Hosted by filmmaker Yujiro Seki, Carving the Divine TV is a series of Q&A sessions with Buddhist scholars and practitioners. These Q&A sessions explore the basic concepts of Buddhism and the history of Buddhism so that when viewers finally watch Carving the Divine they will get the maximum value of the documentary. Today, we will have Rev. Meido Moore Roshi, the abbot of Korinji (Rinzai Zen training monastery) to discuss the basic concept of Rinzai Zen Buddhism.
We will ask important questions such as:
    1. What is your personal definition on Zen?
    2. What is Rinzai school? What is unique about it?
    3. What is exactly Koan practice?
    4. Who is the Rinzai founder Eisai?
    5. How does Rinzai Zen use Buddhist sculpture in practice?

Very interesting. I practice at a Rinzai temple in Los Angeles, after having practiced at the main Soto temple here in LA. The instruction I received, as a layman, focused on the proper form of practice (how to sit zazen, how to move in the temple), and to "let the experience wash over you"--that's it. (We don't do koans as our temple does not currently have an abbott.) So, this abbott's reference to "vibrations" and so forth is different from our Rinzai practice emphasis here.

This is a good talk and I have both of Meido's books "Rinzai Zen" and "Hidden Zen".
But it is more accurate to call Meido's teachings Hakuin Zen. Rinzai (Lin Chi), had a very simple technique of paying attention to what it was that was hearing, seeing, touching etc. Hakuin Zen is a lot more work than Lin Chi Zen.
