Today we look at the unlikely Veteran's Day Weekend tornado outbreak of 2002, the Van Wert F4 tornado, and how the weather insanity unfolded over the course of 36 hours. Videos of the Van Wert tornado and subsequent damage were complied into a video produced by Kyle Heppeard and directed by Rick McCoy. Credit was given to the individuals who themselves filmed the tornado. High quality footage was made available to the public by Blake Naftel.

I recently found a diary from my childhood where I greatly exaggerated my very first brush with a tornado. With that entry date fresh in mind, it wasn’t until just now that I realized my whole obsession with tornadoes was sparked by the GA end of this outbreak. I’ve seen the episode of Storm Stories so many times and never connected the dots!

      😅😅
Lots of tornado talk in my childhood journals, too. (I was a little obsessed, TBH.) Although I never have experienced or even seen one, I've been through some warned storms that were bad even without an actual tornado touching down.
Throughout my life, I lived in Ohio on April 3, 1974; I lived in Alabama in April 27, 2011, and in both instances, I lived in a different part of the states to where the tornadoes were wreaking havoc, but, that's "close enough for government work, drive in movies, and rock n roll." 😉
I'll have to look up some of my younger years journals, and share my overdramatic weather musings with the world. 😅

Another excellent video. I was working the late afternoon/evening shift at the Weather Channel that day. Right after I arrived I checked in with the producer to get a brief on the day's stories. "It's been a busy afternoon with some tornadoes," she said. "Worst place hit so far has been a town in northwest Ohio called Van Wert."
She later told me she could see the blood drain from my face. My wife's parents lived just east of the city. I rapidly excused myself and called her, telling her to check with her parents. Fortunately for them, the twister tracked on the west and north sides of town and they had escaped unscathed.
We went up to see them for Thanksgiving a couple of weeks later, and my wife and I drove around viewing the damage. I distinctly remember seeing high tension towers folded over like a child had stomped on an erector set. We drove by a large farm field, and noticed there was a white van in the middle of it, several hundred feet from the adjoining roads.
    It hadn't been driven there.
Fall tornadoes are no stranger to western Ohio. In addition to the Van Wert storm, Arcanum in Darke County was hit by an EF3 on 22 November 1992. When you live in areas susceptible to severe weather, it's wise to keep the weather radio ready to go even outside of the "normal" times when it occurs.
    Happy holidays to all!

My brother was in the National Door and Trim factory when it collapsed on him. He had headphones on because he was working with a bandsaw and didn’t hear the tornado sirens. When the building started shaking he ran to try and get out of the building, but didn’t make it. He dived under a stairway, which saved his life, but he had to be extracted from the building using the “jaws” of life.

Adding to that, there’s still signs of the tornado if you look closely. Like in the video, German Church Rd is mentioned. It passed very close to my church out there and there’s a line of trees with a large gap in the middle of it from that tornado. It’s crazy to still see signs two decades later.

I remember this outbreak. I was living in Erie, PA at the time, and I think it was the evening of the 10th, My wife and I had just finished helping a friend plant trees in her farm, and had just stopped for pizza at our favorite pizza shop, and I had noticed how strange the weather had gotten all of the sudden. I remember the tornado watch being issued, and a few tornado warnings to the south of us in Crawford/mercer counties, so we took our pizza to go, and headed back home. The storms hit Erie not long after we got home.

Amazing video. I was living in Tiffin at the time of this outbreak, and I will never forget that day. Honestly wasn't expecting you to mention us, but I'm sure glad you did. We had close family friends lose everything to that tornado. I was just a young child, born and raised in Tiffin, and I'll never forget when I first saw the picture that you featured in this video. I still have some of the old newspapers from that day featuring that picture. I've always wondered myself if there were other pictures or angles of that tornado, but as far as I'm aware there are none. That was the one that really made the rounds. Tiffin's a small, quiet town, and nothing ever really happens there, so this was one of those things that really threw us off guard. It tested us as a community though; people were helping other people, and everyone was looking after those who lost their homes. We went out the day following to help sift through some of the wreckage. In the years following, we didn't get much else as far as tornadoes go, but we definitely took warnings a lot more seriously from that point on.

I grew up just a few miles north of Van Wert. I was 11 when this outbreak happened and remember it well. We spent the night at my grandparents’ house playing cards, because they had a cellar, and their windows rattled the whole night. I’ve associated Van Wert with tornadoes ever since that night and have always refused to live there as a result. That photo of the movie theater was on the front page of every area paper.
My dad and I drove through the tiny village of Roselms the next day. There was nothing left. Those images will stick with me forever.
We don’t get outbreaks often, but when we do they pack a punch. It’s so flat here that it feels like the tornadoes can go on forever.
Excellent video! It brought up a lot of memories.

In my personal view, December 13th was even more wild and weird. A mid-morning tornado outbreak is really unusual in our part of Texas. I was awakened by a tornado warning and looked outside my window, and the rain was so heavy and thick it looked like a white wall. Fortunately, we didn't have a tornado in our area; unfortunately, an EF2 tracked from Blue Ridge to Leonard.

