Great video. Thanks for doing one about 1B mitts {my favorite 😃}. The Wilson 1620 is just an awkward looking and feeling mitt. I've tried it at Dick's and there is just nothing about it that I like. The Marucci being too small is consistent with my experience with Marucci 1B mitts. I sold a Marucci that was labeled as 13" but was really 12.5" tops. The Rawlings PRO DCT pattern has been around for decades. Whereas it might not be the best mitt for everybody, it is pretty much the standard 1B mitt among pro first basemen. It checks most of the boxes and gets the job done. The Wilson 2820 is a really cool mitt (I own a Rawlings FM20XL, which is the closest Rawlings equivalent). Unlike my Rawlings, the Wilson 2820 has an open back (in contrast to most other two-hinge patterns, which are closed back). The two hinges give a wider, deeper pocket than you would expect. The 12.25" on mitts like this is really laughable, as they are at least 12.5" and really play up to about 12.75" or 13" in terms of feel. Compared to mitts like the Marucci, they feel huge.
The 13" Mizuno Pro H web made from Kip leather is the best 1st Basemen's mitt ever made! Once broken in the H web stretched a little and molded to ball, it creates the best pocket ever, almost like a lacrosse stick. It makes turning dps easy because the ball is in the exact same spot every time, it is also one of the bigger 13" models so it increases your range.
My 7 year old is a 1st base prodigy, he loves using the Rawlings highlight series first base mitt, it has the same notch cutout as that mizuno, it’s easy for him to close since he’s still small. But he nabs every ball thrown his way, he loves his glove.
My son is gaming a 44 RB5 - still not 100% broken in being Pro Stiff, but getting better. I think it will serve him well over the next years through High School.
Bought a Wilson A2800 12" in 1996 to start my freshman year of highschool. Still play 2 seasons of slow pitch a year with it to this day. Amazing mitt. All my gloves are A950-A2000s for me and my kids because of the quality of that first mitt
That’s true but they don’t feel the same at all. Different leather and interior makes two completely different mitts. I do agree though we need to review those next. This was not an exhaustive list 👌
My son is a utility player so 1st base glove is super important to have. He chose the Rawlings R9 because of the cost and it matches his HOH Garry Sanchez 33.5. Had it 2 seasons already and he loves it.
I've always been a Wilson guy for the most part, but their first base mitts are the WORST. Any time I need a first base mitt, I've always gone with the DCT from Rawlings. It's a perfect pattern for first base.
Follow up on this first base mitt video. Perhaps add 44, Mizuno, in the mix and perhaps different patterns closed web, H web and Cross web comparisons. Rawlings DCT vs. FM models. Thanks 👍

I got a custom made Nokona first base mitt in 1979 from a scout for the Cincinnati Reds that is still in great shape. Far and away the best glove I ever owned. Much better than my Rawlings double ca-thud
can 100% agree about the trash on the 1620, currently i play college baseball in nebraska and i have yet to break it in and i’ve been using it since july of last year. Unless you catch a ball perfect (which then it feels really good) it is a wobble machine
It's not the difference between the A2000 and the A2K that is making the difference, it's the difference between the Wilson 1620 vs the 2820 pattern. Both the A2000 and A2K each come in either pattern, but the 2820 has the dual hinge design. That said, I have a 1620, and you REALLY have to work in the pocket. Like get a mallet and STRETCH the base of the web/pocket area. It took a lot of time, but it got there. Probably wished I got the 2820, but the 1620 is, as you mentioned, incredibly comfortable.
