I guess I am confused: The conductor is the conductor for the Westminster Chorus and and a number of singer are also in the Westminster Chours. Are these two groups related via members etc.

Wonderful opportunities for men from around the USA to show we are not all arrogant idiots, and some of us have some talent. Now, commenters before me who thought another group did better or worse: it's not about winning or losing, it's about life. and what we do with it. Of course, there could have been some more impressive displays from the other group, but this group did just wonderfully. If you're looking to fault someone, fault the correographers who didn't use the talent they had here for the best options. Then again, I wasn't there for the performance, just see what I see here on the video. These "competitions" are really NOT competitions but times for men and women to enjoy music. That's the bottom line.

The uptune was really fun! I love that song. Ballad could have been better, but very good job nonetheless!

it honestly has to do with them being 3rd in the line up that day. being up that early and having to sing early in contest doesnt help you in your scores.

@@MadisonHasty, well there's only one way we can make it even more difficult, and that's by singing FIRST in a couple of weeks in Charlotte!!!

The ballad could have been so much better, for example, by matching the quality at the start of the tag. There were numerous synchronization errors, particularly on the consonant "t" (which is not a "d"), pitch errors, squeaky tenors. Westminster is several levels better, even with the same director and many members.

IMHO, My Romance is an overly busy arrangement. Of course, the singing is impeccable, but the beauty of the ballad is confused by the incessant motion in the harmony. Still a 90s performance though.

The thing that drove me out of barbershop was the jackasses that have to impress everyone with how much they know. I've discovered over the years that those who have the most to say are the least talented. You'll never hear a real champion taking all the cheap shots at a chorus of this class.

With all due respect, I'm surprised you got the silver. The uptune deserved third. Sorry, but it's the truth.

I actually thought it was way more entertaining than VM's uptune. It's not "truth", it's opinion.

    • @walterwhite8267

John Treash You are correct, it is my opinion, along with the panel of judges. They were out of tune throughout most of the uptune, attacks and releases were sloppy while relying on egotistical Gold Medalist Quartets to carry them. It simply didn't work. There was more individual effort instead of a solid unit sound. The 50 point spread is evident of just that.
Not knocking them, they are a great chorus ( I was once a member with a Gold) but didn't rise to the occasion. Too many egos, not enough team.

Walter White I think it quite funny to harp on a group you call egotistical and then drop the whole (I was once a member with a Gold), not to mention using the word "relying," as if that moment was the only planned highlight in the performance. You can drop the phrases "with all due respect" and "not knocking them;" those phrases are unnecessary apologetic qualifiers in an otherwise direct (and resolvedly arrogant in its own right) commentary. You said what you intended to, lose the filter. You are not wrong, there were missed opportunities to be better in tune and at moments the unit sound suffered as a result. The scores across the board were really amazing and there was always the chance that GNU could have taken second place, but there was heart and team here, and it is possible second was the best outcome for the group if there is more humility among them as a result.

Walter White Also, the songs did in fact work. The ballad could be argued to have been the best of the contest. The uptune was electric despite its flaws, which really were fewer that you might imply. The scoring was some of the highest MOH has ever seen. Yes VM won by 50-some. They had a terrifically clear sound and were crisp presenters and from a purely mechanical scoring standpoint deserved their scores. But honestly, being in the audience I felt let down and deflated watching them. I expected to be blown away but I left rather confused about their musical choices as a listener, and scratched my head about the clearly patriotic themes of the uptune. As a musician I would have said, if asked my opinion, that they were clean and little else. GNU, MOH, SOTR, and ZERO8 were all much more fun, albeit lower scoring.

LSDBaritone I didn't realise expressing one's opinion would trigger such a defensive response. To disqualify me by slamming my words " with all due respect" and " not knocking them" only shows your own ignorance as to who was saying them. To call me arrogant was particularly amusing. Please allow me to qualify myself and my "arrogance". I am by no means an expert or a judge, however , I have been involved with this Society since 1972. Starting in Long Beach and finishing with the MOH , and Gold in 1990. This is not an attempt to "brag " about anything, just some background.
On my wall are pictures of the MOH along with articles written, Presidents Award, my original Membership Certification into the Society and my Gold Medal. I never flaunt this award, I REVERE it. It has value to me and anyone who has paid his dues and understands the journey one must take to achieve it.It was an experience that will last my lifetime. I have also performed in countless performances and maintained a healthy relationship with that Chorus.
Understanding that this contest was a showdown that took 24 years to come about was exceptionally exciting for me, and I too was in Las Vegas. Wouldn't have missed it for anything.I had high hopes for the MOH to win that epic contest , but was simply let down by the lack of proper preparation and importance of this contest. Not only that, they had the MOH and half of Westminster combined with the brilliance of Justin Miller, I was simply let down with the musicality. I have seen them perform much better.
I am more critical , not arrogant. My opinion is just as important as yours LSD. To have you label me without warrant was surprising.
Good luck to you and your beautiful hobby/ lifestyle. Yours in Song............