I grew up in Leipsic, Ohio and was 11 years old at the time. Leipsic is about 14 miles away from Continental (where it lifted) and about 35ish miles from Van Wert. Growing up storms typically moved north east, so if Van Wert got it, we got it too as my home town is almost due north east of them. On this day, the storms decided to go more north than normal. I have a very vivid memory of this because I had never seen my parents freak out so badly. They were very worried about the damages we were hearing. It's really not all that uncommon in NW Ohio to get tornados, but normally they are F0 or F1, and we take them seriously as we don't have a basement and live in an older home. I remember my dad was home that weekend, which was rare because normally he would pick up extra shifts at work, and he was trying to stay calm. You could feel it in the air, something was different, he was on edge way more than normal and fidgeting a lot. It's not uncommon for Van Wert to get a tornado warning, so we thought it was just another storm that hit the boarder and blew up. No, it wasn't. We could hardly believe our ears when it said F4 and the damage reports started rolling in. Everyone knows everyone out in those small farm communities, and that day shook us all.

I lived in delphos at the time. You could literally see the sky being “eaten” by the van wert tornado. Every single cloud was being absorbed by it and it was sunny in delphos once that tornado touched down. Woah this brings back some memories! I remember i was 9 years old and lived in Columbus Ohio. It was so wild what transpired that night. For years i thought it may have been a quick spin up of a touch and go tornado but now i think it was straight line winds from that line of chaos. To this day its the loudest thing i have ever witnessed. We lost power for a whole week, our house was only built the year before, so they were still building homes behind ours and the winds flipped a construction trailer onto a dump truck. My neighbor 2 doors down had his chimney ripped off and thrown into the middle of our street. I remember it crushed my elementary schools fencing due to huge trees that fell. We also had debris from a few neighborhoods away in our neighborhood, and the Columbus Dispatch had in the newspaper that my neighborhood had the most and worst damage from that one storm there. It was insane! This year was 20 years. We still have our photo album of pictures my mom took with a Kodak camera. Its crazy to see what happened in Van Wert! That imfamous dashcam footage of the wedge! Ill never forget!

My family survived the 1999 Jan 21-22 tornado outbreak in Arkansas. They were in White County - I was born there later that year.
That was the largest tornado outbreak in Arkansas history. My parents say my (7 at the time) brother was almost decapitated by the bathroom mirror, which broke off in shards and went right through the wall and into his room and out the other wall - my dad had just grabbed my panicking brother and pulled him out of the room the second before the mirror came through in pieces. Mom, Dad, and my brother took shelter under sofa cushions in an interior closet, and the eye of the tornado passed directly over them - Mom and Dad have described it that it sounded like a train driving through the house, then silence and no air to breathe, then the train and wind was back.
After it was gone, my dad, a first responder, went out looking for survivors. An elderly neighbor lost her grandbaby - sucked out of an open window.

I was 12 at the time of this storm, living in Northern rural Ohio. My parents were all prepared to have a large barbecue that day and called it off a couple hours or so prior to everyone showing up due to the upcoming weather. I distinctly remember standing outside the front door, seeing the blackest clouds I'd ever witnessed in my life rapidly approach. Shortly after, the tornado sirens went off, and we took shelter in the basement. The noise of the wind, rain, and thunder was utterly terrifying. We lost power a couple minutes into the storm. I remember clinging to my dad and trembling like a leaf, envisioning our house being swept away above our very heads (I was both terrified and fascinated by tornadoes, nicknaming them "T-Words" out of fear and respect hehe). Luckily the house stood firm, although the property sustained quite a bit of tree damage. To this day it stands out as a vivid memory. I can't believe I stumbled upon this video. It was very interesting seeing how it developed and affected other communities. Thank you!

One of my friends was born in Jasper and lived in Carbon Hill until middle school. She said one of the F3s passed very close to her house, and that her parents said it sounded like a loud train. She herself remembers being put in the bathtub and covered with pillows and blankets. Their house lost a chunk of it's roof and quite a bit of siding. Fortunately they were all okay, and she helped pick a new roof and siding that is apparently still on that house 20 years later.

If my memory serves me, this same outbreak dropped a EF3 in the small town of Clark, in Mercer County Pennsylvania. The tornado killed a elderly gentleman and caused extensive damage throughout the small town. I was told this tornado was a “jumper” that it was on the ground for a bit and would lift before dropping again.

This video was awesome. Though I wasn't the weather fanatic I've become the last few years I remember this outbreak mostly because November 11th was the day my second son was born and no we weren't that close to the severe weather I live and a town right on the state line of Wisconsin and Illinois called Beloit. But as he got older there were a couple times where I reminded my son that he was born on a tornado day and when he started Pop Warner football he used to run the ball a lot, and he would do the spin moves where kids would try to tackle them and he would just spin right off of them and I'm not talking about like a half a turn and a joke I'm talking about like he would just spend like almost to the point where I would think you got dizzy but he'd get that ball and as soon as somebody tried to tackle him he would spin. And of course dad and the bleachers is yelling tornado on the ground tornado on the ground it caught on after a couple games but I used to tease that it was because he was born during a tornado outbreak

I live in Southern OH, but go up to Northern OH 2-3 times per year. We were in Sandusky this past June and there was a tornado warning, and I think there was a confirmed tornado in Huron Co. somewhere. I was also in a very close call with an EF2 tornado that hit the extremely small village of South Salem (my hometown, near Chillicothe and about an hour south of Columbus). Obliterated multiple buildings and thankfully by some insane stroke of luck, nobody was injured. Ever since that day I’ve been interested in and terrified of tornadoes. I always keep an eye on the weather even if it’s a marginal risk 😂

Another well done video, bro. I've been curious about a couple of things and there was an instance of it in here. 1) People died from an EF2. How many lives have been lost based on the EF rating, and which rating has taken the most lives? 2) How many instances are there where a location is hit by back-to-back tornadoes on the same day or night? I know it has happened before, like here, but I just wonder how many times it has happened. Can you imagine if that second tornado had hit Greensburg?
