@@only3975 I know London has one of the most extensive CCT systems in the world and other British cities are not far behind. They were installed long before the mention of 15-minute cities or even Covid but were for crime deterrents and easier criminal capture. There are many real-life crime shows showing the use of these cameras. Were the people arrested during the Covid outbreak fined for leaving their area or for needlessly being out when a quarantine was in effect? I can see if and when a city declares itself a 15-minute city the cameras being used for this purpose. That is why we have to become more vocal and get away from the so-called Woke agenda which has been corrupted from its original goal into a poor me attitude.

Diverse, privately owned small shops and services serving their communities, but then the powers that be gutted our commercial squares by promoting Wlamart and various other big box outlets. Now all that is within 15 minutes of where I live are weed shops, beer n wine stores, thrift and used discount shops, pawn shops and 2 homeless shelters. Work, doctors, etc, are so far beyond the 15 minutes that driving is a necessity. Groceries are out to lunch price wise at the local Sobeys, so Costco it is for the brunt of grocery shopping, and cheaper gas, too. Oh, no gas stations in this area. Of course the old neighborhood stores were priced out of existence by the large chain stores, so would this mean a Walmart in every neighborhood? Id rather see a good local farmers market in each quadrant, it would be a short drive , but still doable on a bike, at least in 3 seasons, 4 if you have studded bike tires. But I see the point Chris Sky is making, and like him I have no trust in our Governments. I live in St. Albert, my parents who I care for live in Sherwood park, my in-laws live in the country and are currently dealing with terminal cancer and my kids are going to be living in Edmonton while they attend post-secondary. If my mobility is limited, all of these people who rely on my help will be in crisis.
Also forgot to mention that I own a cleaning business that services rental properties all over Edmonton and surrounding area. How do businesses deal with this? Do we have to pay for permits?
How would have it feel being limited to the lowest level/highest crime zone. If you were born in a crappy zone, is that your caste? What would that do to a child’s chances of ever crawling out of that zone. Definitely gives me Hunger Games vibes. This plan will further destroy social cohesion.

First, I should say I'm in Calgary, so I'm watching with a somewhat detached interest at this point. I have no problem of course with having most services being available within a 15 minute walk or bike ride. My concern begins if they start penalising people for leaving their zone or restricting the type of vehicle they're allowed to drive. I believe freedom to move and to choose is important. Education, not legislation, should be used to influence people's behaviour and then let them decide for themselves.

On the 15-minute cities issue, we need to look at what is happening in Britain right now, proposed for Oxford, Canterbury, Bath, Edinburgh, and many other places. Cities divided into districts, cameras everywhere monitoring when vehicles cross boundaries between those districts, with (Oxford) only 100 crossings per year allowed before every crossing attracts a ~50 pound fine. This is a great way for municipalities to make money! Traffic is already becoming much more congested and often hopelessly gridlocked, so travel times extend, and pollution gets worse. Removal of parking and closure of streets has been disrupting businesses because their customers can no longer get to them. This is likely to be an even bigger problem in Canada, because population densities are so much lower than in the UK or Europe: in many situations, it is unlikely that there will be enough custom to support all retail services which it is proposed should be available. Certainly not as neighbourly small stores, as proponents tend to suggest--maybe as banks of cashless vending machines made accessible through QR-ID codes and facial recognition, as touted in China. Or at some point we may all be told that if our districts cannot support the suppliers we need, well, we must just order online from Amazon and have our goods delivered by drones. The potentials for coerced, dystopian inefficiency are enormous in these cases.
In the UK, through preliminary defining of LTNs (Low Traffic Neighbourhoods), restrictions are already trapping people who are not able to walk or cycle for everything (older, disabled, women having to manage small children) and creating problems for both business traffic and emergency vehicles and public transit.
And bottom line: a lot of the dystopian potentials here can't be called conspiracy theories. The organizations promoting them--start with the WEF and C40 Cities--are perfectly naked about what they want to impose on the world:
    No private cars
Diets all plant-based (C40 cities are to aim for no more than 16 kg meat per person per year)
No more than 3 new pieces of clothing per year
...and once you have a cashless system with digital ID, you can be shut down at any time under a Chinese-style social credit system.
I don't care how prettily any level of government tries to paint these initiatives, the handwriting is up too boldly and clearly on too many organizations' Internet walls, the potentials for them to end up imprisoning and coercing us is just too clear.
After the way our freedoms have been abused the past 3 years, there is no way to trust any level of government. There are just too damn many nannying authoritarians around, determined to restrict us "for our own good".

