@@SamBao mby but if the song is wack and long to listen to then you wont listen to it. They would have to fill that space with actual music. More than 3 choruses for me and I'm over a song.

When the 45" record was made, it allowed artists to put out short, easily re-playable "singles", usually of their more popular tracks. As tapes and CDs became mainstream, we saw the rise of "radio edits", where songs got shortened so they could fit more plays in an hour. Streaming is the new(ish) wave, people are still adjusting.

I heard a few songs on Spotify that start with a snippet of the chorus even before the intro. Made me think of the technique of making sure people listen to the first 30 seconds of the track without skipping. “SMIB - Pink hair shawty” for example. But that might me more similar to the idea of catching someones attention in the first six seconds of internet audio/video. It’s a way to get the listeners/viewers hyped up as fast as possible, to make sure they don’t immediately skip.

Hey there, this was already a common practice in the music industry since a year ago (this song didn't start it). We had a famous music manager from the Netherlands coming to our school and explained this "formula" or "theory" to us. I don't remember all the examples he gave us but the one I remember was -like a light- from drake.
It's a fact that shorter songs are good for streams because you play it over and over again. There are so many interludes I love and play over and over again. I also won't be surprised if more songs become shorter.
Interesting video. I have to say that it’s not easy to make a good chorus that sticks in your head but it’s not repeated a lot and leaves you wanting more. For me Old Town Road is a perfect example. Love the chorus and it gets in my head without being repeated a lot and it leaves me wanting to hear it again
A Dutch artist called Jacin Trill has been doing this for a while now. He makes short enjoyable songs with a very addictive chorus. You should look him up! He is one of the most innovative Dutch rappers imo especially Happieland and Happieland 2.0 are really nice albums.
One interesting effect of this system I've noticed is on the They Might Be Giants song "Fingertips". It's basically a song of songs, packing 21 short songs into the ~5 minutes of the track's runtime. Now, on the original release of the album, due to shuffle being the hot new feature of the time, all 21 songs were separate tracks. It was also that way on Apple Music originally, but somewhat recently it was changed to only have the combined version, and I bet this monetization stuff is why (since I assume Apple Music doesn't want to be paying 21x the normal rate)
The thing about making the best part of the song (like a chorus or a bridge) not as long as you would like is something I've noticed for a while but never put to much thought into it. Awesome video!!!

I like the little story of success Lil Nas X has going on, but the fact Billboard kicked out his track for a vague reason 'not having any country elements' feels like a sham to me. Great video, Alfo!