Back in the day, I was the super utility player. I could play anywhere at good to great level. Going into new teams, we always had players who only played one or two positions. I always could play anywhere, literally. Went into first base during some high school years because apparently people are afraid of the ball even at that level and make terrible throws 🤣 So, I stepped up and took the reigns. I used a TPX from Louisville and omgsh, It was THE. BEST. I believe it was a 12.75. More of a 1 hinge break in and that makes sense looking back on it. Picking you want to use that pinky side hinge to trap the ball into the pocket behind the thumb. The thumb side you want to be strong so you don't break your thumb and lose the ball or accidentally be too pushy with it and block the ball out. I wore it traditional. That glove helped me thrive there even though it was not my main position. It helped me gain a lot of confidence at the position knowing the glove was doing its job and it was all up to me now. No clue what model type it was or anything else. But, it swallowed the ball no matter what.
for what it’s worth, wilsons use narrower lace in the web than every other brand, so not surprising to see a popped lace from the used one. for example a rawlings 1st base mitt (and all their gloves for that matter, same with every other brand i know of) will have 3/16” lace for pretty much the whole glove, but the actual lace that runs through the web and web spiral (and what runs across the top of the fingers on gloves) and holds the web to the body of the glove is 1/4”, but on a wilson it’s 3/16” throughout. they do the same thing with all their gloves as well, which i don’t think is a huge deal cause that doesn’t take the same impact as a 1st base mitt.
I've noticed with some of the wilson first base that the pockets are super shallow (example the Jose Abreu model) but wilson players loosen up the web quite a bit. If you look at Abreu's game glove compared to the stock game model, the web has been adjusted a ton
Something that i think should also be brought up is the actual design of the gloves. On the Rawlings and Marucci gloves, the top of the fingers is sort of separated, which helps create sort of a bowl-effect, while on the Wilsons, its more of a solid plate it bounces down.
What about the Rawlings renegade series first base mitt? Or even the R9 series? In my opinion those are great glove options for youth players? Thoughts? Also, will you review those as well?
as a sophomore playing varsity and using a dct i would love to see a review on the 1679 because its felt good in stores but not sure if i want a pattern im not sure about even though im a big wilson guy

@@ballgloveking unfortunately, nobody we know likes the non leather backing. It makes the glove a little lighter, but two other 1st basemen we know said the same thing. I agree on the Rawlings . I just got my 12 year old son a similar glove to that PRO DCT , the R2G 12.25 Contour and he loves it . He's been using Rawlings Encores the past few years and while those have been great gloves and can take a pretty good beating I felt like we needed to take a step up to the heart of the hides . He uses a Gamer XLE on the mound or in the infield and I don't feel like in that price range there's any other glove that can compete with it , but I can understand Rawlings not going that route as they already have the R9 and Encores .
@@ballgloveking i ended up getting the sandlot glove. I think its really stiff for 90 bucks, maybe we should consider a firstbase budget glove!! Also thanks for responding

Weird, I have a slightly older A2000 1620 and the pocket is plenty deep. Its actually one of my favorite mitts because it just swallows everything, great glove for a coach/dad.

(good budget option) I would actually recommend my first base mitt Rawlings sand lot first base it’s not the current one it’s the one with the brown and black web but it’s the same thing you can get it for 90 on Rawlings website I believe rn I bought it because a phew years back my cheap Rawlings first base mit ripped on the web I believe it was called the Rawlings select but the sand lot for about a season of use has been way better and was pretty much the same price I bought the other one for and the sand lot has a nice pattern I would say the pocket is good in between mid and big but 2 in the pink is probably out of 10 around a 9.8 (I wear it 2 in the pink finger kind of hanging near the spot you would put your finger on using it straight up) btw a kid probably threw 70 on what would be a close play and it went right threw the pocket and it wasent quite ripped on all of the web but it would easily go thew the web
@@Yeezusfan22 yes the r9 first base is probably better because it’s more expensive it’s only 130 which is cheap but you can get the sandlot for 80 bucks
I have the Rawlings sandlot SFM18S and have loved it for the price, easy break-in, and the deep pocket, if you get a chance I'd like to see what you think of it!
My 9 year old had the mizuno power close 12 inch 1B glove. It was his primary mitt and it got floppy after a spring season where he played both travel and rec ball. I bought him a Bradley Next gen 1B glove and am hoping that it lasts longer. He had a lot of doinkage with that glove in the beginning.
