Yah he did it in the original music video as well. He does it more awkward here lol as if he thinks he's not gonna catch it, since he barely moves his upper body. The music video version is done much smoother of course, and honestly looks cool... It is done at like 2-3 seconds before he sings again, so it maybe is timed badly to do it for a live performance. Looks like he does it to catch the mic in sync with the drum beat.
