Have you heard of the Kitson 0F? It was an 0-4-0ST built by Kitson & Co. 5 built in 1932. BR built another 5 at Horwich. They were withdrawn from 1963 to 1966 and none were preserved. One of them appears in the Railway Series as the character of Pug.
I recently bought a saddle tank locomotive from my local Model Railway Shop. It was a Hornby Collector's Club Loco in 2006, and the man sold it to me for just £10! It is the "Queen Elizabeth ll 80" locomotive when Queen Elizabeth ll turned 80 in 2006. To say it is 14 years old, it runs absolutely beautifully, and if I didn't know it was 14 years old, I'd say it was brand new. I like your videos, but this type especially. I feel that the balance between viewing the locomotives and you providing us with information about them is perfect. Well done you!! Model Railway Review
A nicely done little loco history lesson on your saddle tanks Sam. I love the LMS 0F 0-4-0 Pug myself as they are cutie tiny locomotive that can go any where on a layout, tho points can be an issue. I enjoyed this video of mini marvels after being away these last months. I haven't been great as all this C19 pandemic and non social contact has made me a hermit and alone at home. Then other issues that have been happening around me with family etc. Any way it is time to get back in the saddle (sic) again, brave the rails, and let of some steam, lol. Plus loads of UA-cam videos to catch up on. Thanks Sam for your love of sharing all things model railway with us in these vlogs.
Thanks a lot John - yeah I really like those too, let's hope we get a new model of those one day! So sorry to hear you haven't been doing too well - hopefully this will all be over before too long :( Thanks for watching - Sam :)
That was a very interesting running session Sam, clearly showing the wide range of locos and running capabilities now being achieved....Thanks as always...Bob
I belive the photogrey livery was used as sort of "primer" or "burner" coat before the engine was greenlit for mainline service. The grey coat was somewhat easier to apply and showed any possible faults or leaks during test runs, after testing the locos were painted in their final intricate liveries and entered service. Great video as always!
I love the Beatie Well Tank both as a Loco at Bodmin and Wenford and as a Kernow model, but I was pleased to see the Old Hornby Tank, after a Britania Trainset for Christmas in 1960 (wow), my dad said while we were playing trains 'we need a saddle tank', a lovely little tank engine and I'v had a fondness for all tank engines ever since.
This is gonna get spookier. Prepare to be frightened. Last night, around midnight, I purchased a model engine online from Kernow Model Rail Centre. The model engine in question is exactly the same Saddle Tank Engine in Photographic Grey Livery, no. 1361, as you've got. She hasn't been delivered to my door yet, and I've already given her a name: Spookie the Ghost Engine. That's why I can feel a slight chill of excitement chasing itself down my spine. Thankyou for inspiring me to purchase this spooky engine for myself.
A very enjoyable video. I love my little DJ models 1361 purchased following your review. Thank you! I have been so enthralled by it, it runs on Valendorf, my German outline HO layout!
Great video Sam! Now you got me thinking about doing up my port section of the layout now seeing all these saddle engines and talking about docks and ports.
My favorite saddletank engine is the B&O Class C-16 "Little Joe" which worked the the dock areas of Baltimore and Philadelphia. They were 0-4-0 types and known as the "Dockside" to model railroaders in the US. I think I have an unbuilt kit of one somewhere in my basement.
So happy you included the pug, I have one too but mines from 1999, were as if i remember correctly yours is the modern one which hornby brought out in this years range. I also spotted that ICI tanker, a little history from where I live lol. Keep it up sam,the videos are awesome.
Amazing running session with all of your Saddle Tank Engines you’ve owned in your collection! My favorite Saddle Tank engines you’ve shown in this video are the W4 Peckett, the B2 Peckett, the 1361 Class, the J94, and the J13, those 5 are such gorgeous Saddle Tank locomotives! You can definitely tell that these are Saddle Tank locomotives because they got a curvy shape on the boiler, I know I particular Thomas & Friends character that has a saddle tank and that’s Percy! But overall, nice running session you made! 😃👍
An amazing video sam. Really like the history of all the locomotives used. Really like the wide variety of locomotives and rolling stock used. Can not wait to see more videos like this. Take care of yourself.
Great video. It's nice to see lots of similar locos running together. Just as a side note, when double heading, prototypically, you would have the loco with the smaller wheel diameter at the front and if the wheels are the same, you would have the smaller loco at the front.
