This song is one of the more vulnerable ones I've written recently. "WE'RE NOT REALLY STRANGERS" is actually named after a card game- an icebreaker/conversation starting game that proved to me how much I absolutely hate the idea of letting people get to know me. And I get the feeling I'm not the only one who feels that way.
You see, it's easy for me to think I'm Something. I'm Self-Sufficient. But in Galatians, Paul says that if I think I'm Something- impervious to temptation, needless of others, strong enough on my own- I've just tricked myself and those around me.
Why push others away? Perhaps we're afraid of being hurt or mistreated or misunderstood. We don't want to show our cards. But over time, the Lord has had to show me that my lack of faith in others isn't really a lack of faith in others at all- it's a lack of faith in Him. It's a lack of faith that God intended us to need those around us to bear our burdens. Letting ourselves accept that we need each other is a step in faith.
So beyond honored to get my brother Ben Lawrence's help on this project. Last year, we put out a song called "rose-colored glasses" that covered the five verses in Galatians after this song's source material. That wasn't intentional. But we'll take it.
