I've been annoying him in comments recently about missing the flintknapping. We need _Flintknapping Fridays_ to go with Mousetrap Monday maybe 1-2x a month.
@@UmmmmmmmWhat : Thanks, because I like watching this stuff as well as the MTM videos. Just maybe Shawn will come up with an obsidian mouse or rat trap.
Shawn, you're probably one of the most sincerest guys on UA-cam. I appreciate you so much. You seem very honest. Thank you for showing us a glimpse of your life and your family. God bless and I hope to continue to enjoy your videos
I did this in an ancient technologies class in college. Definitely wear leather work gloves and eye protection for this… and it takes some practice until you’re able to make something usable and not just shatter a piece down to nothing. But once you get the hang of it it’s a fun thing to get into
Shawn looks and appears like he comes from a Norwegian farm, trustworthy, solid , competent , knowledgeable and hard working, he has my deepest respect
I enjoyed this Shawn, you did a great job demonstrating and explaining this technique. I still have a nice piece of Bern's Green obsidian that you sent to me a few years ago. I love watching your videos.
Awesome please do more videos like this . I watch all your videos .your mouse trap collection is very awesome .napping is such a lost skill . I feel in today's world this kinda video would go far .I thank you much. 👍
I have wanted a piece of obsidian since I was in the 4th grade. I finally figured out where to find it at 65. I'm thankful for the "better late than never" saying. I enjoyed this video, and that sound. I'll remember to stock up on an assortment of Band-Aid bandages, before I try that..
It is really great to see some of the old style content coming back, I have been waiting for this for quite a bit of time. Watched all ads completely through hoping they help generate some activity for you as well. Again Shawn, thanks for bringing back some of the content we old viewers loved and watched avidly. Fingers crossed UA-cam doesn't get persnickety with the monetization this go around. ATB Rick
If you made a quick "field knife" I think it would be pretty cool... Like how to attach the obsidian to a stick piece for a nicer grip. Not an art piece, just a utility knife to make butchering easier.
knapping a blade from the core isn’t too hard. especially with dacite. all you have to do it work your way around the rock’s center in a zig zag pattern, you want to find a flat rock so that there isn’t too much material to thin
Happy to see you do a primitive skills video again. I actually found out about the Puget sound snappers through some of your old videos and I'm Hoping to attend a Knapp in in the near futur.
you do not even know how happy i am to see your primitive videos are back your old videos were the reason I started building bows and flintknapping! so glad to see these videos are back! please keep on posting these type of videos! thank you!
I'm so grateful that your stone age flint knapping videos are coming back. I adore your otzi the ice man and ishi series and i dearly missed these videos. I doubt that any videos involving hunting or animal processing will be making a return but these are certainly good enough.
Hallelujah! Back to the stuff I originally subscribed for. I'm not asking for no more MT Mondays, but PLEASE keep throwing these videos into the mix frequently.
Ancient skills and survival videos are what brought me to your channel - before I got addicted to mousetraps. I really enjoy these videos. In the past you did some ancient grains videos as well, how about more ancient gardening skills videos?
Man this videos are really cool! Your calming voice was already super nice on the mouse trap videos and this is is also super good! Looking forward for more of these
My uncle had a collection of hundreds of arrowheads from his ranch in West Texas. He would go out in the fields after a rain and look for reflections from the Arrowheads that the rain had exposed. West Texas is exceptionally flat, and you can see the light reflected from an arrowhead from a long way off. I wish he could have seen Shawn's masterpiece.
Hey! Another flint napping video! So it was your old videos on flint napping that actually got me to try it for myself, and it was definitely one of the funner hobbies I ever had. Seriously, i appreciate you showing how to do this. It lead to many tiny cuts but also many many hours of enjoyment.
found a perfect arrowhead made of this stone on the shores of lake Berryessa CA. I guess the natives around here used to do exactly the same as you have shown. Thanks Shawn.
I bought a 7" disc of obsidian during our trip to Teotihuacan. The vendors there said the Aztecs would make similar discs for viewing the sun. Yes, they'd hold the disc up against the eye and look directly at the sun.
I used to Knapp stone tools and I loved working with obsidian and glass. When pressure flaking I would sometimes cut my palm when I was careless, but the cuts healed without scars. I have numerous scars from careless use of knives, sharping a machete, lawn mower blade, etc. and they always scarred. But glass and obsidian cuts so perfectly the the skin around the cut often comes back perfectly so there is no scarring, Thanks for this!
More of this stuff - I subbed to the 2nd channel hoping to get some of the videos you were doing back in the day, but it never really went anywhere. I'll watch this stuff all day though.
Wow, the cutting your leather pad was pretty impressive. I’d love to learn that one day, but I don’t think we have any suitable stone in eastern Canada. I miss your old videos with any stuff like this. Primitive techniques for tools, catching food, anything like that, but don’t know if your other viewers would like it too.
I watched Emory do an ishi point and flute a paleo with a 8" flute on both sides. He does amazing work, he was losing his eyesight from an accident, do you know how he is doing? I have a big knapping pit in N.E Wa, I have even shot a bear with actual precious fire obsidian. Thank you for the video, perfect to foreword to a few people as an example. I love knapping the midnight lace and mahogany. 👍
This brings me back to when I started watching your channel. I remember the authentic Native American arrow and some other things. I’ve always appreciated the genuine respect you have for the culture. How was the eagle corn project? Have you grown any of your own? Btw I’m a Menominee from WI.
Happy to see some flintknapping, loved those older videos were you just gathered up a bunch of junk glass, (some as old as the 40s I think?) and knapped it into arrowheads. Definitely my favourites next to the actual mousetraps.
Great to see you getting back into some primitive survival skills. I loved your old flint knapping videos. While it's always preferable to go into a potential survival situation with the proper gear, having these skills means you'll never be without a blade -- with this knowledge, you'll always have one, in your head.
Your obsidian spear head reminded me of a book that I read as a child, The Black Spearman by Pitt L. Fitzgerald, a story of the builders of the Great Mounds. written in 1939

Really appreciate the information. I had full knee replacement 9 days ago. Trying to learn everything I can about flint knapping. Terry Greenway.
Great practical advice
Much appreciated. Are there any mousetraps using obsidian blades out there? Should be interesting!
That could get a bit messy.

That was unbelievably sharp!! D=
Thanks Shawn for the educational demonstration
I really love it when I learn something new and cool unexpectedly. Great explanation and demonstration. Two big thumbs up.
I bought a 7" disc of obsidian during our trip to Teotihuacan. The vendors there said the Aztecs would make similar discs for viewing the sun.
Yes, they'd hold the disc up against the eye and look directly at the sun.
They used it for swords.
Before you can make the stone tools, you have to have the stone. A video on how to find suitable stone would be great.
Shawn, another great video as usual! Now I have to find a chunk of Obsidian and start making some tools! 🙂
I’ve been waiting for years for this style of video to come back! 🥰
Good to see you getting back to your roots with a flint knapping video
I recently tried shaving with obsidian. lol
It was an interesting experience.
Nice. Always wanted to try this.
Yes... back to the old stuff.
And I've watched all your mouse videos for years.
Appreciate your videos.
I'm glad to see you back on the knap Mr. woods. Keep at it!

Hello from Detroit Michigan brother thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise
What would you suggest in a country that does not have obsidian, such as Finland?
Finland has lots of quartz. Crystalline silica, i.e., quartz, cristobalite and tridymite are abundant in rocks and minerals.
@@benthere8051 What we do have in abundance is granite and gneiss. both of which very much useless for the purposes described in this video.
the large blade looks awesome .