But its depends of the design, some Andrew Barclays stores the coal on board in the cab, others like pugs had it in special made tiny bunkers attached to the front of the cab.
I think saddle tanks look cuter than side, well or pannier tanks. You said about a difficulty with the saddle tank is access to the boiler. This is not a difficult as you may think. The tank is easily lifted off the boiler using an overhead gantry or localised crane, leaving easy access to the boiler. You mention that the advantage of saddle tank was that it pre-heated the water. What you may not realise is that this helped reduce corrosion of boiler tubes. The warmer the water the less oxygen is present in the water and in turn the less pitting corrosion occurs.
8:21 that 0-6-0 looks like it's still in a grey/gray primer, as if someone at Swindon forgot to paint it in "Middle Chrome Green" or something like that
Hey Sam! Have you heard that Train Sim World 2 is releasing on the 6th August? It will bring the CSX Sand Patch Grade to console, as well as adding the Bakerloo Line and the Köln Schnellfahrstrecke. It will also add custom scenarios and liveries
Even though I don't own any, I do like saddle tanks, then Pannier tanks then side tanks. As you have probably guessed by now, I am also a fan of smaller branch lines because I don't have a lot of room for a large layout.
Very nice Sam. The little Pug would be my favourite. I remember trying to buld an Airfix kit of a Pug many years ago. Don't think I made a very good job of it though! Thanks again.
I have 2-off 0-4-0ST ex-L&Y "Pugs" and an 0-6-0ST ex-LNER J94 as well as quite a lot of side-tank engines. Was quite uncertain which of the two types to vote for in your poll but opted for the little ones as the S&D had one (or more??) in BR days.
Saddle tanks are beautiful. My favourite has to be the pecketts. I have the b2 Sherwood livery like yours and the w 4 lin black livery. I thought they might not be good double heading but after viewing your video I will double head mine. They are a lovely model great quality great running and great value. Might buy one or two more in time.. Great video Sam take care Basil.
Bit of a fun fact from me, but at a model train show in my home town in the US, I found loads of old Hornby, Triang, and even modern Bachmann stock. But the only thing I bought was a kit for the Andrew Barclay 0-4-0st by DJH models that pre-dates the model from Hatton's but about 20 years! I haven't built it yet, but I'm starting on it soon.
My Saddle Peckett 0-6-0 "Westminster" - Hornby's newest release - is going to be VERY hard to beat as a tank engine, even if I pick up some others! Looks so good
It's the wheel profile that causes the Triang loco(s) to stall on point-work. The clearance over the Hornby or Peco frogs means the wheel in contact with the frog gets pushed upwards as 10:15 clearly shows. This fault tends to show even more clearly when the leading wheels are part of a bogie or pony truck. In those cases derailments are often likely to occur.
Yes you're right - but I've modified most of my tri-ang stock now so as to have smaller flanges - I obviously thought the saddle tank wasn't bad enough to need it! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
You want to learn more about he photographic grey? Ok here is a bit of history about it... Before colour photography they applied the livery for sharper and more detailed on black and white photos
You lack my favorite, Varney/Rivarossi/LifeLike saddle tank dockside “Little Joe” from US “Baltimore & Ohio” railroad...my first train set had it and is still my favorite loco. Great video as usual but loved today’s topic specially. Thanks
Some lovely engines, but the humble little triang engine stole the show I think. For me it's my dad's old princess Victoria that has a special place in my heart. And on my desk. A faithful little runner.
Hi Sam it's alfie hope your feeling good I just thought of a new video idea so if u remember I said it would be cool to review the class 390 pendalino but because sadly Virginia trains is gone u could review the virgin pendalino and u could make a video about virgin trains is sadly gone and u can have the class 390 pendalino and the voyage and run them round your railway and say a bit about virgin and it's very sad it's gone or something like that. Anyway hopefully u stay safe and have a good one. Alfie :D p.s I also like the saddle tank it's so round and small
Hey Alfie, yes thanks mate - hope you're doing well! Yes that would be awesome - I'll keep an eye out for one definitely! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam. Such a Great video it is good to see other little engines. they are all great i can't pick a favourite. I have had a think. maybe doing a running session of last years of steam or odd wheel configuration. Cheers Liam
Hi Sam, awesome video. Out of the ones you showed in the video, my favourite is the B2 Peckett. This doesn’t have anything to do with saddle tanks but have you ever thought about reviewing/unboxing the hornby eurostar train set? Can’t wait for the live stream on Sunday- Cal :)
My favourites are the GWR 6400 class pannier tank engines and the 4-6-4T CNR engines, none of which are saddle tank engines of course but in this group I would give the nod to the J13.