I grew up with the convenience stores, places close to home and I enjoy that convenience when 15 minute cities were normal. Then big companies took over and the neighbourhood places almost disappeared. Now they want to go back to what we had. Climate change is controlled over 50% by China and India emissions not by North America or Europe. And the Sun goes through cycles but the government never talks about the sun or those countries that are major contributor to our climate. However, the government has shown us it’s about control.

I believe that the concept of 15 min cities is in reality the framework of infrastructure for the possible future of a surveillance state, leaving those within them susceptible to further control by the implementation of social credit systems, digital ids, travel restriction and control over the access of goods and services. Rather than oversite, planning and design by those in power with additional rules, how about deregulation on zoning and construction to allow the growth of small business in these areas so that community demands can be met through free market principals. Sadly governments of any type seem to always want more power and enrichment through taxation and control rather than deregulation or the enforcement of existing policy or systems.

no 15 minute cities. if they slit up the cities already formed, how will you have access to everything you need. what about rich areas we won't be able to go there. what about being able to move to places you want to live or work. family members that live away from you. you can't see them when you want. there is so many problems with this also it just another way to control people.

I will not participate in any WEF 15 minute cities. I will sell everything and leave the country let alone, the city or the province!!! Welcome to 1984!

The real question to ask about the 15 minute city is about density. How many people are supposed to live in a one mile square area? 25,000 or 50,000 or 100,000?! That is the real issue. It’s being sold as quaint and convenient with really glossy photos. Trust has been lost because all levels of government are not accountable.

With these people in charge, it is totally for more control. Combined it with Digital ID and you have the perfect prison .

No, I don’t agree with the 15 minute cities, they are part of this plan that the WEF has. The people that live in that city have to work in its shop visit do everything they want to do within that 15 minutes city. In my understanding, they’re allowed to leave the city only a certain number of times a year. Now having everything at your fingertips does sound good but I don’t like what it’s going to represent in the coming future along with the digital IDs digital currency and now the WEF is calling to ration meet for people. When do you think this is going to go

I support incentives to take public transir, bike downtown, but oppose blocking off of major streets to vehicles or punitive measures against drivers

With regards to the notion of "15 minute cities" proposed for any municipality in North America:
If my city had mostly "mixed use" zoning with medium rise apartment blocks with ground floor retail like most of Europe and Asia I'd think it would be possible to implement, yes possible ... however; I'd still have reservations if there's going to be all these prohibitions/restrictions that are rumored to be in the works, I mean don't the people get their say in a democracy (like is this a non-binding ideal to shoot for or a set of controls to implement harshly)? That said, let's be clear to point out that nearly all North American cities are sprawling masses of single family detached homes sitting in exclusively single use residential zones necessitating car usage (things are too spread out horizontally, stores and services are quite far away from the 'burbs i.e. literally nothing is 15 minutes away by foot for most and by design I might add! A legacy if you will, not going to get into that). If zoning is not changed en masse this will never work, unless they're going to implement it gulag style (it still won't work, I suspect ulterior motives eh?). If you change the zoning I surmise it could take maybe 30-50 years of gradual market shift towards more efficiency if people even want this. Also do investors/builders want to build more densely populated rental projects when eviction laws in a lot of jurisdictions make the whole idea rather undesirable? Assuming they try to force implement the nasty version, well this is where all the trouble starts. Just springing 15 minute cities on North Americans out of the blue, it's practically terrorism! What are all the multitudes of home equity holders and yes car owners (i see you Chris Sky!) supposed to think? I'm all for making the cities more efficient (just look at some in the Netherlands, Spain or Vietnam on UA-cam or Google maps - Street View) but this can't reasonably be done here in N.A. overnight. So I should dust myself off from the shock and honestly laughter, and try to learn more about what is actually proposed. But in Edmonton after Blatchford especially I already have little confidence in the last batch of planners, Lord help us with the WEF affiliated/infiltrated ones. Heh I hope my points are intelligible, struggling with this currently...

Also why are 15 minute cities happening worldwide at the same time.? 🤨
