  • In this profile, Madeline Gannon shares her work taming giant, industrial robots into collaborative companions. She demonstrates custom gesture-based software she developed in order to communicate with her big, orange robot, ABBA. Using a wearable device and motion-capture system, Gannon shows how new ways of using old technology might rewrite how humans and automation co-exist.

    Automatica by John Stanford.
A cool vid of robotic arm bass, piano, drums cranking out a song.

You trust your code with your life that it has no bugs..

She probably doesn't. Underneath, at the low level of the robot's controller, someone probably set it up to vastly limit its speed so she wouldn't hurt herself. I've seen those robots used for what they are designed to do : we put them in cages for a very good reason.

Robot's can never replace humanity. We built them to come about but we can also take them out too, if the robot could ever become evil. I have more fear of a person than I do a robot. The evil person would be the one to cause the damages.

Nah. Robots lack emotion where it matters. They can evolve in hours what takes a man weeks. But that's the risk associated with creating a perfect being.

What's scarier than being next to a tamed wild animal? Being next to a stone cold machine that cannot think for itself and is one user error or software bug away from knocking you across the factory...

My exact though watching this. Those robots can move several meters per second at top speed. Waaaaaay faster than a human can process and move out of the way. They also have (relative to humans) an infinite amount of strength. In the case of a serious error knocking you across the factory would be minor compared to it just crushing you into the concrete floor.
My only thought on how you could make this more "safe" is to limit the arms max speed. But even then, that function is likely not safety rated. And there are still dozens of other ways things can go wrong (entrapment, entanglement, etc.).

Looks really cool. but honestly such a robot is not a toy. one wrong line of code or another error and one human less on earth.

Thats why the panel has a "totmannsknopf" if you let it go or push it to hard the robot does an emergency brake

@@notparanoid912 dude I program these things for a living…the “deadman” switch that she has to keep pressed for the robot to work doesn’t mean a damn thing if the robot “hiccups”. Yes the switch may be released and the robot looses power, but if the bug causes it to lunge, it would knock her out in an instant, or worse. That robot weighs an order of magnitude more than her.
Again, that switch isn’t a “fail safe” that she has control of, and anything stupid can happen. I’m not saying what she is doing isn’t awesome work, but don’t for a minuet believe that her holding that pendant means she’s not in danger of loosing her life. Spend some time around these machines and watch how quickly the same line of code that has ran for cycle after cycle can mess up.

when I see these constructions I am afraid that someone will use them to kill people like in the game "Wolfenstein: The New Order - Execution Scene"

How does it feel to take work away from people? Have you thought about your children, your relatives, your children's children, where will they go to work if the world is mechanized like that in a massive way?
    😕

They will enjoy their life being able to go to the beach, create amazing art, go on family walks. Enjoy family dinners every night. At least that would be the case if they owned said robot and used it for their own business.