Spookie the Ghost Engine, no. 1361, has arrived. It took me some minutes to fit the front and back coupling hooks, but they're on now. She has sprung buffers, which is what you prefer, her bufferbeams are black and her safety valve bonnet is the colour of her body and cab. This is common in real life. There are some Great Western Engines around that have painted Safety Valve bonnets instead of the brass ones, which we're more familiar with. I haven't tested her yet, but I'll give you an update tomorrow. I'm all a-quiver with excitement. Watch out for a new Ghost Train video if you're not too terrified.
My favorite one should be the GER in the lovely green, but it is not my favorite. My favorite is sitting in her box, where she has been for more than 30 years in the loft of my father's house and she carries the nickname of "smelly" because of the smell she emitted while she was running, it is, of course, the Triang Saddle Tank. After the first layout was made when I was only 6 and my older brother was 7 we had her as a Christmas present along with a Jinty. That would have been 1962, but I believe it was made earlier than that. Martin. (Thailand)
I love saddle tanks. I believe that photographic grey engines wouldn't have left the workshops before getting their proper livery I can't imagine they'd even steam them in that condition as it would make painting the real livery a real pain.
Would love Hornby to give the LNER J52 a 21st century make over. Ticks all the boxes being pre-grouping, grouping and BR locomotives. Plus one is preserved and I think there were variants with open cabs
Wouldn't have been very long Sam. If its picture was taken at Swindon it would have gone straight back inside the works to be painted in gw green because I think the grey livery was just an undercoat. Anyway..thats a nice selection you have Sam..nice one.
I have a Hornby Pug and it won’t run.I have had it apart numerous times and have finally come to the conclusion that the worm drive from the vertical motor is too tight a fit with the axle gear.It is on static display on my layout and it is cute
They are nice locomotives. I have the old Castle Donington 0-4-0ST loco from the CD power station. I was born in the village. I would like the CD class 56 but they are a bit expensive and I don't have DCC yet.
If anybody’s wondering what the yellow saddle tank engine is called a b2 peckett oo model by hornby It comes in yellow green and blue although yellow is really hard to find
If I had room for a layout, I'd definitely have an 0-4-0 Peckett, one of those beautiful little 'Pug' engines, and possibly a Hunslet Austerity. That would have to be in War Department livery, though. I was never very interested in big engines pulling coaches - small engines and wagons, most definitely interest me, though. The largest engine of any kind I'd want would be the intriguing 0-6-0 'Q' type. Possibly my all time favourite steam engine. It's all business, and simply raw power. Ugly, yes, but I love it.
I've owned one of those 1950s saddles since 1957! Lovely to see yours running.
Ahh fantastic Keith - yes I love running those Tri-ang locos! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Ooh awesome - hope you enjoy it!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam'sTrains oh I am. Already on eBay looking for some wagons
Firstly, excellent video Sam 👍👍
My choices of saddle tanks for me is the Peckett 0-4-0s & 0-6-0s, and the GWR 1361 Class as they have nice designs.
Thanks very much Joe - and good choice, those are awesome! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
My own favourite is the 1361, but I do have a liking for the later pannier version (1366).
Good choice Dave - yeah the Panniers look good too, I'm reluctant to buy a Heljan one though, for obvious reasons!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
My favourites are the GWR 6400 class pannier tank engines and the 4-6-4T CNR engines, none of which are saddle tank engines of course but in this group I would give the nod to the J13.
Great choice there Dan - I'll have to look those up! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Fantastic Kelly - do you enjoy it? They are lovely! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Martin. (Thailand)
Ahh yes tricky to decide! Ahh lovely to hear that - must be some good memories from those days! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Awesome video today Sam my favourite saddle Tank has to be Percy lol
Thanks very much James - good choice mate! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I remember the J94 from an OpenTTD NewGRF called UK Railway Set or UKRS2. It's called the 0-6-0 Austerity.