Would the buckler hoplite outfield glove be a good option for a dad/coach wanting a solid cheap outfield glove or would you recommend something else for that $100 price range?
Have you tried a Mizuno Pro first base glove? Or Jax? If you like them can you put them on your website to purchase? I'm having a hard time trying to find a new one to purchase.
Always dig the videos. I have been in the market for a 13" first base glove for slowpitch. It's not a necessity, but I may be playing first more often in league play. I am a Rawlings guy, but I don't want to sleep on other makers that offer better bang for the buck. I have heard Mizuno makes great first base gloves; and I've recently found a good deal on an All-Star Pro Elite. I am just curious what your opinion is on those makers.
44's RB5 is my favorite mitt I've ever found as a lifelong first baseman. Wilson makes trash mitts honestly at this point, look at what keeps happening to their MLB guys like Vladdy jr, balls love going through their mitts more than any other brand.
I’ve always played first base and love it in high school, I had a Newman glove that was black with a white inside. But I can’t find anything like it. Now any suggestions.
picked up the Marucci M for 180 on JustGloves... the price at that point just brought the glove a bit ahead in value for me. Plus I love the small details of a clean glove as well. Edit: the glove was listed as used and in "excellent condition" ... still a win imo
Noob slowpitch player here. Can't really find any specifically SP 1b gloves or any over 13". Do you think 13" 1b mitt would be good fo SP or would a bigger regular glove be better in this case? Thanks
atm I have a Rawlings R9 first base mitt and for a few reasons I cant get a new mitt, it is getting a little floppy for my liking so any tips to get more use out of it?
something i will say that i’ve found after playing first base is not pressing the finger part of the glove. keep it as straight as possible to keep as much surface area open as possible. im a huuuuuuge flair guy, there isn’t a glove i own that doesnt have a flaired thumb or pinky but i’ve stuck to leaving the fingers flat. i have the same 44 glove that was in the video and i can positively say that it is by far and away the best 1st base glove i’ve had from how well it broke in, how it almost molded to my hand, how deep the pocket is and overall comfort of the glove. overall, whoever sees this doesn’t have to listen but i just wanted to give my two cents. hope this finds anyone that reads or tries it well
We've had four custom 44 first base mitts and got rid of all of them. The issue with 44 even to this day is that you can get a great glove from them and 3 bad ones after. Their build and quality is VERY inconsistent. I gave up on them.

@@Evolved_swaysandlot series is so good. I’m a catcher and for me my sandlot catchers mitt works amazing! I have a pro preferred catchers mitt too but not broken in yet
@@Lukethecatchernice, bat the pro preferred is clean
With a Rawlings, I have noticed that you can go to in the pinky and traditional on all of them that’s one reason why I chose Rawlings
Good to know 👌
This is why ball glove king has the most aesthetic form of all time
Psshhh it’s all in the hips
Can you also include the 44 mitt?
Your videos are so good
I have one that’s is ether the 1620 or something very similar, takes forever to break in (about one year constant use one year inconsistent) but as soon as it gets broken in, best glove I’ve had so far
I also have one similar, starting to feel real nice after about 3 weeks of casual break in
Can you please do budget 1st baseman mits
Weird, I have a slightly older A2000 1620 and the pocket is plenty deep. Its actually one of my favorite mitts because it just swallows everything, great glove for a coach/dad.
I have that a2000 and I found when you go 3 in the pinky it feels great
Yeah we messed around with three and I still didn’t love it, but I’m glad it’s working for you!
The Mizuno looked and seems like you did best with it. Complimented more than the rest. I think you secretly liked the Mizuno.
