    I thought your cows were interesting. There were two that I could readily recognize by their heads and the rest just became cows because I knew what they were. I enjoy all types of water color and think your abstract/impressionistic cows fit the scene perfectly. Also after seeing your sketch of Eilean Donan Castle (which I liked by the way) I don't feel as bad about the way mine always turn out. I think that because I have loved the pictures of that castle for so many years I put too much pressure on myself. I expect perfection and of course receive the results of the beginner I am. It was good for me to see that the castle doesn't have to be photo realistic to be good. Thank you for sharing your sketchbooks.

    Thanks for the encouragement, Patrick. I live in the Pacific Northwest in Washington and have been doing sketches for a bit in the same books you use. Sometimes it's hard to get going and I started to use an ink pen first. I saw a few called ink and wash and was trying that but the ink sort of ruins the feeling. Do you just use watercolor alone? I've been doing sort of character sketches of our politicians (so can find some humor in the situation). I've rather enjoyed getting the essence of each one in a comical way. I really enjoy all your videos! There is no stress involved and they are freeing for me.

    How do you avoid being noticed by people around that you're sketching and painting? My sketchbook is all drawn with pencil and fountain pen because i don't dare to color it in public...

    • @PatrickLeyGreaves
      @PatrickLeyGreaves  7 років тому +1

      vanezcha you can't really avoid being noticed in public places. If you find it difficult go somewhere very quiet initially until your used to working with colour outside. You'll soon get the confidence to paint anywhere. Let's be honest does it really matter if it all goes wrong it's just a piece of paper. The more pressure you put upon yourself the harder it becomes. Just relax and have fun.

      @BigBlueSky123 7 років тому +3

      vanezcha Try watercolour brushes with water reservoir - this way you don't need a water container. And use just a small set of colours. This way you keep your equipment to a minimum and nobody would even notice you painting.

    Patrick, it is like you narrate my own thoughts!
    I appreciate these kinds of paintings as much is (if not more than) the more complete studio ones. They have so much life and spontaneity, as they capture the bare essence of the subject.
    I wanted to ask you a question. Do you sketch them out before painting, or do you go in straight away with the brush? (for some of them it's clear they were planned with a sketch, but I wonder especially regarding the simpler ones - like the fields and beach).
    Thanks a lot for sharing this, I LOVE sketchbooks :D

    Patrick, the one page you mentioned was a copy of a famous artist's painting reminded me of a scene painted by John Hoar in a DVD I have.. Thanks so much for showing these books. I've been sketching like this for years, esp. when I travel and the books make for great memories and records of my travel. Like you, I can recall the day I painted a page and any story associated with the time. It does not appear that you are drawing first in pencil, correct? Also I don't recall seeing any that were ink and wash. All were quite loose which also forces one to simplify. Great practice and encouragement for all of us!