Ooh really?! That's cool! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I love saddle tanks. I believe that photographic grey engines wouldn't have left the workshops before getting their proper livery I can't imagine they'd even steam them in that condition as it would make painting the real livery a real pain.
Thanks mate for letting me know - yeah that makes sense!!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I liked the w4 and also the andrew barclay in blue behind ur side tank loco XD
Glad to hear that - yeah those are awesome! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thanks for the vids. You inspired me to create my own UA-cam channel. 👍
Great UA-cam channel mate its amazing
luke Rothwell thanks. That means a lot. 👍
That's amazing - hope you do well with it mate! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thank you very much, I now know what my War Deprtment liveried saddletank is, a J94
Ahh fantastic - glad you know now! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Would love Hornby to give the LNER J52 a 21st century make over. Ticks all the boxes being pre-grouping, grouping and BR locomotives. Plus one is preserved and I think there were variants with open cabs
Absolutely - I'd really like to see that too! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
some very smart locos in there!
Thanks Davis! :D
Peckett 0-4-0 is our favoured one. Currently looking for one aswell.
Great choice - those are wonderful! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Brilliant video sam! Sorry that im late, i was making a siding for a tank engine on my model railway
No problem mate - hope it went well for you! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I like saddle tanks they look funny and are stubby and small. Great video. You kept mentioning a poll but I don't see any poll. Haha
haha I agree with you - I love them too! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I think the 1361 might well be my favourite loco full stop.
Ooh good choice - they do look amazing! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Great video. You missed one special saddle tank loco which was the caledonian pug that Smokey Joe is based on.
Thanks very much Ben - ahh yes you're right!!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Wouldn't have been very long Sam. If its picture was taken at Swindon it would have gone straight back inside the works to be painted in gw green because I think the grey livery was just an undercoat. Anyway..thats a nice selection you have Sam..nice one.
Duly noted Tim - I had a feeling that would be the case!!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Love to see your Birdseye and pork wagons , hard to beat old school
haha thank you! I need to get those going a bit more often really! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam I love trains I have loved them for my whole life and I have a model railway too
Hey Fred - great to hear that mate! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
14:45 That one made me instantly think of (Percy)
Probably because of the design of it
haha yeah - it does look like him!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I have a Hornby Pug and it won’t run.I have had it apart numerous times and have finally come to the conclusion that the worm drive from the vertical motor is too tight a fit with the axle gear.It is on static display on my layout and it is cute
Ahh sorry to hear that - yes I wasn't very impressed with the quality of that mechanism :(
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Nice video Sam this is perfect for young people in the hobby
Thanks very much Ryan!! :D
The black 748 engine is a SE&CR S class 0-6-0ST I did the research and photo comparisons.
Ooh very nice, thanks for letting me know Dominic!!
Happy New Year - Sam :)
Fun fact a saddle tank engine was named ‘Asbestos’ due to the cargo it used to pull it is now in the National Collection.
haha, that's just laughable today isn't it?!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I have finally decided to start a model railway and it it the Highlander rambler which is a Seattle tank. Also love the vids
Ooh awesome - hope you enjoy that mate! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
They are nice locomotives. I have the old Castle Donington 0-4-0ST loco from the CD power station. I was born in the village. I would like the CD class 56 but they are a bit expensive and I don't have DCC yet.
Thank you!! Ooh that does sound cool! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
there's a W4 driving in Maldegem heritage railway, Belgium, under the name "Fred" :D
If anybody’s wondering what the yellow saddle tank engine is called a b2 peckett oo model by hornby It comes in yellow green and blue although yellow is really hard to find
Ahh duly noted, thanks for this Keith!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains it was because i like the model
If I had room for a layout, I'd definitely have an 0-4-0 Peckett, one of those beautiful little 'Pug' engines, and possibly a Hunslet Austerity. That would have to be in War Department livery, though. I was never very interested in big engines pulling coaches - small engines and wagons, most definitely interest me, though. The largest engine of any kind I'd want would be the intriguing 0-6-0 'Q' type. Possibly my all time favourite steam engine. It's all business, and simply raw power. Ugly, yes, but I love it.
Yeah that would be a great choice - they're wonderful! Maybe you could do a bit of a shelf layout or something?! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
