement weather. Now I'm inspired to get my carcass out there the next time it rains. It's not likely to sleet and snow just yet here in the Alpes, though. Best wishes.
Great photos. I really appreciate how you from extensive experience which film and developer to match the look you seek. That already puts you in the high category! I also have been looking forward to your annual outing with the graflex B for the first snowfall pictures. I guess this weather didn’t provide enough snow and I’m glad for that because as others have commented the wet streets are captured sumptuously!
You never cease to inspire sir. Much too often I stop myself from taking photos when I feel the conditions or subject matter just aren’t ideal. I have a hard time thinking that I’ll be “wasting” expensive film.. who knows what opportunities I have let slip by. Thank you
I love how black and white looks timeless with the correct subjects! Getting out in bad weather is something I rarely do, just because I don’t want to get wet. Haha Thanks for a great video and making me think about going out in rainy weather. I hope it rains soon here since we are in a drought!
Thanks Ari! There is no bad weather, only the wrong clothing. These old, high quality mechanical cameras are the best, especially when conditions are less inviting.
Always love your winter shots. My favourite one of yours was taken with your big Graflex of someone crossing a main road in the driving snow. Many memories of snow in Helsinki in the 90s when I worked for a Finnish company and travelled to Finland a lot. Not sure where you are based but doesn't look like Helsinki. Great video as ever Ari. Kippis..
Your affinity for the Fall season . . . the rapid change in temperature and color feels like a bit of a personal preference for contrast. Dissenting light and dark? And so it is that your photography is drawn to that similar contrast. Really nice work. Some of my favorite days were on the ski lifts with my boys with huge pillows of snow falling all around us and my SLR in my backpack. That picture at 4:30 had me fooled for a moment. I initially thought there was something like shutter capping going on or perhaps a little darkroom magic but no - just the way the reflections of the buildings was caught making a vertical column of light in the center of the frame. And I'm now heading off to the grocery store hoping I grab a copy of the NY TImes. As always, appreciate you and the time you put into this. Thank you.
Funny -- I had a section in this video explaining that I'm a cheerful and happy person. But I love moody and dark photographs. I took it out because I didn't have enough time to explain it -- but it's like art has a life of its own. Like an actor in a movie -- it's not him. It's acting :-)
You seemed to be having such a good time with your Graflex. In your cap and jacket, Graflex hanging from one hand while you switched film holders with the other -- it was a scene from a legendary past; Weegee maybe, on the gritty streets of New York. What a great video!
Street photography with Speed Graphic when it's raining wet snow. That has some great attitude! (and got some nice photos too!) Very good point: I hate that kind of weather but I like photos like that. I have taken very few photos in that kind of weather. Perhaps I should try it more!
I'm a big fan of Fomapan film and Rodinal, I'm not sure why it has it dissenters. Great set of images, which as you say, is enhanced by the grittiness of the Foma\Rodinal combination.
You have me excited for snow. Weather in Ontario, Canada has been up and down. Leaves are down but highs of 20C vs. 7C in the day. Think it will be a while yet. I have some Foma 100 for my 5x7 in the freezer. Maybe I should use it up. I really like the difference from your 4x5 to your medium format. Shows how you can really change the atmosphere.
Oh to have interesting weather! Here is Edinburgh we are having "anticyclonic gloom". Day after day of thick cloud but no rain let alone snow. Not even any mist or fog where we are. The sun will break through for ten minutes but then go away again for a few days. If the sky is an enormous softbox then looking down is often productive though.
Totally with you on that, lights flatter than a map of Holland. The world lit by a 30 watt bulb. I tend to go for detail up close, tree bark, rusty gates etc (Stirling-ish)
@@ShootOnFilm Unfortunately we don't get 'days' like that ... we're now getting months like that. The summer here has been generally flat and lacking contrast, the autumn the same and our winters have lacked snow (wouldn't have anything to do with world climate conditions would it ?) I admired your willingness to go out in the dodgy weather but I'm rather with the old lady's opinion ... brrrrrrr 🤷♂
It's something I don't like. They have a net full of small led lights that they can then harass people with like this: images.sanoma-sndp.fi/d847043f6558866563519cce0d82c371.jpg/normal/658.webp
I hate that kind of weather but the pictures are great. I like Fomapan 400 in 120 and 4x5 but in 35mm it's too grainy for my taste, for that I prefer HP4 or Kentmere. Rodinal 1:100 semi-stand is my go-to-developer because I'm lazy and cheap and it's a very easy and very economical way of developing and I also like the results. I like contrasty and slightly grainy "old" look in black and white.
Some impressive shots! What's even more impressive is the fact that you can leave your digital camera alone on a tripod, shoot the graflex and be assured that it will be there when you are done! Have you ever used a Graghmatic film holder? It can make shooting, especially in bad weather, a bit easier.
I just left my iPhone on the ground, on top of trashcans and stuff. I didn't even have a tripod :-) I do not own a Graphmatic -- i know what it is, and I have one broken one. I should probably see if I can fix it. I know it would simplify things, but I'm pretty handy changing those single sliders, too :-)
@ShootOnFilm There is something satisfying about handling a regular film holder. It makes you feel a part of what photographers have done for so many years. A a Tradition!
Hello Ari, As always great! One comment regarding cultural differences: here you would get run over in the middle of the street because there is much more traffic, and you could be treated more aggressively for taking pictures of people without asking for their permission - there has been some kind of sociophobia or worse in recent years... And as for the "ugly" Fomapan and Rodinal, for me it is also a great combination! Because if I was looking for smooth beauty and perfection, I probably wouldn't do it with an old camera and technology from 100 years ago. You have achieved a wonderful result that moves emotions and I guess that's the point! As always, I admire you and send my warmest regards
Hi! Thanks again for commenting. Yeah, this used to be a very busy street. But about 5 years ago they made it car free. They built tram tracks on it and prohibited car traffic. So now, there are no ugly parked cars and much less traffic. SO good for photography. Some people get angry here, too. One person even called the police a few years ago. But here's the thing: the law is on my side. I can photograph anybody in the public space. No limits. And as long as I do not cause clear harm to the person I can also publish my photos. And public spaces includes libraries, stores, sporting venues, restaurants .. you name it. Even somebody sitting in his car. What is NOT considered a public space is of course somebody's home, hospitals or say RV:s. Anything that is considered a place to live and sleep. Everything else is pretty much free game. This is called freedom up here :-) . I know for example France is much more strict about these things, an I hope Finland stay the way it is. Heck, even everybody's income is public record an published every November. So you can go online and see ho much you neighbour made this year.
But then you live in Finland so you can't dislike that kind of weather too much. Versus someone who lives in Florida or, say, Italy. What dilution of Rodinal do you use to get that contrast? Oh yeah, I do like these images. Not living in as large a city, I can't get this kind of "street feel". Thanks for sharing.
Thanks. yes, we are heda of you - weather-wise :-) How far north? I love Eureca, the sand banks and the dune strip at the front of it, and everything up there north.
Excellent photos. Especially liked the mood of the Graflex photos. I liked that "ugly" look 🙂Just curious, why did you change the exposure of the scenes to more high-key with the rolleiflex?
That probably happened primarily because the Graflex pictures were taken around 9:30 - 10 am. And the Rolleiflex around 11.30-noon. This time of the year -- a huge difference in the amount of light. Also, Fomapan vs. Pancro has a play here. But I also did not want to open the Graflex pictures because I liked them more rough ....
Wondered what settings you used with the Fomapan. It all looked pretty gloomy on the video for working with 4x5. Maybe you pushed the film a couple of stops ?
