Ed, Quite a scary experience. From now on I'm setting 2 anchor alarms. Looking forward to your next - lessons learned- video. Wishing you smooth sailing for the rest of the trip.
Thank goodness y'all are safe. I know you sail under the title "Trying Not To Sink," but I know I'll speak for sovery many of us out here that we prefer Mai Tais and smooth voyages and visiting exciting exotic Caribbean locales rather than taking on water at night while playing bumper cars with cliffsides. Glad you all are safe and what a scary situation to be in. I've only ever drug anchor in a sandy harbor but thankfully it just wouldn't set and I was watching it the entire time. Stay safe!
I've been a subscriber to the channel for quite some time now. I can't remember anything that came as close as this to a disaster. I consider you two to be one of the most experienced crews on UA-cam, so this came as a real surprise. I am really anxious to hear where that quantity of water could have come from.
So sorry to hear of your anchor event, but you made me research the anchor alarm functionality on my Furuno Navnet. I also installed the Anchor App on my phone as a backup. I don't want that kind of surprise.
Yikes! I understand that your anchor alarm failed, which is a scary situation. Some recommendations to consider (besides a secondary/backup anchor alarm 🙂): If you're expecting flukey weather or strong tidal flows, you can always set a kedge anchor along with your main. Also, consider posting watches like you would underway if you're unsure of your holding power. If your house batteries can handle it (or you're running the genset through the night), consider a proximity alarm for the radar in case you drag anchor towards leeward.
Hi mate I know that this is an old video about dragging anchor and it’s most likely useless tod at but when we lived aboard the last three years I slept with the anchor watch alarm app on the iPhone and it worked without fail anywhere even in isolated areas , doesn’t need phone service and it saved our boat so many times .
We had two anchor alarms set. One lost it's GPS signal. The other one's battery died. We have since added an alarm on our AIS system, which works great. When we went to sleep there was no wind, and none predicted. A squall must have come through. In bad weather, we do anchor watches, as you'll see in an upcoming video. Thanks for watching! Cheers!
So I think the lesson here and no knock on Ed or Lynn is a second anchor alarm as a backup. Redundancies are your friends. ie backup navigation if one fails. Love your videos and the honest bad with the good experiences. Humble you both are. When I get my boat I hope to run into you, well, not literally.

Any idea if it was fresh or saltwater? That would determine if it was an onboard system (fresh) or some sort of exterior breech (salt). Good luck with the investigation.
I wonder if the water in the bilge is from the rain and squals you guys went through or maybe when you guys hit the rock wall it shifted something enough to take on water and then maybe the wood swelled and it stopped leaking !!!! I can't wait for the next episode and I'm glad everyone is ok and you guys didn't sink !!!! It is a day and night difference when you have a Captian like you that knows what they are doing and knows every square inch of your boat and can handle a situation like this and not panic as opposed to someone that would have no idea what to do in this situation !!! Love you guys keep up the amazing videos !!!
On Below Deck tv series, always an anchor watch. I understand why becuz the same darn thing happens on our 58 Hatt, even just in Herring Bay in Maryland. I use 5 or 6x on the drop too. Will start as Nice quiet anchoring, then Bam!...the wind kicks up at 2 am as usual and we're 300 yards off on the GPS when I awake to the 4 am check on my alarm. Happened twice, so now we don't anchor overnight without a good reason. Seems like sailboats stay anchored better, but you and I are in a high and tall profile beautiful Hatt! As for the bilge, really strange, but possibly shaft packing seal was being jarred to make a undesirable leak. Thats my next project. Port transmission shaft packing. No jokes please...lol
We anchor over night a lot. This was our first real problem in 5 years. We had an anchor alarm and it failed. We'll be discussing it in our next video.
I am new to your channel. Enjoying seeing your firsthand account of adventures at sea. I have a healthy respect for the ocean and would not want to venture far from land, if I got on a boat, in the ocean……fear of sharks, drowning, etc. Was wondering if there are constant issues when sailing in the ocean, that need to be addressed?

I can't wait to find out how the water came into the generator room. A night time watch would be a lot to ask of someone, but I guess that's why the old timers did that. Maybe the anchor alarm as a sentry. As your channel says, "Trying Not to Sink".
I was surprised how easy it was to get off as well. I thought it was going to be a fight. We use an anchor alarm. Unfortunately, it failed. We discuss what happened in our next video.
Glad you all made it unharmed but sorry to hear about the incident. Hope the damage is minor.
Thanks. Us as well!
Any idea if it was fresh or saltwater? That would determine if it was an onboard system (fresh) or some sort of exterior breech (salt). Good luck with the investigation.
The video was shot 2 months ago.
wow glad all is ok
Thanks!
Thanks. It was definitely a learning experience. We will go over all the details in the next video.
We'll be discussing it in our next video.
possibly the water was from earlier, like heading when into weather?
We explain what happened in the next video.
Not constant issues. We usually go months without a problem. But things come up from time to time and need to be expected.
Oh wow!