I love my 44, but it came in stiff as a board and took FOREVER to break in
I have had that budget glove for around 5 6 years and it still has to be one of the best gloves i have had
11:47 Asking seriously - is there a good reason to consider a first base or catcher mitt for just playing catch with the kids? For example, my wife who doesn't have a background in baseball/softball but wants to start playing catch with our son. New video idea: mom glove?
R9 is way better
Ssk
@@Yeezusfan22 yes the r9 first base is probably better because it’s more expensive it’s only 130 which is cheap but you can get the sandlot for 80 bucks
I personally would say budget wise , go with an R9 or an Encore if you prefer Rawlings . Stay away from the low budget Akadema's or SSK's
The r9 is good but I prefer the feel of the sandlot and looks I’ve used a r9 before (first base not a normal one)
I just purchased the SSK Z7 13" and love it. Deep pocket. Love it. Is anyone else out there using this glove?
I use a Wilson a2000 first base glove and it is forming a pocket finally after months and I love it now
Same, he didn’t spend nearly enough time with it.
Would the buckler hoplite outfield glove be a good option for a dad/coach wanting a solid cheap outfield glove or would you recommend something else for that $100 price range?
I can’t really speak on the Buckler I’m not sure 🤔 I would say watch my budget -$100 video and let that influence you
Thank you for so much information
My pleasure!
please don't get me wrong, but your Brother need to See a Barber 🤣
Mizuno's are very nice gloves
How do you recommend to wear the 2820, I’ve always worn it two in the pinky but I notice you went traditional
Great video! Always helpful content! Can you do a review of the Wilson 2024 A1000 CM33 33” Catcher’s Mitt?
Thanks chris!
Feelings on the ALL Star 13” FGAS-FB first baseman ?
You haven’t gotten to try a yabai 1st base mitt, have you? They seem solid for the price but after this I’m curious about the pattern and pocket depth
Thanks
As a first basemen I loved this video although my glove model wasn’t in the video I have a 12 3/4
Sounds like the Rizzo model 😉👍
Would you recommend a gold glove elite as one of the better budget ones you can get
Can you please make a video about Rico gloves?
atm I have a Rawlings R9 first base mitt and for a few reasons I cant get a new mitt, it is getting a little floppy for my liking so any tips to get more use out of it?
Please review the sandlot 1st base it’s my glove that I use and would love to see what you think
something i will say that i’ve found after playing first base is not pressing the finger part of the glove. keep it as straight as possible to keep as much surface area open as possible. im a huuuuuuge flair guy, there isn’t a glove i own that doesnt have a flaired thumb or pinky but i’ve stuck to leaving the fingers flat. i have the same 44 glove that was in the video and i can positively say that it is by far and away the best 1st base glove i’ve had from how well it broke in, how it almost molded to my hand, how deep the pocket is and overall comfort of the glove. overall, whoever sees this doesn’t have to listen but i just wanted to give my two cents. hope this finds anyone that reads or tries it well
We've had four custom 44 first base mitts and got rid of all of them. The issue with 44 even to this day is that you can get a great glove from them and 3 bad ones after. Their build and quality is VERY inconsistent. I gave up on them.
The Rawlings is way better looking!
Can you do something about what to look for in a softball glove
My Easton K-Pro is still the best glove ever. Have had it for 17 years now.
Would you suggest 2 in pinky or 1, for a 13" softball first base mitt?
Two for softball but it’s up to you!
Awesome man thank you! Yes it definitely seems more comfortable! Cheers! Keep up the great content!
Glad I just bought my son the 1620.
uh oh 😕
As a slowpitch player, is a 1st base glove worth it?
Yeah but it’s gotta be really deep and not too flimsy!
Flimsy first base mitts turn into errors
I used your break in video to break on my brand new a950
Common ball glove king w
🙏
hay can you make a video about the rawlings premeum catchers mitt
Love the vids
Thanks my guy 🙏
Any recommendations for slowpitch firstbase mitt?
Ruth 🔛 🔝
I am going to start doing this but i need you to review SSK glove cause I think they aren't getting enough notice
